In Stock does not mean in stock

"Absolutely horrible company. I purchased an item online as a Christmas present that was listed as "In Stock" and should have shipped within 24 hours. Two days later I did an online chat in which I was told delays due to labor shortages. Three days after that, still no shipping confirmation so I do another chat and was then told it is backordered. The chat agent was incredibly rude and clearly did not care."

Cut manga and damaged books

"Usually my experiences at Books a million are fine (hence the two stars rather than one) but today my experience was stressful and disheartening at best. I went in to purchase five volumes of the attack on titan mangas and when I got home I noticed that on two on the volumes they were cut, presumably with a box cutter. Not only was the cover cut but about 1/4 of the pages and the backs were scratched to hell. I hadn't even noticed because someone had deliberately hidden the damages with tape and by cramming the volumes together. I checked the manga before I even bought them and they looked fine until you started trying to read them. Secondly I purchased a hefty hardcover book, not a cheap one by any means and when I cozied up at home to read it, there were stickers places directly on the pages that tore them when I tried to remove them. These stickers were like the ones you see on the backs on their books, like the price tags and they were equally as sticky. When I called in to the store to try to get them replaced on the same day I bought them, I was told I couldn't swap my books out or return them. Probably won't be returning to the store for a while if at all after this experience."

I have been scammed by Books-A-Million

"I wish I would have read all the terrible reviews by this company before ordering a book from them. I ordered a book in good faith that they stated was in stock and would be mailed to me in 3-5 days. This was a book published in 1999. They now say my order is “back ordered” and “product will ship when released”. I requested a full refund after realizing this was an absolute fraud. What amazes me about this company is how you get bombarded with e-mails trying to lure you back for more of their so called “deals”. The Texas AG needs to investigate this company if it already hasn’t. "

Order shipped 6 months after it was placed; company refused to send order to current address after I moved

"I ordered a book to read over the holidays on December 2nd. I recently received an email that it was on its way on JUNE 22nd. I have since moved from that shipping address and won't be receiving the book. Customer service refused a refund because I could not return the book that I did not receive. They said I had to wait 30 days for the books to be returned by the person that is receiving it at my previous address. Most companies would simply send a new book to the proper address. Books-A-Million had the worst return/refund policy and I was blamed for not keeping up with the release date of the book that the publisher had pushed back."

Be honest!

"Disclaimer - this is an order for a new book, not a resold book so I'm not sure if it's appropriate for this website. But it does reflect the service I received from this seller.

I ordered a book in October from Books-A-Million that appeared to be in stock. There was a note on the book's page that said something like "Ready to ship by September 23" (not sure if that was the exact verbiage or date, but you get the gist :)) I placed my order, and their system allowed it. A day later, I got an automated email that said that the book was in pre-order status. Which sounded odd, if it's ready to ship already. I emailed customer service, and they told me it's backordered. So what was the status - in stock, pre-order, or backordered? Because the item (a signed version of a bestselling book) was sold out on almost every other online site I checked, I found this all suspicious. I also saw that a few days after I placed my order, the status of the book on their website became "Unavailable". I emailed customer service at least twice asking directly "Is the book in stock and am I guaranteed a copy since I ordered it before it became unavailable?" All I got was runaround answers like "that pending charge on your credit card should drop off, we only charge when the item ships". Okay, will it ship? No direct answer. Thank goodness I read between the lines and ordered the book from Amazon while I was still waiting for a direct answer from Books-A-Million. I received the book from Amazon in the mail within a week, and is the signed version I wanted. Book chains should be careful, because they are being replaced by giants like Amazon (who I hate by the way - but resorted to using them since Books-A-Million was giving me the runaround). Customer service is what sets stores apart and makes them last. Will not be buying from this store again. All they had to say was "I'm sorry that our system allowed you to purchase an unavailable book. We updated our system to reflect its current status." and then this bad review would not have been necessary.

Shop elsewhere

"Ordered a book with 3-5 business days shipping. Order placed, card charged, email saying it was shipped 1.28.19.....fast forward to 2.10.19 got an email saying 2.14.19 delivery. According to my math that is 14 business days, over 2 weeks for scheduled delivery. Contacted customer service and they “are looking into it” No reason, apology or attempt to make it right......stick with Barnes n Noble "

There is no Customer Service

"I have ordered three Items in November. Received one December 4th and an email that the remaining two are delayed by a week. Fine with me. On December 21, I had no items, no updates. I contacted Customer Service via form provided in the order email. It promised a review by CS rep within 48 hours. It is December 25th. No order, no contact from Customer Service. Never again. My crystal ball says they will go out of business within a year. Cant blame it on Amazon when you are shooting yourself in a foot."

Check eBay First.

"Impression: Books a Million (BAM) uses your book or real time item search for a used book and searches eBay in order to purchase and resell the book to the search user ('re-sale regurgitation'). This has two problems: it is unreliable as the retailer doesn't actually possess the book being sold and it creates an additional middleman for profit while increasing the likelihood of shipping and communication errors. This is the likely source of so many frustrated reviewers attempting to make purchases form BAM for pre-owned merch. It is recommended that when a book or item is found on BAM, check eBay to see if the same item is available first. The eBay sale will be more reliable and cost less money if BAM is just acting as a man in the middle to a purchase."

Inept. False advertising. Spam you but can't sell products. You DO NOT post an ebook!!!!!!!

"Most inept bunch. They cannot sell outside the US. Despite this you can sign up to their spam. They spam me everyday but I cannot even purchase anything. Useless and lazy. I sent at least 15 emails over past free days and no one has responded to any of them. The ineptperson assisting me initially said they need the address to ship ebooks.... Now, really. Are you so dense that you do not know the difference between a physical product and a digital one? Why are they spamming Non-US citizens if they are not legally allowed to sell to us? Why must I waste my time setting up an account if I cannot order? Why must I be prepared to spend $400+ but you cannot even sell to me> Utter waste of time. Inept and lazy staff. Dishonest advertising and spam."

False Advertising

"Ordered a paperback book. Said it would take 2-4 weeks for delivery. The next day, received an email from them saying it was out of stock, and would take an additional 2-4 weeks for them to even get the book! How do you sell something you don’t even have? Ludicrous!"

Major fraud

"Beware of buying ebooks that you are suppose to download! I was never able to download book and customer service was never able to figure out why. They actually wanted me to figure out the problem and let them know how to remedy the situation. That is what your tech support is for! I never received any more contact from them, and now I am out of money and ebook. I will be reporting booksamillion to the better business bureau."

Wrong book, refusing to issue a refund

"I wish I had looked up company reviews before trying to purchase a book through them, but it was a time-sensitive purchase.

I ordered a review book and a week later, I received the wrong book. I ordered a nursing certification book, and they sent me a English book. I was annoyed, but just figured I’d return it for a refund.

I mailed the book back a couple of days later, and received notification on June 26th that the book had been received by the warehouse and that I’d recieved a refund shortly.... 3-5 days, to quote customer service. It is now July 7th, and upon MY following up with this awful company, they claimed that my book hadn’t been received by the warehouse yet!

Terrible, terrible company. I will be calling them today because this entire, futile transaction has gone on for far too long. Do not, under any circumstances, order from this company.
