CAVEAT EMPTOR (Locked Phones)

"DO NOT BUY USED NETWORK LOCKED PHONES

I just learned my lesson the hard way (how I learn most of my life lessons). I bought a used iPhone 12 Mini from Gazelle. It was advertised as "AT&T Network" and I assumed that this meant that it was locked to the network, but could be unlocked by the new owner. It wasn't a problem for over a year, because the phone was being used with an AT&T MVNO (Redpocket). Everything great.
Now, I decided to try a T-Mobile MVNO, and discovered that I am not able to unlock the phone through AT&T. Apparently, the original owner purchased the phone on a finance contract and then sold it off without paying it. AT&T will NOT tell me how much is owed. Additionally, AT&T's official policy is that they can deny service to (blacklist) anyone who is using a locked phone on a different account than the original owner.

So as always, "caveat emptor"... and don't try to save a few bucks by buying a network locked phone from Gazelle.

To improve, Gazelle should screen phones and only offer phones that are paid off.

Otherwise, Gazelle is great. They offer a variety of devices at different price points, and the grading system seems to be accurate. I have purchased several phones from them and condition was accurate.

Terrible customer support

"Terrible customer service they used to be pretty good I have bought phones from them for years. But in the last year or so their customer service is almost non existent. Wait times are at about a hour if you dont get disconnected. If you have a issue with a phone or Order your pretty much on your own."

Zero Stars if I Could

"Just an awful company. I accepted an offer for them to buy my phone, sent it to them, and then they said I sent them an iPhone 4 and made a new offer of $1. Where does one even get an iPhone 4 in 2023? I rejected their new $1 offer and told them to send me the phone that I sent. They sent me an iPhone 4. I have tried to call them to tell them that this is not the phone I sent them and that I want mine back, but I waited 54 minutes on hold without being able to talk to anyone about it before giving up. I have emailed and am waiting to hear something back. Nothing but frustration and headache, on top of the fact that they've effectively stolen my 9-month old phone and left me with nothing for it. Please, please, please don't send them anything of value."

Sold a phone with a debt

"I bought iPhone 11 in May 2022. I was very happy with it until I found the phone was not paid off by the previous owner. I planed to visit my home country in Nov 2022 and wanted to buy a SIM card to use my phone in that country. For this, the phone needed to be unlocked. (Mine was sold locked.) When I contacted ATT to unlock the phone, they advised that it could not be unlocked because the phone still had the installment plan that was not paid off. They even gave me the phone number (of the previous owner?) with which the current IMEI was associated with. I contacted Gazelle Customer Service and asked if it was possible for them to sell phones that still had a balance attached. First, the response was "We have 30-point inspection, so it should not be happening." Then, my inquiry was forwarded to another department. I received a response "If the phone was sold "locked", you cannot unlock it." I asked again "Do you sell phones that are not paid off?" The response was "You have 30-days to return your phone if you're not satisfied."
So, it didn't go anywhere. If the phone was sold as not unlocked, and customers were not supposed to be able to change this status per their sales terms and conditions, that's fine with me. But I do have a problem if the company sells phones that are not paid off.
