"Used one time, bought a nonrefundable bag listed in excellent condition and may even be mistaken as new it said. Bag came with not 1 but 2 holes and full of candy wrappers!"

Don't get scammed!

"I sent $1000 of brand new organic clothing. Was paid $26. After 2 weeks of waiting for responses, I was informed my items were sold and the rest of the bag was donated. DON'T USE THEM!"

Over used items at like new prices

"I am big into shopping and I live for a good deal. I’m shopping on thredUP and these styles from 5-10 YEARS ago are being sold at current like new prices!!! I bought a GAP skirt from there for $27.99 and when I looked at the tag, it was from SPRING 2008!!!! Not to mention they are trying to sell the FREE gauze bag you get for purchasing free people products in store for $48!!!! I’m sorry but they are shady and have horrible business practices. "

In the long run, it is really expensive.

"I bought $105.00 worth of clothes and returned $69.00 worth since they didn’t fit. When I received my refund, it was for $42.00 only even though I boxed them and paid for shipping to return them. They charge $1.99 per item to restock. Unless you buy clothes that you know you’ll not be returning for any reason, it really isn’t worth it to buy from ThredUP.
I know I’ll never buy from them again.

Stink Stank Stunk. Smelly clothes.

"All the clothing I received from Thredup had a strong FeBreeze type odor. All the clothing I sent to them scent free got returned stinking of the same horrible chemical smell. This smell does not wash out.
A lovely hat I sent in to sell was misshapen for the pictures online, and then was sent back to me crushed and smashed out of shape.
Nice idea to have a www resale 'shop' but the cash out to seller is not much. The care taken to sell the clothing is not very diligent.
Canceled out my account after giving Thredup several chances.

They literally "steal" your clothes if you sell to them

"There are two sides of Thredup: selling to them and buying from them. I never bought anything.
This review about selling to them or give them my clothes to sell. Do not sell to them: they reject the majority of the items you send. But also they give ridiculously low pay-off. Literally, pennies. For example, general items like Banana Republic Pullover Sweater listed price $17.99 and the payoff is $1.80. Their buyers have no clue in pricing the items too: example GAP Leather dress new with tags attached they posted as retail was $55 while everyone knows that even GAP real leather dress will never be retail $55. It was $298. I can go on and on with its poor, unreachable customer service and more.
Also besides selling to this company take a look at their management team. I can guarantee that 99.9% of people who gives them the business (aka selling to them) are women. And yet their management team are just males without any female presence. Shame!
Thredup advertises themselves that they are such a good company. With an office in the Bay area of San Francisco. And who pays for that office (skyrocketed Bay Area real estate) if they do not produce or manufacture anything? Sellers!! By getting pennies for their clothes.
Shame and shame. Do not sell to them. They must rethink their business model.

JUST DON'T

"I have sent in two kits before, didn't have any issues (I always opt for return assurance)--I sent in a kit last month with designer items (Tory Burch wedges and a Missoni sweater dress), STRANGELY these items were rejected, *cough* stolen, and there was suddenly no record of return assurance for this bag. I made the mistake of losing the original kit email that would have stated this, however I expected some sort of resolution when I contacted customer service (as both items were in excellent condition, barely used, I took pictures prior to sending the items off) and instead I just had their terms regurgitated in an email, with no attempt at rectifying anything. This doesn't end there, however, because while mistakes happen and I did lose the email so it could very well have just been a (somewhat costly) annoyance I SAW THE ITEMS ON EBAY. I screenshot these and sent them to their customer service and received no response. While I certainly can't prove they were my exact items, I find it highly unlikely that the same seller on Ebay had the exact same pieces IN THE SAME SIZES and listed them A DAY AFTER MY BAG WAS PROCESSED. I have made several large orders and sold there but NEVER AGAIN. Just donate your stuff or sell it yourself as they won't be held accountable for anything evidently."

A freaking joke

"Do NOT I replete do not sell your clothing and shoes to this company. I sent in a brand new pair of Tory Burch wedges they did not accept due to being “dirty”. I took photos prior to shipping and provided them to customer service. Their resolution “they can get dirty in the bag and they trust their employees”. Not to mention I received and sent my bag on 5/30 and it wasn’t processed til 7/17. So if you wanna sell you’re clothing that takes 3 months or you wanna donate to their staff this place is for you. I bought a Coach completely bogus

"I bought a Coach Rescue box. It was supposed to have 4 Coach bags and 1 Accessory. I received 2 Coach Bags, 2 wallets and a very large very fake Coach bag. It was even obviously fake. Send an email to their Customer service and have heard nothing. Never again. I ordered from them once before ... 50 pieces of size L to XL clothing for $100. Not one item was useable. I donated all. Some were boys sizes and kids sizes. Again no work to answer my email. "

ABSOLUTELY ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE SUPPORT!!!!!

"I have been contact via email the support center for a week, receiving only a canned email reply that they will review my complaint and contact me. I placed an order which was to arrive in four shipments. I still have not received the last shipment, yet have been charged for the entirety of my order. I strongly discourage anyone from using this disreputable company in the future as there is no way to rectify a situation with them. I would say the entire company is completely inept at customer service and obviously does not care about repeat business. "

I regret using Thredup

"I completely regret using Thredup and would never recommend it to anyone. I sent in 5 big boxes of nice designer clothes including leather skirts, blue jean coats and many items with the tag still on them. When they finished processing my boxes they offered me less than 10.99 per box and then they deducted the 10.99 per box for return assurance so I made 0.00. They got all those clothes for free. I have emailed them 3 times and still haven't heard back from anyone. I am so disappointed."

Do not sell your clothes here unless you want to give them away

"I have sold on EBAY with great success. I decided to use thred up because I was in a time crunch. I have quality items that I had bought from Anthopologie, Seraphine maternity and Ingrid and Isabel Maternity. The most I received on a dress I paid $290.00 retail was 4.99. They are now reselling this item for $43.99! This is outrageous. Honestly, I would have donated my items to a woman in need or sold them on Poshmark or ebay. Additionally, I was given a credit not a cash option for my payout. I will NEVER buy anything from thredup! I do not like the way the undercut th seller. They are now listing all of my items as "excellent" condition. I guess excellent means... here is $4.99. Never again."

Won't Accept Return

"I ordered one of their "Goody Boxes" and had to return all the items as they didn't fit and/or were note EVEN CLOSE to the specifications from my style quiz. However, when I packed the box I accidentally left one of the shirts out and realized it the day after I shipped the box. I couldn't see a way to initiate a request for a return so I emailed them (which took forever for a response) and they said "Regrettably, once you pack all of the items you don't wish to keep from your Goody Box and the return is marked as inbound, you're not able to return any other items from the order." i.e. there was apparently NO manual way for them to initiate a return at all? Now I just have to pay for the shirt--too bad so sad we're going to take your money? Litterally--just no resolution at all. I can't possibly be the first person to accidentally leave out an item unintentionally."

They screw the sellers

"Don't sell your clothes here. They give you next to nothing and make way more money on your items. Sell your own items through Poshmark or eBay. Don't do this unless you just want to give clothes away for free."

A rep from ThredUp, thredUP_CS, has responded:

“Thank you for your review. We are truly sorry if you felt like your expectations weren’t properly managed when you explored cleaning out with us. We do our best to accurately let people know what their payouts might look like before they are able to order a clean out kit or label from us. You’re right, most people are just not going to make as much with us as they will with somewhere like Poshmark! Selling on Posh and eBay is awesome if you have the time and space to do that. It’s definitely more work on the seller’s end (photography, listing, sharing your listing, keeping the items in your home until you sell them). thredUP lists, photographs, and stores items, which adds a considerable amount to our operating costs, that means lower payouts (but more convenience) for sellers. If you have any questions about your payout please feel welcome to reach out to support@thredup.com. ”

Not great for professional resellers

"My main problem with ThredUp is the payout schedule. Funds are withheld for 14 days after a sale (because of the 14 day return policy, I think) but that does not necessarily mean the funds are available at that time. On 3 occasions I have had to contact customer service to receive my funds when they were not available after the stated date. Just for reference, I've sent in somewhere between 40 items and their value was about $800 altogether.

As for the payout structure, I am better off donating the items for the tax benefits for anything that sells for less than $40. The payout structure is just pennies on the dollar.

That being said, I have taken them up on the "cash" offer on two or three high end items. That was a great option! It was an Armani Collezoni blazer, Ralph Lauren purple label skirt, and Oscar de la renta skirt. I think I got about $200 for all three pieces. Since I usually purchase clothing at thrift stores and then resell, it doesn't bother me to get slightly less on the immediate cash out price than to wait for consignment. I figure that clothing is such a volatile market that it is better to take the cash immediately than to wait and see if it sells.

Unfortunately, it's a gamble to know what will be accepted and what will be return, or worse, misplaced! And the return guarantee is $11 per box, which isn't too bad if I'm sending lots of items at once.

I do like the "Reclaim" option that lets me get back everything that doesn't sell for a flat shipping rate (it was $5.99 as of 6/11/2019)

I plan on trying other reselling sites from now on. I just can't rely on regular payouts from ThredUp and I don't want to have to contact customer service everytime I make a sell to make sure I get my funds.

From a buying perspective: great store, love it!

“Thank you for your honest review, Judith! We apologize that our payout timeframe has been a bit longer than expected for your consignment items. It's great to know that you have been able to take advantage of our upfront payout option & had success with that. Thank you for both shopping & selling with us, we hope to see you again soon!”
