GREAT COMPANY!

"I see all of these negative reviews and shake my head.... I set up a policy on myself and my spouse a few months ago and had to make some changes. I am LE and went through the First Responder Task Force when they came to my department. I had originally elected the $100k policy as a starting point after reviewing with my wife, we decided to max out both of our coverages $250k/$250k and add our children onto the rider. Once my starting point was created in the department it was easy to get ahold of someone and make that change over the phone! I will let all of my co-workers know how easy the change process is!"

EXCELLENT COVERAGE

"I have been with AFBA for 10 years. I have my kids and grandchildren on the coverage. I am a first responder and have seen the claims pay out within my department. "

Death benefits denied based on another dead person medical information

"I’m an army veteran. Always told family that AFBA was a honest company. My daughter died. No benefits paid. Denial was made on another dead person’s information. Don’t ever do business with this company. They are horrible and have denied her children if any financial security from death benefits. Stay away. "

Horrible Customer Service

"I am a single parent and drowning in debt related to the death of my child’s mother. I reached out to get a hold of them to file a claim, and I can't get a hold of a single person. "

I didn't die. Good thing...

"I received a letter upon approaching my 50th birthday saying I needed to choose a new policy plan. I didn't like the new rates so I found a different policy with USAA. Turns out they still were billing me for the plan they said I no longer qualified for. I called them to let them know their mistake. There was no answer (during the weekday). I was stuck in a customer service call loop. Can't leave a message, can't speak to someone, and was eventually dropped. I did this over a few days before giving up and trying to reach someone in sales or to make a payment. Someone eventually answered in Sales (imagine that). He couldn't help and said that he could transfer me to customer service. I refused and asked that he take my information and have someone call me.

I also reached out on their Facebook and Instagram channels. No reply.

Someone finally called me back. They emailed me termination paperwork but declined to refund my last payment.

I wonder how difficult it is to reach them if someone dies. Hopefully you won't find out.

A scam??

"I am a military wife, which is how I assume they have my contact information. I have never sign up for their services, and in the 11 years my husband was in the armed forced, I never received anything from AFBA. After my husband's contract was up, I received a bill (addressed to me) for $60.00. I tried to call their customer service line with no answer. I emailed disputing the bill and was told to "not worry about it." One month later, I received another bill with an additional $12.00 late fee on it. Again, tried to call to dispute it, and could not get a hold of anyone over the phone. I emailed stating that I didn't have a policy and wanted them to delete any information they had on me and to call me to settle this fee. They replied with "any past due amounts will be dropped when the termination is processed." Super sketchy; what company doesn't demand what is owed to them?"

Do not give banking information!

"AFBA were offering a "free" $5,000 policy. I thought we would purchase additional coverage and I went ahead and gave our banking information as they requested. When the representative left our police dept. the policy options were left blank. I was going to discuss it with my husband and research the company. We decided not to purchase any additional coverage. A month later our checking account is being drafted for two $100,000 policies. I NEVER authorized this!! AFBA is going to refund the money but it will take 2 weeks then a check for the refund will be mailed to us. The cancellation process is difficult b/c it is hard to reach an actual person. My advice is DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY.

Impossible to Cancel!

"My husband signed up for this policy through his police department. I did not need to give any consent to sign up for it. He called twice to cancel the policy - both times they said it was cancelled. When my statements kept coming, he called and they said that I needed to call to cancel my own policy.

When I called, AFBA said they didn't have record of my account. Asked if it was a 5-star policy? I told them I don't know - I called the number on my statement. I called 5-Star and they had no record of my account. I had to threaten to report a complaint with the BBB and accused them of making this difficult to cancel, which is illegal.

Finally, a manager with 5-Star was able to cancel my account (even though it was an AFBA policy - grrr).

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY - THEY ARE A SCAM

Shafted

"So, I canceled my policy a couple weeks ago. This was after I determined that I had more life insurance than I can shake a stick at. I've even recieved a refund on what was due me. Low and behold, I checked my account and noticed a deduction and contacted them. According to Gene, Eugene or just the Messenger as he called himself, my fiancee would have to cancel her policy. So, I was like wait a minute, I purchased the policy, the funds are coming out of my account and you're telling me I can't cancel it. Though he said he would stop the automatic withdrawal, I was a little disgusted by his lack of empathy in the situation. This joker totally blocked me out at times in the conversation. I'm a cop I can sense your lack of interest in our conversation even through the phone line. I can assure you, that the next time your Rep hit our Squadroom, I'll be shaking my head no, no, no to my fellow Cohorts. L.E "

Don't do what they say.

"I bought a life insurance policy for my wife. I chose a policy that didn't require health questions or medical exam. They never asked for it. My wife unfortunately passed away on October 11th, 2017. I notified AFBA that day because I was told when I bought the policy that they would overnight a check for $5000 to help with expenses. I was immediately told that no they won't, they will investigate the matter first. Well, long story short, they dug into her medical history and eventually denied payment on the policy. These people have put me and my family in a bind since now we have to comeup with money to pay off her $12,000 funeral bill and other expenses. Thank you AFBA. See you in court."

This company ****!!

"I signed up for reciprocal policies to cover both me and my wife. I was told my wife did not need to be present to initiate the policy and also that I would be immediately covered as soon as I walked out of the room. I authorized a monthly bank draft for payment of the premiums. Shortly thereafter, I received voicemails from the company stating they needed additional information. When I tried to return the calls I could not get through to speak to a representative. Next, I got a letter inquiring about my blood pressure. The letter written on 12/21 and asked seven questions about my blood pressure and treatment plan. At the bottom, it said if I did not respond by 12/28 my enrollment form would be closed out. Meanwhile, I received a policy for my wife and was charged one half of the premium.

I called to cancel both policies. After speaking to three different people I was told I could not cancel my wife's policy. She was at work and not available to speak to them at the time. They had no problem letting me sign her up without being present. Also, it was my understanding that she could only have a policy because I was enrolled as active L.E.

Since I couldn't get assistance through customer service, I stopped the payments at my bank. I'm now out the premium I paid and an additional 29 dollars for stopping payments. These people tell you one thing when you sign up and something different once they get your money. Do not trust this company!!!!!
