"I ordered a Surefire P2ZX Fury flashlight on May 7th, and was notified that it had shipped on May 9th. It's now May 22nd and I still have not received my shipment.
Apparently the free "value" shipping is through a system called "FedEx SmartPost", where FedEx picks up the shipment and delivers it to your local post office, and USPS delivers it to your door. This may seem like a cost-effective system on paper, but in reality it would be better described as “a system where nobody takes any actual ownership of delivering your goods to you.”
On Monday the 13th, the shipment showed it was delivered to USPS and out for delivery, then several hours before the mail typically arrives it changed to "undeliverable as addressed, returning to shipper". Over 8 total phone calls to Optics Planet, FedEx, and USPS that evening I confirmed that the address was in fact my correct address, but USPS said when it gets flagged as such they have to return it all the way back to the shipper (rather than allowing me to come pick it up locally) and they have no way to stop the package from going back. Optics Planet said they had to wait till the original item was received by them, then they would retry shipping with UPS. That was 9 days ago - the USPS system shows that the package appears to be stuck in their Orlando sort center (a non-accessible secure facility) for the last 7 days. The status says “processed in”, then “departed”, then “processed in” again, all through the same facility. I went in person to a local USPS office and they couldn’t do anything except give me the number for the sort facility, but the number for the facility just rings as busy and the people at the USPS 1-800 number cannot contact the local office. Neither Optics Planet, FedEx, nor USPS can tell me where on God’s green earth my package is right now.
Let me say that I completely understand that these things sometimes just happen, and I generally do not hold them against a company despite the minor inconvenience; however, I do judge a company by how they respond to these situations and what they do to try to make things right for their customers.
Rather than proactively call USPS or FedEx and make an effort to locate my package, or to ship a replacement out and sort out the missing item one with their shipping company, Optics Planet said they could not start a "lost item" claim until the 23rd, but if they do and they never receive the original back then I will be charged for both items, EVEN THOUGH I NEVER RECEIVED THE FIRST ONE. I was also told that I could not simply cancel the order until they received the item back (which is totally out of my control, since I NEVER RECEIVED IT). Basically, I paid $140 to have something NOT delivered, and my only option is to risk having to pay for it TWICE if the Post Office truly lost it and it never makes it back to Optics Planet (highly likely). That is absolute BS. I paid Optics Planet to have a product delivered to me - if their sub-contractor (USPS, FedEx, or anyone else) fails to do their contracted job (i.e. deliver my purchased goods), then they need to dispute that amongst themselves and do what needs to be done to give me what I paid for. All I can say is thank God this was only a $140 flashlight that I didn't need in the first place and not a $1,000 rifle scope. At this point I’ve invested over 10 hours of MY time trying to do the job that Optics Planet, FedEx, and USPS were paid to do. I bought this thing on an impulse, but I'm so fed up with Optics Planet, USPS, and FedEx refusing to do anything to actually fix the problem that I don't even want the stupid thing anymore and even if I did get it I would probably be pissed off every time I used it.
I had several other much more expensive purchases in mind, but based on this experience I would be hard pressed to trust my money with Optics Planet again.
