"belowcostappliances.com is a limited, somewhat misnamed web site for discounted Hunter Ceiling fans, garbage disposals, air cleaners, humidifiers, and related parts and accessories.

The primary reason their Hunter fan inventory is "below cost" is that most of it is reconditioned. They do, however, offer a few fans that are new. Their prices on their new items are very competitive.

What they annoyingly don't say is that the new fans will be drop-shipped by the manufacturer. I learned this only after inquiring about my order status. It is not mentioned on their web site.

The web site itself provides reasonable tools for product searching, and also indicates stock status of each item. There is also a lot of information about ceiling fans on their website.

An email was sent to me to confirm my order that contained no info other than what I ordered, an order number, and how much it cost.

There is no online order status check, but instead, an online form that requires an agent to reply to manually by email. The response I received when I requested my order status was minimal, and contained only this form letter:

"One or more items on the order will be directly shipped from the manufacturer. This process usually takes a couple of weeks and we do not receive tracking information when they ship. If you still have not received this order after two weeks, please contact us so we can get an update from the manufacturer. Please be aware processing and shipping will be carried out only on business days."

I had better luck calling their customer service number and speaking to a real person.

My credit card was charged several days before the item was shipped. Apparently, they don't wait for the drop-shipment notification, and charge immediately. This is a very poor business practice. Also, they do not guarantee their products, but defer to the manufacturer's warrantee.

I received a shipping status email when the item was shipped, but based on the return address, I think that email came from the manufacturer (drop-shipper) and not from belowcostappliances.com.

In summary, I'd say they're a reasonable source for some items that may not be available or may be higher priced elsewhere. However, forget the web site for ordering. Use their customer service number, and settle all potential billing and shipping issues up front.
