Flimsy Chinese frames, questionable charity program

"I've purchased more than six pairs of reading glasses from Readers.com over the past 16 months The average lifespan of these is less than one year. While cleaning with lens wipes or a damp, lint-free cloth, the frame simply snaps above or below the lens — which falls out. It's the same every time. Readers recently adopted a 6-month guarantee which is insufficient. My last two batches included frames that snapped in 4 to 5 months of moderate wear. The site is frequently sold out of standard frame shapes and sizes, and various magnifications. Readers does not deny its role as a US front for outsourced Chinese-made glasses, but the glasses country of origin is not identified online.

Readers is owned by One Click Ventures which also owns Sunglass Warehouse and felix+iris which went out of business last December. Online staff photos show virtually no racial diversity. These firms are based at the same address in Indiana.

One Click claims that its companies donate reading glasses and sunglasses "to those in need in Central America" but fails to mention the number of pairs it has provided. However, its Readers site claims instead that it gives $3 to a charity — no eyeglasses. Readers also points out that this promotion is blocked by 7 states, and it only applies when customers buy one of two specific $17.99 models, available only in one size. Meantime, One Click's Sunglasses Warehouse claims that it donates actual sunglasses, but provides no details, or any clue as to how customers can participate. So much for altruism and philanthropic transparency.

Pay Shipping For Purchases and Returns, Moron Ordering & Return System, No Replies to Eamils

"Beware, do not order from Readers.com. I placed an order and had to pay shipping. The glasses were not what I expected so I wanted to return them and posted a review on their website why I didn't like them. The paperwork that arrived with the order gave a link to a web page for returns. It said I did not have an account, I am guessing because I checked out as a guest with Paypal, so wouldn't let me go any further. I then created an account using the same email address that I used for my order and then tried to make a return but it shows I have not placed any orders.

I then used their website contact form to tell readers.com the reasons I wanted to return them as stated in my review, which they never posted, and asked how I was supposed to return when I need to have an account to return them but my account shows I haven't placed any orders. The website form said I would hear back from them in 24 to 48 hours but all I got was a canned generic email reply.

I checked out the FAQ's and found I have to pay to ship them back. So in the end I will pay shipping both ways and have no product. Do yourself a favor and just but your readers from a drugstore where you can try them on and not have to pay shipping.
