I placed an order on Thursday evening (2/25/10) for 2 OCZ 1TB PCI solid state drives and received an email the following day stating that my order had been canceled with no reason given. I emailed back and got a response that asked me to call them. I called and spoke with Lynn who first said that my order had been canceled because it was out of stock. I pointed out that the item had been listed on their website as in stock when I ordered them and still was shown as in stock when I when I was talking to her. She then said that ecost had the right to cancel any order for any reason according to their user agreement. I told her that canceling my order and then substantially raising the price on the item I ordered was unethical and deceptive. I told her that I would consider filing a complaint against them with california consumer affairs and the attorney general's office. Fortunately, I retained PDF copies of their website and the invoices to submit to them.

At the request of my client (and their inside counsel), I placed a second order for the same item "OCZ OCZ Z-Drive p84 1TB PCI-Express SSD" at their newly increased price, but later noticed that ecost's product description listed multiple inconsistent part number for the same product. I contacted ecost several times by email requesting confirmation of the correct description and part number of the item. The did not reply so I advised them that I would refuse the shipment unless they confirmed what they had shipped. It's too bad I did not check here first prior to placing any order with them. This has been a colossal waste of time. I can only hope california consumer affairs and/or the AG's office takes action against this vendor.

Update: I refused the shipment since ecost would not verify what was in the shipment. I disputed their charge with paypal and they responded by supplying the tracking number of the shipment after it was returned to the sender. They then fraudulently informed paypal that they delivered the merchandise to me even though the UPS tracking information shows it as being returned to NEWNAN, GA, US while I am in California.

I ordered an Oppo DV-981HD upscaling DVD player. Though their website predicted it would not ship for 2 weeks, the item shipped the same day I ordered it and I got it the next day using their standard free shipping. The item was doubled boxed and arrived in perfect condition.

I ordered 2 hard drives from them on 1/30/08, but they did not ship them until 2/6/08. I had expected them to arrive before I left for a trip, but they didn't arrive until 2/7/08, after I had left. So, fedex ground left them on my doorstep. I didn't find the package when I got back on 2/10/08 so sent a note to the merchant asking them how to proceed. This is their response:

---

Thank you for contacting us. According to the fedex tracking information, the package was delivered on 2/7. If this package is missing or stolen, your sole recourse is with the carrier or with your homeowner's insurance. Please visit our sales terms,
http://shop.atriniti.com/sales_terms.php for any help in this procedure.

If you have any other questions, feel free to contact us. Have a great
day!

Warm Regards,

---

An excerpt from that link reads:

Shipping Waiver of Liability
Once your order has been passed to the designated carrier, you agree to waive Atriniti of all liability financial or otherwise for any failure of delivery, including but not limited to packages lost or stolen after delivery, misdelivered packages, damage due to weather, and delivery without requiring a signature. You agree that Atriniti is not required to obtain signature at the time of delivery and you irrevocably waive any right of dispute for shipments made to you without a signature requirement. You agree that your sole recourse is with the carrier.

Fortunately for me, the package in question was held by a neighbor who became concerned about it after seeing it for a couple days on my doorstep. But, if it had actually disappeared, I would be out $500 as the merchant disclaims all responsibility and fedex has no apparent liability since the merchant did not purchase shipping insurance and selected the "delivery without signature" option.

I ordered a TV stand from this company and it was delivered a week later by Fedex ground. However, it arrived damaged. I was reassured by email that they would replace any damaged parts so I accepted the shipment. However, after I signed for the shipment, they directed me to call the manufacturer directly. I was unable to reach the manufacturer due to indefinite hold. I did not receive any response to my subsequent emails.

This company generally has good prices though sometimes not the lowest, but they have excellent service which distinguishes them from most web vendors. Over the past year, I had 2 instances that required me to contact their CSR. The first time was for a computer case that was damaged in shipping. They took of that painlessly and picked up the damaged item. The second time was about a problem with a rebate. The rebate processor refused to pay the rebate for unknown reasons so Newegg paid the rebate themselves. That is exceptional and surpassed my expectations.

I ordered a CPU and memory from this company which did not arrive until 21 days after I placed the order on their website. My computer would not boot with the CPU and memory they sent me so I emailed them several times to request help and then finally to request return instructions. I received no response after 2 weeks so I returned the entire shipment to them by UPS. They did not credit my credit card account after they received the returned items so I disputed their charge with my credit card issuer. They immediately called me when they got the chargeback from their bank. To my surprise, they claimed that they had not received the returned shipment at all despite UPS records showing their delivery signature for the return shipment. They then contested the chargeback on the basis that they had not received the merchandise back (despite their signature in UPS records) and also because I had violated their return policy by not obtaining an RMA number from them within 10 days of placing the order. In my situation, requesting an RMA number within 10 days of order placement would have been impossible since I did not receive my order until 21 days after placing the order. Some 4 months later, they now admit to receiving the returned shipment, but now claim that some items were missing. So, this is yet to be resolved.
