MakeSpace = Criminal Organization

"After our atrocious experience, I would liken MakeSpace to a criminal organization.
My girlfriend and I were taking the first big steps toward a life together - investing in long-term furniture and moving into an apartment together - and MakeSpace was there to undo each step we took, ruin our property and our sense of security, and seriously endanger the fabric of our relationship.
* Upon moving into our apartment, we were informed of a multi-month waiting time to have her property dropped off to us - This means she didn’t have brushes, dishes, and of course any of our furniture; So for the first few months of living in our apartment we had to waste tons of money on household items we already owned as well as sleep on an old mattress and have poor options for sitting (i.e. WORKING in the COVID world!); Basically, MakeSpace held all of our belongings hostage
* Once our property arrived at last, the bed frame we made a big investment in to be our marital and long-term bed was smashed into about sixteen pieces and wrapped in taped up blankets. My girlfriend shed quite a few tears, I spent a great deal of time getting disposing of hundreds of pounds of smashed wood and tape and blankets, and we continued sleeping on our mattress; Eventually, MakeSpace offered a few hundred dollars in damages; We were at this point thousands of dollars down in property and expenses due to MakeSpace’s absolute f*ckups, including the dollars we had paid to them of course!!!!
* Finally, upon sorting through our things from MakeSpace, we realized they had lost a set of screws and such. While small in size, I don’t have to explain that this also made our large investment dining table useless…
As I consider it now, we paid money to this cruel organization to essentially steal and destroy thousands of dollars of property from us. I will feel less safe next time a moving process approaches and feel generally helpless in what I thought was a judicious business environment in the US. No. Organized Crime is Alive and Well.
My girlfriend and I are making our way out of a rough patch and feeling better

The most traumatic experience ever

"! Guys, I received my boxes yesterday and most of my expensive items were stolen! I cried all night (not even exaggerating). It's a lifetime of savings in items stolen. I filled a claim with the stuff I can remember but Im sure there is more. I need help to get my items back. I trusted with my most valuable items and someone had the time to pick and chose the best of my wardrobe! Im sad and angry. I truly need HELP!."

Worst Storage Facility on the Planet; STAY AWAY, DO NOT USE!!!!

"I have stored most of my furniture and most valued possessions at Makespace for the past few years. And they were the best....for the first 2 anyway. Then things started to go downhill rapidly when Makespace received major funding to take their business national. That was the beginning of the end.

At first it was just annoying, sloppy mistakes. Incorrect bills piled up, with the wrong rates and duplicate billing. They put so many incorrect and duplicate charges through to my debit card that I had to set up a dedicated credit card for paying Makespace only. I would transfer enough money to the card to cover the monthly rent right before it was due. That’s because Makespace will not accept any other form of payment other than a credit card number. No PayPal, Venmo, Applepay, etc. They won’t even take cash. You must give them your card number. And once you do you need to scrutinize every bill and charge with the mindset of a forensic accountant. I had to cancel 3 debit cards because of the overpayments and duplicate charges Makespace repeated made to them. Then I got smarter and set up the dedicated card for them.

But that’s only the beginning. The sloppiness continues. Makespace works on an on-demand basis, which is fantastic. Unless everything is constantly entered wrong. Makespace’s system is to photograph each item they receive to store when they pick it up, The items are tagged with inventory numbers and the photos are posted on your account page. When you want an item you just check it the box and they deliver it. Simple, easy and convenient, right? Unless they photograph the boxes upside down, without the descriptive label showing, so you have no way of knowing what’s in the box. So when you go to retrieve it there’s a bunch of unidentifiable items and you have no idea which to check.

So you ask them to rephotograph the boxes with the labels showing. Sounds easy enough. Though 2 years later I’m still asking them to rephotograph the same boxes. Over and over again. They ask me to go on the site and give them a list of the inventory numbers for the unidentifiable boxes, swearing they’ll fix it as soon as they get the list. But they don’t. They ask you for the inventory numbers repeatedly and then do nothing. So you lose it and demand to speak to a manager. But that will never happen because as their inept and useless Customer Service Reps will endlessly chirp to you “Makespace’s management is not customer facing.” This translates to you can never reach or talk to any member of MakeSpace’s management or executive team, from the CEO on down. In fact you can’t even talk to the Customer Services Reps. You only can call any of Makespace’s numbers (including the one listed for their corporate headquarters in NYC) and leave to have a Customer Service rep call you sometime over the next 48 hours. God forbid you miss their call. Then you have to start the process all over again. And when you’re unlucky enough to get through to one of these Customer Service Reps all they’ll do is tell you they’ll speak to their Manager and get back to you, which they only do by email, where they promise to fix whatever is wrong, but rarely do. They also don’t believe in making phone calls.

All that’s bad enough. But now we get to the serious part of the story, where Makespace lost and destroyed the two most valuable, cherished and irreplaceable items I own; a chair and coffee table that belonged to my mother. The chair was a big yellow armchair, a beautiful French antique, that my mother had perfectly restored and custom reupholstered. It was her and the family’s most treasured possession, and mine. She promised it me all my life and sadly the chair finally became mine when my mother died of CoVid earlier this year.

I treasured that chair above everything else I owned because I of the love it represented. I took comfort remembering how the two of us would cuddle together in it when I was young. Three years ago I moved in with a roommate and stored the chair at Makespace because there was no room for it in my bedroom at the time. I recently moved to my own apartment and sent for my beloved chair. The day the chair was supposed to be delivered with some other items I got a last minute email from Makespace saying the chair was missing but they were sure it would be found. Given how many items Makespace had lost and found prior to this I had a very bad feeling. Once again I uselessly tried to reach a manager or Makespace executive to discuss my concerns. Total waste of time. There was no way to break through their Customer Service wall.

I finally got a call from a woman who identified herself as a Customer Service Team Lead, which isn’t much of an upgrade. She said she understood and could relate to my stress and assured me my chair would be found. She swore that she’d call me with an update every day at noon. But of course she never did. Until today - when she called me to say she had some bad news because they’d found photos of the chair, which had been badly damaged and disposed of some time ago. I totally lost it! It was like losing my mother all over again. The chair is irreplaceable to me because it’s the history and love it represents. I don’t want another chair. It would be meaningless. MakeSpace’s sole offer was that they would send me a claim form although I told them repeatedly no amount of money would make this up. By the way, did I mention they also delivered the antique glass topped table that went with the chair. I opened the carton it was packed in to find it smashed into hundreds of pieces and totally destroyed. So the only two pieces of furniture that remained from my family home are both gone and destroyed by Makespace, whose sole response was to offer to send me a claim form.

The worst part of this story is that Makespace knew they’d damaged the chair. They took pictures of the damaged chair and kept them on file, BUT THEY NEVER TOLD ME!!! Maybe they were hoping I’d never ask for it and find out it was damaged. Even worse, they “disposed” of the chair without ever informing me they were doing so, so I couldn’t even try to have the chair repaired, restored or copied. They just sat on it (literally) and hid the loss until I asked for the chair to be returned to me this week. It does not get lower than this, except when I demanded to speak to one of their executives about the situation and was told yet again “that will never happen”. I just spent the last couple of hours on line trying to find a phone number for MakeSpace’s corporate headquarters. I can Google with the best of them. But every phone number out there for Makespace leads back to the same Customer Service line. I messaged their CEO through LinkedIn but of course he didn’t respond.

Makespace received a $55 Mil round of funding last year to expand their business nationally. What idiots would invest that much money in a company that’s so badly run they won’t even speak to their customers, even when they do something terrible. Shady is the only word for a company that hides its management. You can’t run a business if you won’t communicate with your customer base. That’s self evident because Makespace would not be such a badly run and operated mess if their management did speak to their customers. Then they could identify the problems, fix and improve their business.

I hope their investors are taking note and will think very hard before ponying up another round. I hear there’s a bridge in Brooklyn that’s a better buy. A company this poorly run will never succeed. My first recommendation is that you fire the co-CEO’s who clearly have no appreciation of or accountability to their customers. That should have been your first warning sign. I would also suggest that all the various regulatory agencies that oversee storage facilities bare down on Makespace to determine what they’re hiding. Because why else would their management be completely walled off from reach by any of their customers or anyone else for that matter. They’re a storage facility, not the CIA. Though maybe the CIA or at least the FBI should be looking into them. Why all the lack of transparency. Most companies at least have a press contact or investor relations department listed.

At least I hope my horrific experience with Makespace serves as a warning to take your business elsewhere. As anyone who’s ever had a bad storage experience will tell you it’s really hard to find decent reputable storage companies. But at least you can avoid trusting your belongings to the worst of the worst, a crown currently held by Makespace Storage. Run from them!

Three Damages Items. Total Ripoff.

"When MakeSpace delivered my dresser, it fell apart as they unwrapped it. The back fell off and one of the drawers was smashed in. My shelving unit was also broken in half. I assume when they were picking it up, they lifted it and the screws snapped. Instead of telling me (or my roommate who oversaw the pickup), they wrapped it all up and had me pay for storage for a damaged, defective item. Lastly, I paid for a mattress cover but they never put that on. They put a thin piece of plastic over it and it obviously ripped, leaving black stains all over the side and bottom. The delivery people clearly do not care and I am so disappointed in how MakeSpace handled it."

THEY CANCELLED MY PICKUP ON THE DAY OF THE APPOINTMENT AND OFFERED NO COMPENSATION.

"THEY CANCELLED MY PICKUP ON THE DAY OF THE APPOINTMENT AND OFFERED NO COMPENSATION.

I was flying out 12 hours after the cancellation at the end of the month when all the alternatives are booked. No compensation was offered. The experience was honestly traumatizing. The reason for cancellation was that there was construction near my apartment. I tried to communicate that there is a space away from the construction site available for parking where all the other moving companies park and that my apartment property manager is offering to direct the moving truck. There was neither legal nor logistical problem with parking the truck but they did not listen and cancelled at 1pm on the 30th of the month. I had to fly out early the next morning. The level of stress they incurred was traumatizing.

Basically the customer service is nice and talks a lot of big talk but does not even make efforts to come through for you.

Severe damage to my property

"After spending over $5,600 on storage costs with them, they delivered 5 items severely damaged. They initially lost one item, found it, but delivered it severely damaged. I will not be able to repair 3 of the items, and the other 2 maybe, but I need to find a carpenter."

Would give zero stars if I could

"We stored items for 3.5 months. Pick-up was fine. However, when they were scheduled to deliver the stored items, one item was completely damaged. They purported to accept the damage claim but it is impossible to get anyone on the phone.

What is really aggravating, though, is that they failed to deliver everything and are now attempting to continue charging us for storing the items that they neglected to deliver.

Customer service response is non-existent. I was on hold for over twenty minutes and then was put through to voicemail. Left a voicemail and sent emails. Still no response.

I’m happy to update if I get any sort of response. At this point, I would NEVER use again.

DON'T DO IT

"These positive reviews are an utter joke. It pains me to have to choose even one star to rate them. This company literally destroyed almost all of my furniture due to their negligence, refused to deliver to my address after THEY left me belongings behind and forced me to drive in a pandemic to correct their mistake, and told me multiple times they closed my account yet continue to charge me. This is in addition to priceless items that were lost or destroyed that truly do not have value. I went with this company because it seemed like the most cost effective way to move and store my things for about a month but it has proven to be just the opposite as I now have to replace almost all my furniture in the middle of a pandemic and received compensation that was a small fraction of what my destroyed items actually cost. Do yourself a favor and stay away."

False advertising--will charge your a higher price after they have your stuff

"Buyer beware--false advertising and scam service-- just go with a higher priced alternative before going with them and being charged a higher price anyway.

I lived in a studio apt., less than 500 sq. ft., no walk-in closet, and I gave over half of my furniture away. Originally, I requested their "walk in closet" sized space. But received a call that what I wanted to store, a bed frame (no mattress), a love seat, a rocking chair, and 20 boxes would require a "Studio" space. I thought it was odd that I would need their "Studio" space to store less than half of a 470 sq. ft. studio worth of stuff, but whatever...

After it was all said and done, I get an email saying they had to move me into a 1BR storage space. I lived in a tiny studio and only stored half of my things! How would all of my stuff fit into a small studio, but storing half my stuff required a 1BR size storage space???

I wrote and complained, and they gave me a canned response full fine print... What it boils down to is that they are false advertising spaces to make their prices more competitive. Then, after they pick up your stuff, they charge you for a larger size. It's a scam--do not use them!

In the future, I'm going to go with Clutter or a better reviewed service that costs more but at least charges what they say they will and does the packing for me. Makespace is not the bargain or service they advertise!

You get what you pay for?

"guess there is a reason why this company is getting a negative review. At first, I thought it was a great company... I guess I was fooled too? I can't wait to get a house with a great storage space area to get me out of this mess. At first, I was told that it's easy. That they would take photos of all my stuff. They omitted the part that if it's my box or bin, they wouldn't take photos of the inside. If I knew, I would've gladly transferred everything to their bins! Why not, it was free! Secondly, I would've taken the time of labeling what's inside because they would just take photos of the top of the bin.. so you literally don't know what's inside still. Lol
Now, my first experience. I call to request my first few bins brought to my home. I sold some vases online and they were at the storage. I requested if I could get it the next day. They said the next available one was the ff week. I couldn't wait that long. So the lady I spoke with said she'll try to squeeze me in on Saturday morning. Or afternoon. I asked her morning is better since I work in the PM. I told her i needed some boxes to be picked up as well. I really emphasized to her the need to have it done on Saturday. I found out later she was able to get that appt. But she wanted me to confirm it. I was already too busy and didn't get that message in time. It was so frustrating. So we basically missed that appt. I called back Monday. I expressed my frustrations since they could've just relayed the message to me that we got the appt. Anyway, they booked another appt. For today. They came, but just to drop off these boxes. They didn't even care to wait to pick up the other boxes. Wow! So I had to call for another appt so they can pick up the rest of the boxes and the ones I do not need. Plus, several of my vases were broken wow! Super disappointing. How are they keeping these boxes? Im so totally scared!

I don't know where to begin with these frustrations anymore! I mean yes, they are definitely cheaper..but I guess you'd have to pay for it somewhere else.. in service and in quality?

Save yourself the headache

"Conclusion: If you value your items, safety, and home, don't store with MakeSpace.

They have lost or broken at least one item every time they have made a delivery to my home. They lost four whole suitcases I was storing and have delivered other people's items to me. They broke all four of my air conditioning units that I stored during the off season. They've even attempted to bully me to take down my honest negative reviews!!

Their delivery guys always make me uncomfortable. At best, they're just rude and incompetent, at worst they are creepy, too familiar, and aggressive. I've had to call and complain about them. What was done about my complaints? Nothing.

Finally, they have damaged every floor and wall in my home from the front door to my bedroom.

Save yourself the headache and go with the competition!

Paid so much every month never got all of things back and valuables DESTROYED!

"I lived in Manhattan and stored with them for a year. I needed a full-service storage company and they claim to be one. I had the worst time trying to get my things and when I did my beautiful six drawer dresser was completely destroyed and I never received my desk back. In fact my desk just went missing for some reason. They never atoned for any of this I could not be more disappointed. Horrible business practice they are robbing people."
