"We found the product via google product search. And it was the lowest priced. The product was shipped immediately and item arrived promptly. There were no up-selling pressure when called to confirm order. Well, found out that no confirmation was required. But in past, have dealt with stores who advertise 20% cheaper and when you place order, you have to call-in to confirm, and they try to sell you "value" packages to bring the prices to market level. Or simply say the product went out of stock. Unlike those, 42nd Street Photo was a very pleasant experience. Very glad with the transaction."

"Ordered a Canon lens from 42nd street photo due to lower cost (18-200mm lens) – cost $535. A few days later, a salesman (Mark, ext 5007), called to sell me a different lens from Sigma (18-200mm DC lens). He told me that it was a new lens that only 42nd Street and one other vendor had access to this product. He explained how this lens isn’t out yet and why it is better (OS over IS, etc.). I asked what the cost was, he said an extra $15 to get to $550 and it retails for $599. When I asked for a product number he said “I can’t send you that because not even Sigma has this on their website yet”. I fell for the bait and switch and I agreed to the purchase and asked for the following:
- Updated invoice with product number (never received)
- An email with the product number and description (never received)
- Guarantee that I could return it.
When I did not receive the updated invoice or product description, I called back and talked to Mark. He took my number and said he’d call me back (never did) regarding a product number. I looked at the invoice online and the product was changed from my Canon lens to a “Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS (Optical Stabilizer) -Canon- (72mm)”. I asked Mark if this was the lens and was told “the packaging department has to put that model in because the new one isn’t in our system yet.” Upon research, I found this lens to retail at $540 and most places sell around $370.
When I received the sigma lens, it became apparent that it was the lens I suspected (the one mentioned above). I called Sigma to confirm and asked if this was a new lens and they indicated the lens has been around since June 2007. They also confirmed that they do not do a “new release” with 42nd Street Photo and any new release would be placed on the Sigma website before release. I have documented my story via email with the manufacturer.
Now, on the 42nd Street website, there is a “new release” lens (for $899). But, Sigma indicated they have not released a new lens. And, this “new release” sigma lens has the exact same product description as the one selling for $359 on their website (down to the dimensions and weight). Something is not adding up here.
I returned the lens and per the 42nd St. return policy had to pay a restocking fee.
In the end, I feel it was a bait and switch. Mark was neither truthful regarding the new product nor responsive to any of my inquiries. I do not know if he represents the business procedure of the firm or not, but I would recommend to spend the extra bucks and use a different vendor.
