But my first computer died almost exactly a year after I bought it and my this one has an intermittent glitch that causes it to freeze about once per week. It arrived on time and well packed, with free shipping. One weird thing about the ordering was that I never received any emails confirming the order or when it shipped. But I contacted sales support, and they sent me a tracking number promptly.
It's a pretty quiet PC, but of course it isn't completely silent. You can hear the fan faintly when sitting next to it. It's not all that different than the Dell PC that I have at work, but it's *far* quieter than the home PC that I replaced it with (another Athlon from 2000).
At first, it wasn't as quiet as I expected. Then I enabled the "Q-Fan" and "Cool and Quiet" features. I'm not sure how much the latter helped. But enabling the Q-Fan control made a huge difference. It slowed the chasis fan to about half speed, making it far quieter. This only brought the MB temperature up by a couple of degrees, so it is worth doing.
The Seagate 7200.9 is a bit louder than I expected. When you really push it with lots of reads and writes, it's quite noticable. But it's quiet most of the time. My last PC had a Seagate 7200.7 120GB, and it was much quieter. I think the difference is due to a single platter vs. multiple platter configuration -- I've heard that going above 160GB means multiple platters, and more noise.
The Nexus case is good. However, although it has sound proofing on the sides and drive bays, it does not have sound proofing for the floppy drive bays or below. The "below" part is probably where you need it the *most*, because that's where the hard drive is placed -- there's no sound proofing between you and the hard drive.
It runs fairly cool, with CPU at 38C idle and 54C busy; MB at 31C without Q-Fan, 33C with Q-Fan control enabled.
I am happy with the purchase, because it is quiet enough for me, yet powerful at the same time. If I would have bought a comparable PC from Dell or Alienware, I would have spent several hundred dollars more and not gotten quite what I wanted."
