Off to eBay. Time to get a feel for the market for the stuff I wanted to buy. And that’s when I saw what I thought had to be a typo. I found a seller called “Deals All Year” that was offering the EOS 5D Mark IV for an insanely low price. It was actually only a few dollars more than the Mark III. I looked into the company as I thought it had to be a scam. Seems they have a brick and mortar outlet in Pompton Plains, NJ. There it is, right on Google Maps, including the street view. So the place is real. They had all the glass I wanted, too. Time to make my move.
I typed up the list of equipment I wanted and sent it to the “contact us” email link figuring I’d hear back that they were out of stock or some such excuse. I sent the email at about 6 o’clock on a Wednesday night and expected to get a response the next day. Within about five minutes of sending that email, I got a phone call from Steve from Deals all Year who took the time to talk to me about the equipment list. He could, in fact, sell me the stuff at the prices listed. He assured me that the camera was the “U.S” version and available for that price. He explained the process in detail and we closed the deal in a matter of minutes.
For reasons that were not entirely clear to me, the order needed to be done in two transactions. I’m not much of an eBay shopper, but I suspect it had to be done that way because the camera and one of the lenses I bought were listed on eBay and I would imagine eBay would be a bit aggravated if their sellers were competing with them on other websites. But, no matter, the transactions were done and I anxiously awaited my stuff.
Monday afternoon arrived and so did my camera and one of my lenses. Specifically, the stuff I ordered through the eBay interface shipped immediately and I was thrilled with the equipment. It arrived in the original packaging, sealed, brand new and fully functional. I could not be happier with the stuff. I could only hope that the rest of the stuff I ordered, specifically, another lens and a couple of filters, would arrive soon and I would have everything.
As I waited, I got an email from my new friend Steve asking if I would write up something about my experience with Deals All Year. I told him I would be happy to do that and even post it on this website. Of course, I have to be honest, and say I started to get a bit worried about that second package. Seems Steve had mentioned that it takes 3 days to process orders and, in all fairness, it says that right on the company website. So I had no issue waiting for the shipment to go out three business days after I placed the order. But I got no shipping information. I reached out to Steve to check the status and I have to say that he was extremely responsive to my inquiries. However, a week went by and no shipping info.
So finally, twelve days later (which included two weekends), I got my final package. It would have been helpful if I had gotten notification of shipment of this package, including shipping information. To be clear, I got that information about the first package, but not the second. Also, I’m not at all sure why it took so long to send it. I know this company is looking to compete with the big boys (i.e. B&H Photography) in this sandbox. I think they can get there. They just need to step it up just a bit.
So would I buy this equipment again? Absolutely. The equipment is off the charts amazing. Given the price of the camera was roughly a grand less than the gold standard Nikon D850, I am quite confident I made the right choice. Factor in the savings on the glass and, yeah, it became a no brainer.
Would I buy from Deals All Year again? Yeah, I would. The amazing price was off the charts. And the customer service was strong. Steve was with me every step of the way. I never got the impression I was dealing with a “shady” company or a guy who was hiding from me once he got my money. Faster shipping? Yeah, that would be nice. But, given the aggressive pricing, I’m happy to wait a few days to get a device I’ll be using for years. My only real gripe about the experience was the lack of notice on the second shipment. I would think that should be automated by now, but all’s well that ends well. But it sure was nice to have the peace of mind knowing I could get in touch with a company guy without having the hassle of dealing with a call center or a busy signal.
Anybody looking to buy equipment should certainly look to Deals All Year for pricing info. It would be difficult, in my opinion, to get a more aggressive price.
