"There was nothing in my Father’s estate that I truly wanted. He died in 1979. Certainly his memory is paramount to me, but I had no physical token of his presence. I did acquire his wrist watch, a Longine Flagship wrist watch. Occasionally, I would come across it and remember how every night the last thing he’d do is put it on the bedside table.

When I received it, the watch itself looked sad, like it had spent years in the Gobi desert. It didn't work. The crystal was scratched. The body dulled. It was most unappealing. So what has it been? It took me 34 years to figure out I could fix it, buff it up and return it to its former glory.

One day I’ll place it on my bedside table for the last time, but the watch will be ticking away, moving forward into the future and into the possession of my only child. I don’t know of any other heirloom in my family.
