"TL;DR: Surfshark does not allow you to cancel their service yourself - you have to contact them via an hours-limited chatbot or a form on their website. The time it takes for them to respond and affect your cancelation is uncertain.

I, like many of you, rely on reviews and recommendations to decide which VPN I should use. Most reviews cover features, not the nuts and bolts of, for instance, how to cancel service. After doing my research, I determined that Surfshark was the best combination of service and cost at the time. However, my experience of the service has been less than smooth: on one of my computers, I have to authenticate twice every time I want to use it and I was unable to find a remedy on their website; it sometimes kicks me off and tells me to reauthenticate again - this is very annoying; some of their servers are apparently recognized as VPNs by streamers like Netflix, which prevents connection to their services via those servers; there is no way to cancel reoccurring billing in the account section - you have to go on limited-availability live chat or fill out an email form. It is this last barrier I am writing about. When an honest company has a good product, modifying your relationship with that company without having to negotiate the matter via limited means or times is the norm. When a company intentionally makes it difficult to cancel, that is a huge red flag, which would have prevented me from trying them in the first place had I known when I signed up. If you value control over what services you use and your autonomy to cancel when you wish, Surfshark actively works against your ability to cancel your account on your own.

In addition, at least three communities on Reddit where a review like this of Surfshark would seem logical heavily moderate anything but glowing remarks making useful criticism both difficult to post and, therefore, to find. I would not do business with this company again."
