"Wow...I've only heard good things about RockAuto through word-of-mouth before, in person and on various car forum websites. I was surprised to see the negativity on RR, and continue to be surprised after receiving my first order.

I bought a 1991 Grand Marquis and I needed an ignition coil for it. From Ford, this is a several-hundred-dollar part, and not much better from retail chains. I was able to find a wholesaler clearance on an off-brand coil for eight dollars at RockAuto. With how low this price was and shipping being flat rate to an extent (can get several parts together before courier's rates go up by weight) I was able to toss a whole bunch of other parts into the order including a cap/rotor/plug wires kit, spark plugs, TFI module, air filter and two power steering hoses. My total price after shipping was still less than the ignition coil alone at retail.

The package shipped by FedEx Ground to Canada as I specified.. RockAuto is set up to take Canadian sales tax and handled the paperwork and money for duties and brokerage in advance so I had no problem at time of delivery. This is not a courier feature - RockAuto goes above and beyond in doing this. A lot of e-tailers do not and it means significant fees at time of delivery for the courier doing it for you.

I received all the parts I ordered, was billed the correct amount, and the parts were packaged well. They shipped the first business day after my order was placed, and some post-sales questions I had regarding the duty and brokerage were addressed quickly and courteously via email.

I really have no other option than to give these guys top ratings.

It is worth noting that I have not had to make use of the RMA/return or core return services since I ordered non-core parts and I ordered the correct parts right off the bat. It seems like most people's complaints surround these processes, so just make sure you're buying the right stuff before you pull the trigger.

I am absolutely coming back when I need more parts, and with a 21-year old car, that's bound to happen sooner or later."

"I thought I'd try RockAuto, went to their website and placed an order for a product. They sent me a sheet thanking me for my order and confirming my payment with delivery to arrive in 6 to 10 business days (I kept a copy of the sheet). After 2 weeks no order so I called. Somehow their system had a glitch in it & the order was never sent. They said there was nothing they could do about it; I would just have to start over. I asked for them to expedite the order and they refused unless I paid extra. I placed a call to Tom Taylor, Co-founder & VP Sales & Marketing. No response. If ever there was a company that personified the consumer warning of caveat emptor, this is it."

"I have been burned twice by RockAuto, butnever again. The first time, they sent me a front license plate bracket that did not fit my bumper contour (no big deal, I trimmed it up until it fit). Then, they sent me a completely incorrect power steering reservoir cap (for "various Chryler models 1996-90", and i own a 2002 RAM pickup). When I asked for a refund, they said that the cost of shipping was more than the part was worth, so they refused to cover it. I am 0 for 2 with RockAuto, and I won't let that become 0 and 3."

"They are cheaper and far more reliable than Auto Parts Warehouse. Auto Parts warehouse says EVERYTHING is in stock and charges you before they ship, even when sneaking in a lower cost item (tough to get a refund for the difference.) I bet this does not get posted! "

"Rock Auto Parts staff come across as professionals until they have your money! Any problems with the order expect a royal run around from well trained staff in customer evasion!
We have had short orders, which they recharge for shipping! Orders wrongly packaged (part inside does not match part number on box), which they disclaim. Even when they do, its up to you to pay shipping again! Keep well away from these crooks! Try to get to talk to the owners Tom & Jim Taylor & you will be told they don't talk to customers! Great customer service, right? "

I got it narrowed down, I ordered the part, the part came in, but when I tried to install it was the incorrect part. I called their customer service and they explained that if the package was not in the original packaging there is nothing they can do...I WAS PISSED OFF!!! I WILL NEVER BE BUYING AGAIN FROM ROCK AUTO!!!"

"I have used Rock Auto successfully many times until the last order. They shipped promptly via FedEx. Although FedEx says they delivered, they did not. As per standard procedure I filed a claim with FedEx. I then got the royal runaround for 2 weeks and have 13 documented phone calls with FedEx. Although it is a FedEx problem I emailed Rock Auto and asked for them to talk to their FedEx rep. Rock Auto called me within a couple of hours, apologized for the problem and offered to immediately ship a replacement or provide a full refund.

I know of no other retailer online or otherwise with this kind of service."
