TigerDirect / S
Rating 2/10 1/5
modified review posted Jun-03-2010

Hi, everyone!

You can check my prior reviews and see that I rarely give low ratings to companies because I'm generally very careful about who I shop with online and don't buy from companies that don't measure up, but if a company deserves a low rating that's just what they'll get.

My computer hardware orders from TigerDirect.com have gone pretty well although the prices weren't all that great, but at least they had the product that I wanted right then in stock. My beef with them is that they are truly prolific when it comes to SPAMMING their customers.

I've been trying for almost a month to unsubscribe from their deals alert newsletters by using the unsubscribe link found within each email, and in some cases I've unsubscribed using the link twice. It says in the newsletter that it can take up to 10 days for the process to be completed but this has been going on for almost a month now and I've unsubscribed over 24 times already.

When the relentless SPAM didn't stop, I contacted their live chat service and asked that my account be deleted and all the SPAM be halted immediately. They said they couldn't delete the account, but they would stop the SPAM, but it didn't stop. I then contacted TigerDirect by email and they replied saying the SPAM would be stopped, but it's still coming almost daily.

I've had it with them over this and don't intend to make any further purchases from TigerDirect unless they plan to pay me to shop there. Please understand that my review is based solely on my own experience with TigerDirect. Hopefully, this isn't happening to any of the rest of you, and if you don't want it to happen, I'd very highly recommend that you NOT subscribe to anything email oriented on their website.

Now I'm off to figure out how to block their SPAM, or to get a new email address if that's what it takes to stop this.

Good bye, TigerDirect!

EDIT (a few hours later): just wanted to say that another SPAM was delivered into my email inbox right after the above was posted and before I could block it!

EDIT (06-06-10): it appears that the SPAM emails might have stopped, although I did receive two more of them after posting this review. I got word that TigerDirect was also trying to reach me by phone, but I didn't want to talk anymore about it after so many attempts to stop it. Enough is enough, so this review won't be updated further unless the SPAM keeps coming, or TigerDirect jumps in here with some lame excuse. The bottom line is that the SPAM should have stopped on the very first attempt to unsubscribe.

“Bob,

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, I tried to contact you via phone but your wife said you were unavailable. We are not sure why your multiple attempts at unsubscribing have not been successful and I have contact our IT department to review why your requests are not being processed.

I requested your email address specifically to be manually removed and you should NOT be receiving any more emails, if you are please contact me directly at ernie@help.tigerdirect.com so I may investigate further into this matter.

It just can't get much better than this... I ordered at about 1:30 PM one afternoon, and my order was delivered the very next day. Pricing, communications, order processing, packaging, and shipping were all were excellent! I have no complaints whatsoever with discountofficeitems.com and will definitely buy from them again.

eBay is a mixed bag of potential goodies and problems in that you never know what you are going to get when you shop there. I've felt very good at times right after buying and have felt somewhat ripped off other times. It's hard for me to tell whether eBay stands behind their sellers, their buyers, or both. Sellers seem to frequently complain that the whole operation is setup in favor of the buyer, while the buyers themselves often complain that it's just the opposite.

All I can suggest is that anyone purchasing items there should read through the various information and tips posted by eBay on their website, check out seller feedback and the length of time that seller has been selling at eBay, then proceed ahead based on all the knowledge that you've gathered.

I've been doing online shopping and purchases at NewEgg.com since they first went into business and because they've been so good to me for so long, I rarely buy computer components any place else.

A few orders back, I received a $360 LCD monitor that had a couple of clusters of dead pixels so I inquired about the issue through their online chat service and was told right away to return the monitor through their RMA service for a replacement. The whole process took only a few days, and they paid shipping on the original purchase, the return shipping for the bad monitor, and the shipping for the replacement monitor. The replacement works perfectly and with no dead pixels, by the way.

I don't know of any online merchant that I can recommend more highly.

Thank you NewEgg!

Fast order processing and shipping; purchased items were exactly as described and pictured; highly recommended seller... thanks, ClickyKeyboards!

* Edited (11/18/08): I've placed and received my second order from ClickyKeyboards and this order went as perfectly as the first. Anyone looking for information and products related to the IBM Model M keyboard should definitely look here.

Thanks again!

Directron.com
Rating 8/10 4/5
modified review posted Oct-31-2008

My keyboard order (first order ever with Directron) was processed quickly and it arrived in good condition in just one day but the keyboard received is NOT the keyboard pictured in the Directron ad:

http://www.directron.com/kl51.html

http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/directron_2024_225571

As can be seen in the photographs of the product (at the time of this post), the keyboard pictured and the one I ordered has a small flat ENTER key. However the keyboard received has the "large L-shaped" ENTER key as is common with some keyboards. Seeing as how I ordered this product specifically for the smaller, flat ENTER key, this keyboard will not work for my needs.

Shipping fees to return the keyboard make an RMA totally impractical, so I'll not purchase from Directron in the future because of their failure to provide accurate photographs of items advertised.

* EDIT (11/05/08): This review is being edited because I've been in contact with Customer Support at Directron, and they tell me that their website was indeed in error and that they don't have the keyboard they had pictured in stock. They've offered to reverse the charges on my credit card, so once this is done I will likely edit again to show a more favorable rating. (Note that Directron has now corrected the keyboard images linked above)

* 2nd EDIT (11/10/08): Just an update to say that Directron has now issued a credit for the amount of the keyboard, plus taxes. They did not credit for shipping charges, so in the end I paid shipping for them to send me the wrong keyboard. While they allowed me to keep the keyboard, I can't use it and it is a keyboard that I'd never have ordered at any price due to the key layout. In the end, this leaves me "Dissatisfied", so I'm done with Directron.

* 3rd EDIT (11/13/08): Just a note to say that Directron has now contacted me saying they are going to refund shipping charges on this order so we will see how that goes and then edit this review accordingly.

* FINAL EDIT (11/18/08): Directron now has issued a credit for the shipping charges which really was the right thing to do since the entire problem was due to their own error. It would have been better if this had been done from the beginning rather than have this matter continue on for 18 days. However, I am very happy that they carried through with what they said they would do, so they've now restored my confidence in their customer service department.

Thank you, Directron! :)

After submitting my order, the product shipped out the very next day. The product was well packaged and arrived exactly as described and shown on the ChiefValue.com website.

Great pricing and shipping rates, and quick order processing and shipment. They kept me updated regarding the order by email every step of way, so it can't get much better than that.

I'll certainly buy from them again!

Das Keyboard
Rating 8/10 4/5
modified review posted Aug-25-2008

It's easy to see and feel that the Das Keyboard is of very high quality as soon as it comes out of the box. It's relatively heavy and seems very sturdy. The glossy black plastic finish looks great with the rest of my computer equipment. However, it has a rather delicate finish and starts to smudge and show fingerprints right away. It also scratches very easily with even the slightest bit of pressure, so take great care when wiping it down.

It uses German-engineered gold-plated mechanical key switches that provide good tactile and audio feedback and you don't have to push very hard on the keys to type, but it's very easy to tell when the key press has fully committed.

All keys, including the F-keys across the top are full-sized and easily accessed. I do understand how the blank keys version of this keyboard (Ultimate version) might be appealing to some, but I'm glad that I've chosen the Professional version for myself. I am a touch typist but do occasionally look at the keyboard for seldom used keys and don't care for the hassle of trying to figure out where certain keys are. Other than the missing lettering and numbering, the two keyboards are identical in construction.

This keyboard is heavy enough that it doesn't slide around at all on the desktop due to heavy typing. It comes with four wide (and thick) rubber pads on the bottom of keyboard that also help to keep it from sliding on the desktop. It also comes with a couple of feet that can be extended to raise the back of the keyboard a bit, but I don't use them.

There are two USB 2.0 ports on the right side of the keyboard for plugging in cameras, flash drives, and other USB devices. No special multimedia or internet hotkeys come with this keyboard.

One odd quirk that I've noticed is that the number lock light stays on after booting into Linux, although the number keys don't work if I should try to use them. I can press the number lock key and the light goes off. Pressing it again makes the light come back on and the numbers work, but I never use them anyway.

This keyboard was designed in Austin Texas but manufactured in Taiwan.

The Das Keyboard is USB powered and no additional drivers are required to use it. The USB power cord is longer than most keyboard cords coming in at around 6.5 feet. The keyboard comes with a 3"x4" polishing cloth and a small two-paragraph insert with brief instructions for plugging it in to the USB port.

So far, I'm thinking this might be my favorite keyboard overall, but seeing as how people like different things in their personal keyboard, each person would have to decide for him/herself if it's really worth the hefty price tag. I think that it might be for me if I can get at least 10 years of good service from it.

This keyboard was ordered late one evening directly from the Das Keyboard Store, and I received it seven days later. Customer service was very courteous and helpful on the phone. Don't expect any order processing or shipping information from the Das Keyboard folks because they don't provide any. You only receive an email from the Yahoo Order Store indicating that the order has been placed. Processing and shipping took longer than expected considering that the Das Keyboard Store itself is only about 100 miles from my place of residence. They did, however, provide very nice professional packaging, and the order was double-boxed.

Super-fast order processing and shipment.

I ordered the Customizer 104 late one evening and received shipping/tracking information from the PcKeyboard.com folks the very next day indicating that my order had shipped. Just two days later, I was typing on this fantastic keyboard!

This was pretty much the perfect deal all the way around, so I'll definitely buy from the again, and do recommend them and their keyboards to others.

Thanks, Unicomp!

* Edit: I've just purchased my 2nd keyboard from Unicomp, and this deal went as smoothly as the first. They processed and shipped my order the very next day, package tracking information was emailed to me, the order packaging was very good, and the keyboards themselves are excellent.

I ordered another Customizer 104 because of the quality that I found in the first one. Computer components made in the USA are becoming difficult to find, but try one of these and you'll immediately see and feel the difference. I do own a few of the older IBM Model M keyboards from the 1980's as well, but the advantage with these is that they come with a black finish, and have a USB connection.

Thanks once again, Unicomp!

Super-fast order processing and shipping!

My order was shipped 3 hours after it was placed, and it was received 3 days later. Great packaging... order received in excellent condition, and as pictured.

Looking forward to next purchase from mwave.com

09/09/08: I've now made my second purchase from mwave.com and the entire deal went as smoothly as the first purchase. I ordered, they quickly processed it, and shipped it out the following day. The product was packaged extremely well, and the item was exactly as described on their website. So far, I couldn't be more pleased with mwave.com and their services.
