02/25/06 Update
Payment for the two Wintergreen rebates received!
Today I received a check for the amount due me for two Wintergreen rebates, totalling $40. The check is dated 01/31/06 and the envelope is postmarked 02/21/06, so it apparently took almost three weeks to get from the computer to the person mailing the check. (It's a good thing I didn't hold my breath.)
Therefore, I must state that as far as Tiger Direct is concerned, I no longer have a complaint with them regarding these two rebates. I will never purchase any Wintergreen product, but I will now put Tiger Direct back on my list of companies I am willing to do business with.
It took many hours of my time to collect the $40 worth of rebates, but if I have to, I will do it all over again in the future.
It's the principle involved. It has been my experience that almost all manufacturers honor their rebates. That's why a company like Wintergreen sticks out like a sore thumb.
02/13/06 Update
Still no response from TigerDirect or Wintergreen Systems. Wintergreen has rejected or failed to respond to complaints filed with the BBB of Fort Wayne, Indiana and with the Attorney General of Indiana's office. I have a complaint pending with the Attorney General of Kansas, but I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.
Since there are no other ways to pursue a remedy, I have no choice but to admit defeat.
My advice to all potential customers of TigerDirect and Wintergreen Systems is that you DO NOT purchase any items from either of these companies: one which fails to pay its rebates and one which represents a company when it knows that the company fails to pay its rebates.
For myself, I will never again purchase anything supplied by Wintergreen and I will make no further purchases from TigerDirect until they stop selling Wintergreen products or the much less likely possibility that I learn that Wintergreen is honoring its rebates.
02/02/06 Update
In response to a call from TigerDirect customer service about a week ago, I have left several messages but no response.
Also, I have not received any rebate payment in spite of the promise that the "the check is almost in the mail".
I am not holding my breath.
01/25/06 Update
I have received a phone message that the "check (for the rebates) will shortly be in the mail". However, when I tried to confirm the message, my calls were not returned. I will keep an eye out for the check and report here when (if) received.
Original complaint:
I purchased a Wintergreen Systems barebones system from Tiger Direct more than a year ago, on 12/29/04. There were three rebates associated with the system: one from Tiger Direct and two from Wintergreen.
Tiger Direct paid its rebate promptly. After a year, despite several requests to Wintergreen, they have not paid their rebates, which were submitted with the correct information and within the time allotted. A search on the web divulged that many other customers have also not gotten their Wintergreen rebates.
Since Tiger Direct is still selling Wintergreen products, with (promised) Wintergreen rebates, I contacted Tiger Direct and pointed out that Wintergreen was not honoring their rebates. A Tiger Direct representative, a C. White, exchanged several e-mails with me and asked me to provide him/her with copies of the Wintergreen rebates submitted.
I did so and C. White said that he/she would look into it and get back to me in a few days. This was about a month ago. Since then, I have submitted several emails to C. White and gotten no response.
This is shabby treatment by Tiger Direct. As I stated in one of my emails, I don’t believe that Tiger Direct should have to honor rebates promised by their suppliers. But if one of their suppliers continually fails to honor their rebates, then Tiger Direct should stop selling that supplier's products. When a distributor continues to sell products from a supplier who doesn’t honor its rebates, then the distributor becomes complicit in perpetrating fraud on the customer.
Since Tiger Direct clearly doesn’t seem to care that one of their suppliers is not honoring its rebates and fails to respond when a customer complains, I have decided that I will no longer do any business with Tiger Direct. There are many other online sellers of computer equipment who sell products from suppliers who honor their rebates and who do a good job of communicating with customers. These sellers can be found right here on Resellerratings.
