Wont honor warranty as they should

"Go to their website and attempt to do a warranty claim. It's very difficult to get to the point where you put in a serial number. If you actually have a serial number it's much more difficult to continue. If you manage to get to the finish line, the instructions have conflicting do & don't that if not followed they will not replace your drive.

They also will not replace your drive if you don't download "Seagate tools" run it & include the error code written down on a note, IN the RMA box or they wont replace it. However you are not supposed to put any "notes" in the box.

Also the Seagate software wont load or install unless a Seagate drive is plugged in, the software also will continuously attempt to read the "unreadable drive & never give you an error code.

THEY use the DOM (DATE OF MANUFACTURER) NOT your RECEIPT for deciding if you're covered under warranty!! So if your drive has a 2yr warranty but been on the shelf for 18mth your warranty is 6mths!!!

If you get past all the bull, & ignore things you can't do, they claim they will back bill you any if their costs if they turn your request down.

If you actually do ship to them with an RMA#, YOU PAY FOR SHIPPING THE DEFECTIVE DRIVE, EVEN IF ITS ONLY 2 MONTHs OLD!!!

In addition if you manage to get them to actually send you a replacement, they only send "refurbished hard drive replacements", EVEN IF YOU JUST PURCHASED 5 WEEKS AGO!!!

I know 2 other people who've had bad drive a 1TB that she had 2 mths but DOM was 8 mths old, Another had 4TB & mine 2TB. All 3 USB external.

DON'T BUY SEAGATE!!!

"I purchased a product that was advertised as on sale. I received a different product that was eerily similar to the one I purchased (just less features). Now, I am getting a refund on just the product. So I am still having to pay the original shipping in addition to the shipping and handling to send it back. I am almost spending money and getting no product. It seems that this company needs to work out some kinks. I would absolutely not recommend not using them for anything. I am very disappointed in this transaction. "

"Purchased a brand new terabyte drive from Seagate, failed after less than two days usage, taking my literally 15 years of data with it. Despite the fact that this line of drives is known to fail, and the fact that they have offered to provide data recovery services for other models in the same line, they told me no such option was available to me, and that I would need to pay a MINIMUM of of $1,000 to resurrect the data from that drive. What does this say to us - the consumers? That the public has not yet cried out enough about failures on this drive, and since they have not been called out on it enough yet, they will not lift a finger to help the consumer.

I have been a loyal seagate customer for something like 15 years now, but I will never purchase a seagate drive ever again. Nor will my company, our foreign parters, or affiliates. I will make sure of it.

"I ordered a hard drive at a seemingly good price and received confirmation e-mail. I received another e-mail from them a few days later, the order was canceled and no reason was mentioned. I spend one hour on the phone asking why they canceled orde and never got a good reason. I don't care any more but hope that they don't charge my credit card. Will never buy from them again."

"This company advertises specials and then doesn't deliver on them, even when you have a confirmed order. They claimed the item was out of stock. They must have a very poor inventory control system or their order system isn't tied in with their inventory control system on a realtime basis. Or maybe they operate with a bait-and-switch strategy. Pretty lame for a company with a stature like Seagate. All they offered as compensation was a 10%-off code.

Don't bother ordering from Seagate's online store. And better yet, just wait for solid state disk to mature a little more instead of buying rotational disk with moving parts.

"I ordered three small portable backup drives from Seagate and, after receiving a confirmation email, I rearranged my schedule so that I could backup my relatives' computers. Four days later (on 27 August Wednesday) I received an email cancelling my order. The reason given was that they had sold more than they had in stock.

Any reputable company would offer to substitute a comparable product for the same price (there was no pricing error) but all Seagate offered was a time-limited 10% discount on products having a greater capacity than I wanted. I thought Seagate was a good company to do business with, but I was wrong.

"Just read all the reviews - enough said about this company with poor customer service.

We all know Seagate is a well-known leading brand that makes hard drives, but when it comes to their customer service, it is at the very bottom.

This company pulled a classic Bait & Switch:

On Saturday, their website had a greater than 50% off sale on a couple of different hard drive models. I ordered three 120 GB portable hard drives, as it was clearly showing in stock. I received confirmation of the order immediately after I ordered; I was impressed with that, but that's where it ended. So that was the "Bait".

Now, the "Switch" comes 3 business days later. They cancel the order (ridiculous that they took that long, just to end up canceling.), all three items, and offer only a 10% discount coupon -- THAT EXPIRES IN ABOUT A WEEK! What a major slap-in-the-face to the customers. The sale was advertised as 50%+ off, and now all the prices are back up to retail and no free shipping, so the 10% is COMPLETELY worthless. Do they think we're that dumb? Obviously the short expiration period is to deceive some customers into rush using it. Even other major resellers sell their hard drives even more than 10% discount -- every day. 10% discount is absolutely a joke and is worse than an apology alone.

In the cancellation email, there was also a reply form to state any problems about the order. I wrote my frustration and wanted to know if that was all they were going to do about it. I received no reply back. Simply ignored.

Obviously they don't care about the customer at all. Who wants to do business with a company that doesn't care? I certainly don't.

It's just completely unacceptable that companies can simply cancel the order as if it never occurred -- when it's their mistake. It's even hard to believe a major company like Seagate, that makes very complicated devices called a hard drive, can't even keep track of their own inventory. It's just poor customer service that they can just cancel and run away instead of honoring a comparable item or backorder; don't tell me they can't make more of their own products! Obviously they didn't feel like selling anymore, so they cancel many orders just because "they can".

If you go to an actual Brick & Mortar (physical) store and the item is sold out, obviously it's not the company's fault. But in cases of online orders, when the company states that the item is in stock, the credit card is processed, and they send you a confirmation - it is a basically a contract. If companies can just simply back out on a transaction, the buyer should have the same right of backing out on a payment because they simply "ran out of money" all of a sudden because they weren't keeping track. Obviously that excuse isn't going to fly for the customer, right? So why should companies get away with these "sorry, we have a lousy inventory tracking system and ran out of stock"? They need to take more responsibility.

It's 2008... the automated apology emails are seriously getting old. Anyone can generate that text, but they don't necessarily mean it. Like people say, less talk and more action, please. How nice to think that out of all this, Seagate got many customer's personal information, and we got nothing out of it but time wasted and a slap-in-the-face coupon. This incident has given me a very negative image of this company. Although I currently own Seagate/Maxtor drives, I will definitely be going with Western Digital from now on.

Update: So the email support finally answered back (took them long enough) and it was a generic reply to just contact their 1800 and ask to speak with a supervisor if I wanted to take this matter further. Ridiculous. The supervisors should be contacting *us* one by one and apologizing about this incident and sending us the products that we ordered.

And I can't believe what happened next... on 9/3/08, I, and many other customers, received a follow-up of canceled order "offer". If it wasn't bad enough to cancel the orders, since they have our personal information now, they can keep spamming us with "offers". The follow-up was actually a second attempt to pull a "Switch" on the original orders. They offered us their supposedly new model, a Maxtor BlackArmor 160 GB, for $80 when originally, the hard drives that we ordered were $30. Again, they try to rush the customers into falling into that deal with a short expiration date.

Seriously, this is quite a low, fraudulent little scheme that Seagate is trying to pull. I am truly shocked. No wonder they purposely didn't keep proper tracking of their inventory, so they could send us these worse "offers".

If this isn't Bait & Switch, I don't know what is?

"Purchased an item from Seagate's website, which was canceled without notice. (I guess I'm expected to "know" somehow my order was canceled). Ordered item when it was listed as "in stock." In the future, I will avoid Seagate.com. What a mess (and inconvenience).

Update: I just received cancellation notice stating "due to high demand" they are cancelling my order. It's been almost 2 weeks and I am just now receiving a notice stating my order has been canceled due to "high demand?" Seagate can't make more of their own product? I need to check my bank statement. What an inconvenience and waste of time. Frustrated.

"I placed two orders for two difference products last Saturday. One order was canceled six days later due to high demand and the other was canceled without notice. What is especially annoying is that they don't process orders based on ordering time and many who placed order later than me got orders filled. :("

"In the same boat as many other purchasers of Seagate GoDrive 120GB USB 2.0 My confirmed order of one drive was canceled due to "high demand for this product". Heck, I couldn't believe that a high tech company such as Seagate could not manage effectively their real-time online inventory !!! Will not waste my time with this lame business."
