"I have been a customer since 2005. While I'll admit they are not the first place I think of to shop for electronics, I think I will be changing that personal policy after this latest order.

I searched for a motherboard on NewEgg and then did a price compare on Amazon. NewEgg was charging shipping and Amazon now charges sales tax in Florida. I went to Froogle to see if anyplace else had it cheaper, and I found OverStock.com had it for $5 less. When I went to the site, I was greeted with a pop-up, asking me to sign-up for their email newsletter, and I'd get 10% off my next order. I put in my email address and proceeded to order the motherboard.

I checked my inbox for the coupon code, and I saw an email from them saying "Welcome to the Overstock.com community - 10% off Coupon". There was no code in the email, so I assumed it was automatically added into my order. I clicked "Process Order", but the full price of $74.99 was going to be charged. Since it was the last one in stock, I continued anyway, figuring I would contact customer service in the morning.

Today, I did an online chat with Customer Service Rep Lisa. I gave her the info about my purchase, the item, and all that. While she was looking up my order and the item, I decided to click on one of the links in the fine print of the 10% off email. It said "10% off Coupon code included in this email can only be used once. Total discount limited to $5,000. Excludes items in current site promotions (http://www.overstock.com/69634/static.html). Only applies to Your First Purchase. Purchases of gift cards and products from the “Electronics” and “Health & Beauty“ stores, the “Kitchen & Dining“, “Housewares“ and the “Designer Store“ departments, “Books, Movies, Music & Games”, and “Cars” categories are not included when calculating discount amount Discount will appear on the billing page before submitting the order.".

Lisa came back and said "Oh. Now I understood why the coupon didn't apply on your order." I said, "I just saw that as well." After I said, "alright - well, not really looking for bedding or dresses (I'm a guy!), so I guess my 10% off will expire today," she wrote, " I do understand your concern. Let me double check on this and see what best I can do to help you."

I said it was okay, and that the Overstock price was already better than NewEgg and Amazon. After a couple of minutes, she wrote back saying, "normally coupons do not apply to items within the Electronics, Books, Music, Movies & Games, Auctions, Cars, and Real Estate categories unless specifically stated." (As I figured...) But she continued, "But I see that you have been a wonderful customer with us. Based on that, I have decided to go an extra mile for you."

So, they are applying the 10% discount after all, and my motherboard should be arriving within the week, about $12.50 (more than 15%) cheaper than any other place I looked!

I told her "I may just use that extra to buy some SATA cables from you while I'm here."

Very happy customer!

"I had a bad experience with this site. My order was delayed despite the estimated delivery date. I contacted their customer service and was simply forwarded from one person to another. No one could give me a straight answer as to when to expect my item. I bought this item from them simply because it was $10 cheaper than on listed Amazon. If I only knew this was going to be such a big hassle, I would have never placed this order. I would NOT recommend dealing with Overstock. "

"Of course overstock doesn't participate... Just like they didn't participate in shipping me any of my 8 laptops on 3 orders.. I paid, they ran me in circles for 10 days and cancelled order. Not in stock. Wait. They sent one, but it was the wrong one. No one knew anything and all they did was say they are sorry, but we don't know what happened. My guess is too good of a deal. Worst shopping experience in my 44 years. Cripes in the military I shopped in some nasty places, but this takes the cake. Cripes the one they sent didn't even come from them it came from a pc reseller. No one seems to know where their warehouse is and they after more than a week couldn't contact them still. Plus the issued tracking numbers for all 8 items. Then a support person closed the inquiry ticket for all 8 after they shipped one..the wrong one...I read all the negative reviews before ordering, but said what are the chances they will mess up my order. Little did I know they royally screwed me, stressed me out and now I am tired and depressed since many of them were gifts. Again, too good to be true. I just cant believe they couldnt even get some of the 8 items we ordered. Something fishy is going on over there at Overstock. Overstock is Out of Stock"

"Attemped to return an order but entire order which contains other items was listed as non-returnable even though items webpages has no mention of non-returnability for any of the items. Proceeded to contact customer service on Saturday but webpage with contact selection methods is blank without hours of availability. Will try again Monday but regardless of outcome this may be my last order with Overstock.com. It should not be difficult to return an item or to contact customer service "

"Shopping around for an item, and found it on overstock. Read the description, the color said brown. I placed the order and found out, by chance, that the color was actually white. Exactly want I did not want. I requested, in less than one business day, that my order be cancelled. Its been over a week. After repeated attempts to cancel via phone calls, emails and online chats, nobody was able to cancel the order. In fact nobody from overstock could tell me anything definite for 4 or 5 days, and then it was, "Sorry, your item has shipped." Overstock can take your order and charge your credit in the blink of an eye, but getting your money back is a long, drawn-out and needlessly frustrating process, and after a week they still have my $1,000+. AVOID OVERSTOCK AT ALL COSTS!"

"MILITARY FAMILIES: Don't waste your time with O.com

As a military guy, I totally understand not everything can be shipped to APO addresses. I get it. I've been doing this for a while. The USPS has limits, and we don't need entire households bought online. But a memory foam mattress topper sounds reasonable to me, but none of them have the magic **APO/FPO** "indicator", which the FAQ states must be seen on the product page. Hmm... okay, so what is the logic behind what items get the magic indicator?

I figure of all the things that should be eligible for APO/FPO, certainly a pair of military-issue combat boots, right? So I find a pair of Wellco tan military-spec issue boots... exactly like 5 pair I've owned in the past. What do you know? "Sorry, this item cannot be shipped."

Okay, now I really wonder, what things CAN be shipped? What's the shipper's criteria? I can tell you... it's in black & white on the USPS website. Now that I know what those limitations are (note, I'm not expecting free shipping, only that something the USPS will accept should be eligible), what are Overstock.com's internal limitations? Why would you have internal limitations at all? That's one less item you're selling to a customer (a "valued" military customer). I just don't understand, and clearly the service representative on the chat didn't either.

You have to read the transcript to believe it. These guys don't know anything, are worthless in terms of service, and really don't seem to care... obviously part of the Overstock.com culture. Read on... it'll blow you away.

Stuart: Hi, my name is Stuart. How may I help you?
Visitor: Hi. I'm struggling to figure out what items are eligible to ship to an APO address. Your FAQ page states: Items eligible for shipping to an APO/FPO/DPO address will have the following indicator **APO/FPO** displayed on the product page.

Stuart: Yes, I will help you with the details.
Visitor: I haven't seen that indicator on a single item... not even military boots. So I don't think O.com actually uses that indicator anymore. Instead, I have to add things to a cart, then get rejected to find out.
Stuart: What is the item you are trying to order?
Visitor: I need to order a memory foam mattress topper... I don't care what brand exactly.
Stuart: Sorry, these items cannot be shipped to your address.
Visitor: Why not?
Stuart: Most of these items does not have this indicator.
Visitor: None of your items have that indicator.
Visitor: Can this item be shipped to an APO: http://www.overstock.com/Clothing-Shoes/Mens-Wellco-Hot-Weather-Flame-Resistant-Tan/7490475/product.html?refccid=PEDPSHA2Q6XLUMKDSIN5XLJIDU&searchidx=2
Stuart: Sorry, this item cannot be shipped.
Visitor: You do realize what this item is......?
Visitor: What is the logic behind determining what items are APO eligible and what are not? That is a pair of MILITARY boots........ you don't ship MILITARY boots to the MILITARY?
Stuart: Sorry but due to some restrictions not all items can be shipped to Apo/Fpo address.
Visitor: What are those restrictions? What drives the determination?
Stuart: Most of the times is carrier restrictions or only selected items can be shipped to these destinations.
Stuart: I apologize that I was unable to resolve the issue for you. Please let me know if you have any questions for me.
Visitor: What are the carrier's restrictions (the only carrier to APOs is the USPS, by the way, and they don't restrict shipping boots)? And if these boots are not "selected" items, what makes an item "selected"? I want to understand the policy itself.
Stuart: I understand your point, our site is designed in such a way that items with that indicator can be shipped.
Visitor: I understand not shipping a bed, or a couch... I get that. But a mattress topper that is compressed and packed into a reasonably-sized box, doesn't make sense. And not shipping a pair of Army boots to a military post office is absurd.
Visitor: I know how your site is designed. I want to understand the underlying policy that determines whether an item gets that "indicator".
Visitor: Perhaps O.com simply doesn't make it a priority to make as many items as possible available to military families overseas. That's my perception right now, since you can't explain the reasoning.
Stuart: I'm sorry to tell you that there is nothing much that can be done regarding this issue.
Stuart: The item that has this indicator can be shipped or not, you will have to try a different item or different address.
Visitor: I'll be sure to post this conversation to every rating website I can find. "Sorry, nothing we can do... military families aren't our priority."
Stuart: I understand the way you feel, I will surely take this as a feedback.
Visitor: I certainly won't shop with O.com ever again. Thanks anyway.

"I have ordered a cologne from them before and arrived to me with no problems.

Second time:
Placed order on 1/24/2014
Shipped on 1/27/2014
Delivered on 1/31/2014
It was a wooden desk and it didn't have any visible broken parts. My experience has been good with this company.

"I got an alarmingly good price on a solid wood dining room set, and Overstock.com bent over backwards to help with some minor damage on two legs.

I ordered the "TRIBECCA HOME Silves Warm Cherry Transitional 9-piece Dining Set" and 2 extra chairs. My local "Ashley Furniture", etc. had mostly cheap particle board junk, and still wanted thousands for 8-10 seat dining. Overstock had solid wood sets cheaper than the local stuff.

Despite weighing almost 500lbs (!), shipping was free. They used HomeDirect USA, which bothered to call several times to confirm my shipping date and brought it up the stairs and put it in the livingroom. Delivery took a little under 2 weeks.

As promised, the furniture was made of solid parawood (similar to teak) and looks like it did online -- better, actually. Some of the grey trim I saw turned out to be stainless steel rather than plastic. Nice!
Two table legs were damaged -- one had a dent and another was missing that little plastic nub that sits on the floor.

We emailed OverStock they offered to send two replacements for free. The support rep. was having trouble contacting the warehouse, but sent an update email every day for 4 days as she worked with the warehouse. The emails weren't those generic "We are sorry for the inconvenience" emails -- each one was different. Here's one of their emails:

"Hello Charles,

Good morning!

I hope you are having a great day! I just wanted to send you a quick e-mail that we are still working on this Parts Request for the TRIBECCA HOME Silves Warm Cherry Transitional 9-piece Dining Set for you. We will continue to follow up with you daily. I am looking forward in getting this resolved for you.

**Please note that our warehouse is closed over the weekend so if we cannot get this filled for you today, we will continue to work on this again next week.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Lisa S.
Customer Care
Overstock.com"

The only negative thing I can think of is that the furniture was packed with tons of staples, which were annoying to remove.

Overall I am really surprised that Overstock has a low score here. I guess it's true that people usually only post bad experiences, at least when the retailer doesn't ask for a review after each order.
I'd give them a shot though. I've ordered once or twice from them before and was always really happy with their service.

"I ordered perfume for my wife for Christmas and it turns out it was one that she did not like. Contacted overstock to ask about getting a refund or exchange and was told that because it was a personal item, they cannot issue a refund or exchange. I responded to them asking why a perfume was considered a personal item but did not receive an answer to that question and was told bluntly that as far as they were concerned the issue had been resolved and that they would not issue a refund or accept the perfume in exchange for credit. I will never buy from them again and strongly recommend anyone wanting to buy perfume from them to not do so. "

"I ordered earrings as a gift for someone. Its around Christmas time so I expected the shipping to take awhile (almost a month), not a problem, however there IS a problem with not receiving the correct item.

I could have gone through the hassle of doing a return but having already waited a month, and being that the gift was for a birthday coming up in the next couple days by the time I got it, it would have never made it. So I gave the earrings to the birthday girl. Now what?

When I contacted customer service, they where unwilling to give any sort of concession, return only, despite their screw up.
I will never order from overstock again, this is the attention they pay to their ordering process. Slow and unreliable, with horrible customer service, do yourself a favour, don't shop with overstock.

"Wow, I came to this site after I had already clicked "submit order" on Overstock. I read through the first few reviews and thought, OH NO.... but I just received my order, and I have to say, I had a completely easy, great, fast experience! The placed the order on Wed, received it on Fri (not bad since they estimated 5-10 business days AND free shipping AND 12% discount). And after reading people's reviews of the merchandise being damaged, I carefully inspected all of my stools (bought 2 sets of pairs of stools, so 4 total) and they were all in perfect and new condition. I know it must be awful when your order doesn't go right, and I feel for all of you who are frustrated and annoyed with their customer service, but I think there are many of us who don't bother to write because everything went smoothly from order to delivery."

"Purely unethical. They filter negative reviews!

I purchased a $5,100 couch from Overstock based largely on the glowing reviews. I assumed a couch at this price must be a good quality since there wasn't a single negative review. Since we as consumers are buying these products site-unseen the reviews are a major factor in whether someone does/doesn't buy. You must trust the company you are buying from to be open, honest and ethical in allowing reviews, even negative ones, to be posted. Overstock clearly is none of those things. I have attempted on 5 occasions to leave a review an honest, unemotional, review, each one was rejected. It is far worse to only allow positive reviews than it is to have no reviews at all. That is a COMPLETE misrepresentation of the products you are selling. My review spoke in detail about the quality of the product, from a very informed perspective and was rejected not once but five times. They cited the fact I mentioned the shipping, which was out of their control, but every single positive review on their site currently for the product also mentions shipping but they let those get posted as they are 5 stars. I feel robbed and cheated in this whole process. This is purely unethical and I will go to great lengths to insure all potential Overstock consumers are informed about this practice of filtering out negative reviews. Buyer beware.

Additionally I called to try and cancel the order before receiving the shipment since the date of the shipment kept slipping out. The Overstock representative on the other end of the line convinced me to accept the delivery by telling me, repeatedly, that if I took delivery a manager would call me back and compensate me with a credit I could use on future purchases. They did not. I took delivery based on that promise, which they broke, and I ordered based on reviews that they have manipulated to misrepresent the product.
