"Cigna Dental, as is typical of all insurance providers, is a major rip off. They claim to pay 100% for preventative services, however, if one chooses a doctor who isn't in Cigna's network forget about that claim. Cigna will then only pay what they claim is the maximum amount allowable for one's home city. In my case I live in San Francisco which is one of the most expensive US cities to reside. But Cigna only allows a maximum of $27 for a dental exam and only $62 for a cleaning. Tell me where in the SF Bay Area where one can find an independent dentist who charges these rates?! Thus, the balance I'm stuck with paying because Cigna refuses to do so is $89 which is more than 50% of the total cost! Just for a basic exam & cleaning. I shudder to think how little they will pay out for a basic filling much more a crown. And this is, of course, after I wait between 6-18 months! Rip off. These insurance companies ought to be regulated better, but the government just lets them get away with it citing 'free market enterprise'. I call it bribery (e.g. lobbying)...."
