I ordered a Kworld HDTV tuner card from Newegg. I could not get it to work satisfactorily in a fairly plain vanilla XP Pro machine, although others have reported the card works fine. (I am an electrical engineer with 25 years PC experience and have installed five other analog and HDTV tuner cards in the last year with no trouble.)
Newegg provided an online RMA and when I called to explain the situation, the restocking fee was waived. It is clear to me that Newegg deserves its high satisfaction ratings.

I frequently order computer related items on the internet and I have found two or three companies stand out from the rest in terms of product, price and customer service. Geeks.com is one of those three. For example, recently I ordered several items from them but forgot to include one item. I called customer service a couple of hours after I placed the order and they were good enough to add that item to the order so that I could save on shipping. (However, I don't recommend doing this very often, or you will probably drive their customer service crazy.)

I think the order I placed with J&R a couple of days ago was my first purchase from J&R.

After I placed the order, I realized that I hadn't purchased the right size. I sent an e-mail to J&R's customer service and then, to make sure that the order was corrected before it shipped, I called J&R's customer service.

The customer service person was very helpful in cancelling the incorrect order and placing the correct order. And in a matter of a few hours, I also received an e-mail reply to my initial e-mail inquiry.

I have ordered hundreds of items on the web and I've found some customer service almost as good as J&R's, but none better than this experience.

I am now satisfied with Mwave's handling of the DOA netbook which I received.

Since I first posted my dissatisfaction with Mwave's policy on DOA items, I have been contacted by their technical support department and informed that a replacement netbook will be shipped to me promptly. Apparently, the customer service person I first talked to didn't know that Mwave would provide a prompt replacement for a DOA item.

I will be considering Mwave for future computer equipment purchases.

“Thank you for taking the time to post your informative review. First we would like to sincerely apologize for the defective purchase that you received. Unfortunately we do not manufacture the components, and we do rely on the manufacturer to make sure they are properly tested prior to shipping. However technology can be very sensitive, and problems can arise after a product has been thoroughly tested. We realize a defective component can be very frustrating, and we are deeply sorry for any inconvenience.

Unfortunately our national suppliers do have very strict return policies, that we are forced to comply with. However we are here to help in anyway we can, and we will issue a replacement unit as quickly as we can.

We have issued a call tag already to pick up the merchandise. Upon receipt, we will do everything we can to expedite the replacement as quickly as possible. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at service@mwave.com. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

02/25/06 Update

Payment for the two Wintergreen rebates received!

Today I received a check for the amount due me for two Wintergreen rebates, totalling $40. The check is dated 01/31/06 and the envelope is postmarked 02/21/06, so it apparently took almost three weeks to get from the computer to the person mailing the check. (It's a good thing I didn't hold my breath.)

Therefore, I must state that as far as Tiger Direct is concerned, I no longer have a complaint with them regarding these two rebates. I will never purchase any Wintergreen product, but I will now put Tiger Direct back on my list of companies I am willing to do business with.

It took many hours of my time to collect the $40 worth of rebates, but if I have to, I will do it all over again in the future.

It's the principle involved. It has been my experience that almost all manufacturers honor their rebates. That's why a company like Wintergreen sticks out like a sore thumb.

02/13/06 Update

Still no response from TigerDirect or Wintergreen Systems. Wintergreen has rejected or failed to respond to complaints filed with the BBB of Fort Wayne, Indiana and with the Attorney General of Indiana's office. I have a complaint pending with the Attorney General of Kansas, but I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.

Since there are no other ways to pursue a remedy, I have no choice but to admit defeat.

My advice to all potential customers of TigerDirect and Wintergreen Systems is that you DO NOT purchase any items from either of these companies: one which fails to pay its rebates and one which represents a company when it knows that the company fails to pay its rebates.

For myself, I will never again purchase anything supplied by Wintergreen and I will make no further purchases from TigerDirect until they stop selling Wintergreen products or the much less likely possibility that I learn that Wintergreen is honoring its rebates.

02/02/06 Update

In response to a call from TigerDirect customer service about a week ago, I have left several messages but no response.

Also, I have not received any rebate payment in spite of the promise that the "the check is almost in the mail".

I am not holding my breath.

01/25/06 Update

I have received a phone message that the "check (for the rebates) will shortly be in the mail". However, when I tried to confirm the message, my calls were not returned. I will keep an eye out for the check and report here when (if) received.

Original complaint:

I purchased a Wintergreen Systems barebones system from Tiger Direct more than a year ago, on 12/29/04. There were three rebates associated with the system: one from Tiger Direct and two from Wintergreen.

Tiger Direct paid its rebate promptly. After a year, despite several requests to Wintergreen, they have not paid their rebates, which were submitted with the correct information and within the time allotted. A search on the web divulged that many other customers have also not gotten their Wintergreen rebates.

Since Tiger Direct is still selling Wintergreen products, with (promised) Wintergreen rebates, I contacted Tiger Direct and pointed out that Wintergreen was not honoring their rebates. A Tiger Direct representative, a C. White, exchanged several e-mails with me and asked me to provide him/her with copies of the Wintergreen rebates submitted.

I did so and C. White said that he/she would look into it and get back to me in a few days. This was about a month ago. Since then, I have submitted several emails to C. White and gotten no response.

This is shabby treatment by Tiger Direct. As I stated in one of my emails, I don’t believe that Tiger Direct should have to honor rebates promised by their suppliers. But if one of their suppliers continually fails to honor their rebates, then Tiger Direct should stop selling that supplier's products. When a distributor continues to sell products from a supplier who doesn’t honor its rebates, then the distributor becomes complicit in perpetrating fraud on the customer.

Since Tiger Direct clearly doesn’t seem to care that one of their suppliers is not honoring its rebates and fails to respond when a customer complains, I have decided that I will no longer do any business with Tiger Direct. There are many other online sellers of computer equipment who sell products from suppliers who honor their rebates and who do a good job of communicating with customers. These sellers can be found right here on Resellerratings.

In December, 2004, I ordered a Wintergreen bare bones system from Tiger Direct. It had three rebates: one for $100 from Tiger Direct and two for $20 each from Wintergreen. I submitted the rebates within the proper time period with the correct information and UPC codes. Tiger Direct paid its rebate promptly. A year later, Wintergreen has not paid its rebates.

I contacted Wintergreen and asked them why they had not paid the rebates. Their first response was that I had not included the serial numbers from the CDRW drive and motherboard. I sent them a copy of the rebates clearly showing that I had provided the serial numbers. Then they sent me an email stating that the serial numbers were not correct. I checked the drive and motherboard and the serial numbers are correct.

It is clear that Wintergreen does not want to pay the rebates and is using the “incorrect serial numbers” as an excuse not to pay.

Tiger Direct is still selling Wintergreen products. I contacted Tiger Direct reporting that I have not received the rebate payments from Wintergreen and that in light of the many customer complaints about Wintergreen not paying rebates, if Tiger Direct continues to sell Wintergreen products, it is participating in cheating its customers. A week has gone by and Tiger Direct has not responded to my email.

I have told Tiger Direct that I will not purchase any more products from them as long as they continue to sell Wintergreen products. There are many other online sellers of computer products who provide better customer service. Those sellers can be determined right here on this web site.

I have filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau of Fort Wayne, Indiana, (fortwayne.bbb.org), the Attorney General of Indiana (in.gov/attorneygeneral/contact/) and the Attorney General of Kansas (accesskansas.org/ksag/contact.htm).

I believe that no one should purchase any product from Wintergreen Systems and that all should refuse to purchase anything from Tiger Direct until they stop selling Wintergreen Systems products.

07/2006

I received a check for $40 drawn on the Attorney General of Indiana's account. There was not a clear explanation of what the payment was for, but since Wintergreen owed me two $20 rebates, totalling $40, I have to assume that this check represents payment for my rebates.

Of course, the expense represented by the time I spent pursuing these rebates was much more than $40, but it's the principle of the thing and I would do it all over again if I have to.

I don't know any consumer who likes rebates, but as long as manufacturers and retailers are going to offer rebates as an enticement to buy, I will do everything I can to see that they meet their obligation or if they don't, that this behavior will be reported to the proper authorities and other consumers.

Ordered two Ramses 1gb DDR2 memory sticks on 07/21/06. Received them shortly and they worked fine.

Around the first of October, one memory stick failed. The BUYAIB web site said that there was a one year warranty on the memory sticks.

I filled out the online RMA and return the faulty memory stick, Certified Mail, Return Receipt requested. I have received the post card with a signature of a BUYAIB employee confirming that the faulty memory was received by BUYAIB.

It's now a month later and I have received no replacement memory and no communications from BUYAIB. On their web site, the RMA indicates "Waiting For Return Package".

I have sent e-mails to all of the e-mail addresses on their web site with no reply. I have called all of the phone numbers on their web site, let the phone ring at least 20 times and no one answered the phone.

After making these efforts, I contacted my credit card company and put the transaction in dispute. The credit card company has issued a credit to my account for the faulty memory and is waiting for a response from the vendor (Good Luck with that!)

As you can see from the many reports of dissatisfaction, my experience is not unique. It must be that BUYAIB is able to stay in business only by counting on first time orders from unsuspecting customers.
