Why ask for a phone number if the delivery folks aren't going to call?
“I ordered a sofa for my daughter's new apartment. It was to be shipped via FedEx and they asked for her phone number so they could call ahead to provide a delivery window and make sure she was home to receive it. She was home all day waiting for the phone call, but finally had to leave for work. She found a tag on the exterior door to the building that FedEx could not get in the building to deliver the sofa. She called the number on the tag to set up a new delivery, and the exact same thing happened again and again! After the 2nd delivery attempt, I called to complain that the FedEx folks did not call for my daughter to beep them into the secure building, and FedEx replied that their delivery folks do not carry phones, so they cannot call! The sofa was returned to the main distribution center 30 minutes away. My daughter had to drive to pick up the sofa and lug it up to her apartment alone.
The sofa, however, is great. My daughter assembled it herself and is very pleased with it.”
