Affordable Travel Medical Insurance

Limited customer service support

"I can't comment on insurance payment/claims because I fortunately haven't needed to use my policy. There was a mix up with the dates when I started a new policy with my husband and I had to wait over 24 hours for an email response. Customer service on the phone was not helpful at all. She just kept telling me I had to wait for the email to be responded to. What's the point of having a customer service phone number if they can't assist? Really makes me glad I haven't needed to deal with them for a claim..."

Good but could have been better

"I have purchased HCC cover previously and was aware of the general coverage, however, as we all know insurance changes frequently and one needs to be cautious when reviewing the actual coverage offered. Finding the actual coverage detail and as importantly the exclusions wwas not as easy is it could be. The language used across the industrcy is not standard so comparing providers is difficult. Also when purchased finding a copy of the actual policy was also too difficult. Please streamline all of this and provide a written document which is not just legalese."

Improved to doesn't work

"In the past, one could simply FAX an app., and it was all a done deal for the agent and the Insured.
Now, one must go online; I did so, and there was a problem, which did not get resolved until next day (this was for a Short Term policy; client WITHOUT coverage), so lost a day of coverage. System kicked back the $1,394.00 to the credit card. Started over. What a mess.

Great coverage for less dinero!

"This is one of the best short-term health insurance policies on the market at present. It doesn't qualify under Obamacare for one reason only: pre-existing conditions are excluded. But if you are in good health and want to protect yourself against the unexpected, then this is a great way to go, especially if you are between jobs and don't have the money to purchase a policy in the Obamacare marketplace."

Do Not Use

"They are a fine company as long as all you want is to dispose of your money and receive nothing in return. This company will do anything they can to not have to pay anything. They require forms for each and every visit, cent, and communication between you and any healthcare provider otherwise you'll be denied. They will never communicate anything with you, unless you call and ask them first; however each and every phone call will be as if they'd never heard of you before. When you do finally make a claim and call, and finally fill out every form they need, send the claimant's entire medical history via email, and then by mail when they lost the email, they will send the doctor or hospital incorrect information so as to delay having to pay until eventually it's been too long and they can simply deny. They will also arbitrarily deny claims under the "pre-existing condition" clause, whether it's a "pre-existing condition" or not. For example, my 1 and 3 year old boys went the doctor because they got the seasonal bug, and the visit was denied because they were pre-existing conditions. Apparently my 1 and 3 year olds could have been cured of the seasonal bug within two years before, so the claims were denied.

DO WHAT YOU CAN TO AVOID EVER USING THIS COMPANY.

Update: They called with now two days or so after leaving this negative review, giving me the opportunity to ask a few questions, and thus confirm all my complaints. I asked about my then 3 year old son and the seasonal cold that he had. They cited the doctors notes that the cold appeared to have been in my son for about 10 days, which put the start of the cold a few days prior to the start of coverage. Using this they denied any claim related to that visit because this qualifies as a pre-existing condition; that's correct, my three year old son coughed the week before the appointment and therefore had a pre-existing condition and were able to get out of paying a single dime.
On another topic, I ended up taking my wife to the emergency room, after speaking with a nurse who worked for her doctor, and after the diagnosis which didn't require a hospital stay, but allowed for resolving the issue with taking a prescription at home, we ended up with a grand total of about $7,900 in debt. Almost all of the individual charges were covered on the explanation of benefits provided my HCC, supposedly leaving us with basically $5,300 to pay out of pocket. After an exchange with the hospital, I found out that HCC discounted $1,300 because of some imagined "discount" that the hospital denied existed. In other words, HCC made us a corporate discount, or something like that, so as not to have to pay any thing more than the $1300 that they did pay. In the end the hospital offered a pay-in-cash discount that was far better than what HCC offered. I should note additionally, that the total amount of money that HCC paid for me, my wife, and two sons over six months of coverage was that $1,300 from the ER visit, except that the sum total of my membership dues to them, equal just over $1,100.

To anyone considering using this company, consider if you want to pay at least $1,100, if not more if you get better coverage than I got, to only get $200 out of their pockets. Personally, my hospital bills and doctor visits would have been cheaper out of pocket and working with the billing departments of each of the doctors and hospitals.

Again, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY>
