"I ordered a Norelco shaver from J&R and it came on time as scheduled. The package arrived in good shape with none of the component parts missing. But I had some questions on the handling charges and called J&R. A customer service rep by the name of Francois helped me to solve my problems promptly in a professional and extremely efficient manner and I am very pleased with his service. "

"J&R Music and Computer World is spectacular. I ordered a Snaus System F228-B1 wall mount for a 60 inch plasma TV. The item was shipped within 2 hours of placing the order. Most important, the selling price at J&R was the best I had seen. Packaging was impeccable, and the shipment was received in a most timely manner. Hats off to J&R. I highly recommend, I most certainly will by again. J&R is obviously a company that strongly emphasizes customer service."

"Several months ago I ordered a 65" HDTV from J&R and decided to return it.

Well, I hate to say but the return turned out quite bad.

Here is the wording in their return policy (the exception mentioned below is for personal health care items, DVDs, CDs and software):

"J&R offers an exclusive 30-day exchange/refund policy on mail order and web purchases, and a 14 day exchange/refund policy on retail store purchases. If you are not satisfied with your purchase, you may return it for exchange or refund (excluding shipping and handling charges) within 30 days, subject to a Return Authorization from J&R (see exceptions above). Keep your purchase, accessories and all packing materials in new condition to avoid any restocking fees. Web and mail order purchases require an RA (Return Authorization) number. For an RA (Return Authorization) number, call Customer Service at (800) 426-6027. Please note that an RA # does not guarantee final disposition and all returns are subject to inspection. All exchanged/ returned merchandise must be in original factory carton, including all packaging materials, inserts and manuals, warranty cards (not filled-out) and all accessories. Please do not tape or write anything on the item or the original manufacturer's carton. In some cases, we may charge you for the replacement of damaged, altered, missing, written-on or taped-on contents or cartons. We reserve the right to refuse any such items."

Sounds pretty good huh? Unfortunately, it's not worth the bytes it’s stored on.

Here is what happened:

Everything was returned in new condition, but they called and said there would be a 10% (around $450) restocking fee. Of course I said I followed the policy and returned everything in a new condition which they did not disagree with. They then stated that it was shipping fees they where charging me for and the actual restocking fee was small (I am actually OK with a small restocking fee.) I stated that the shipping to me was $75 and I was told when I received the RMA that I would be charged $75 for the return shipping. I was OK with this. The conversation in which the $75 return charge was discussed was recorded on their end as they record customer conversations. But in the end, they choose to ignore this and charged me $450 ($220 each way less the $75 I already paid) for shipping and a small restocking fee ($85, I assume). They basically told me they where sorry but would not honor what they had previously explained would be the return shipping charge or honor their written return policy because I returned the item.

So, there you have it.

Don't make the mistake I made; go with someone that will actually honor their return policies and charge you return fees that have already been agreed upon prior to shipping the item back. Rest assured that I will be pursuing all possible avenues to recover the money stolen by J&R based on their deceptive and fraudulent business practices and policies.

“If you read our reviews, you will note that our easy, consumer-friendly 30 Day Return Policy is often cited in positive testimonials by 99.9% of our customers. Unfortunately, this is one of the very rare cases where we respectfully disagree with our customer.



When this customer called us to get a Return Authorization, he was advised that there would potentially be a restocking fee and that he would be responsible for the shipping charges both ways. He agreed to these terms and conditions so we issued the authorization. The restocking fee in this particular instance was used to cover the shipping expenses both ways with a small fraction towards a restocking fee, to cover a small portion of the losses we will incur by selling this item as used.



In very rare cases, if an expensive item (like a TV) that is not defective is returned but cannot be sold as new, we will impose a restocking fee to help defray our expenses. This practice is followed throughout our industry and we don’t believe it is unreasonable is this case or ones like it. Fortunately, as stated above our need to impose a restocking fee is very, very rare. However, in this case we believe it was necessary.

"J&R has always been great and Computer World is OK I'm sure. The product, however, left much to be desired and was very disappointing. It's a Sylvania 7inch mini-tablet. It's unlikey we will ever use it but it's opened and I tried to set it up so it's just too much trouble to send back. "

"These are wonderful binoculars! Comfortable, good wt. Perfect for viewing. I can see great detail with my birdwatching as well as boats and the waterways from my l0th floor condo.
