"BookRenter is not on top of things. I borrowed a book and it was stolen, so I agreed to pay it off instead of returning it. Instead they keep charging me weekly fees, far beyond the amount that the book was worth. What's worse is, their system of taking down email addresses for reference is ridiculous and outdated. They can't retrieve information with a credit card number, and if they get your email address wrong, you are screwed."

"I rented a book and all the pages on top were brown/with water damage but since all the texts were readable I just used it without complain. Before the end of the semester I returned the book right away and after 2 days of acknowledgement receipt I received an email that I was charged $64 dollars for the water damage. I called the customer service and the guy-agent just told me straight that I CANNOT DO anything but pay that amount. I was asking if there is a way to find out if the damage was new or not, he simply said I have to pay for it. The Customer Service Agent was never helpful, he never showed he care for the customers.
WORST COMPANY, LENDING DAMAGED BOOKS AND MAKING THE CUSTOMERS PAY FOR THE DAMAGE."

"Be aware! Because I rented a book from bookrenter.com and after I returned the book the same condition that I received it they made me pay $94 fee because they said the book had been damaged by me. I spoke with customer service and they weren't helpful at all. They offer cheaper rentals but it might cost you a lot more in the end."

"I was robbed and potentially could still be robbed again. My fiance rented a college text book that arrived in horrible condition. Considering it was a rental, I didn't think anything of it. I used the book during the rental period as it was still readable. This book was a newer edition but looked as if the book was ran through the washing machine. This book obviously has had extensive use and torture; the book was tattered and torn; pages were falling out; water damage; the CD was cracked into pieces; the binding was falling apart; and most pages were highlighted and had a lot of writing in them.
Upon return, Bookrenter.com charged me for extensive damage. The issue is that the damage already existed in the first place. I was shipped a poor product. I was given $126.60 in charges for damages on top of the initial rental charge of $21.39. I called and made a formal complaint, their customer service said a manager would call me back to resolve the issue within 24 hours. It has been almost a month, and I still have not been able to speak to a manager. On top of that, I was just charged another $126.60 from this swindling company. When will this end? Who knows if they will charge me again. I just want this to end and I want ALL of my money back. $274.59, every last cent of it.
Dates of charges to my account: 1/04/13 $21.39 4/10/13 $126.60 4/29/13 $126.60 "
"I rented a book from this company. It was in very poor condition, but I didn't mind because I didn't think I would even need it for my course. I paid $20 and some change to rent it for 4 months. After only using it about one time for studying, I just always left it on the shelf on my desk. It never left and was never even taken anywhere with me. I returned the book before the due date. I got an email just now saying that I'm getting charged $50 to my debit card because they found "water damage" that has left the book unable to be used again. EXCUSE ME? This book was seriously a piece of CRAP when I received it. Definitely think they're up to something and trying to take my money in order to replace a piece of crap book that they failed to take care of. I don't even know what to do, they charged me $50 and that was the money I was supposed to use on gas to drive back home from my university that's hundreds of miles away. Total BS. Will never rent from this company EVER AGAIN and will definitely tell every student I know about this so that they don't use their services anymore. "
"I have sold a lot of textbooks to a lot of sites, and this is the worst one I've ever used. I submitted a buyback in mid-January. I shortly received an email saying that the book and been processed and I would receive my payment. A week or so goes by, and I don't receive it. I call, and they tell me to just keep waiting, I should receive it any time. A MONTH AND A HALF LATER, after more calls and emails saying the same thing, I finally receive another email saying that the book was received too late and they were not going to honor the price, and I would have to pay ten dollars to get my book back. Why in the world did it take them a month and a half to tell me that? Now it's in the middle of the semester and how am I going to sell it now? I've never had such awful customer service."
"I canceled an order of textbook rental and it has took them over one month to refund me back. I had to contact them twice and everytime their representative lied to me about the status of the refund process. In the end they blamed me for not returning it correctly and that's why it's taking so long. They have the worst customer service and don't know how to organize their teams. I would not reconmmend this book rental company. "
"I love bookrenter and use it every semester! Free shipping both ways, free returns and refunds before 3 weeks (so if you don't use the book, or got the wrong one, return for free, super easy), and they always have the lowest priced rentals every semester. I alwayssss get my books on time if not sooner, and never have a problem returning late because they send you reminder emails."
"The customer service is the absolute worst I have ever experienced. I ordered a book and when it was not delivered on time I had to drop the class that I needed the book for. I emailed customer service and was told basically that I was S.O.L. because I was two days past the return for refund policy. I explained to them that even though the tracking stated it had been delivered on the 23rd, it absolutely was NOT in my hands on that day. That was the day after class started so if it were true, I would not have had to drop my class. In no way, shape, or form should an individual be made to feel that they are not being honest. I understand every company has policies, but that does not mean that being courteous and polite should be tossed out the window. (Unless of course that is one their policies.)
Bookrenter's customer service skills are more than lacking, they are outrageously unacceptable. If BookRenter does not take the time to invest in their human capital and teach these people how to interact with society, the company is bound to dissipate sooner or later. Reputation is everything, and so far the word of mouth is not helping them in any way.
I highly recommend staying away from BookRenter unless you enjoy throwing your money away and being treated like a second class citizen. I have never had a problem with Chegg or their customer service, as they are very polite and obviously well trained. I will stick with them from now on."

"Horrible service. I rented a book for a summer class, and ended up needing it for part 2 of the class that fall. Thinking of buying it out, I go to the site and see that the price to buy the book used is around 91.00. I decided to re-rent the book. At the end of the semester, I was a late in returning the book, so I was charged a few temporary rental fees. I figured there should either be a very low or no balance at all to buy the book out at this point, so I get on the site again, and it still says 91.00. I called BookRenter's customer service and told them I had paid more than the buy out price in rentals, and was the price displayed on my account a mistake. I was told that no, they charge you the difference in the cost of a brand new book and what you've paid in rental fees. I explained to them that one, the book I had recieved in the summer was NOT brand new, but was used with obvious wear and tear (a chunk of the pages fell out after I had read from the book twice), and two, that the price displayed in august and then in january were still the same, so that didn't make any sense. I was told, in an annoyed voice, that there was nothing they could do. I will NOT be renting from this site again, especially when I could have bought a used book just as worn from my school for less than I've already paid in rental fees, AND without shipping and handling."
I rented a book this past semester, and due to the teacher's miss-communication I had to buy the book out for the following semester. So I did that and paid the difference and I kept getting emails saying that my book rental is due back. So I emailed the customer service with no reply. I then called customer service and no one answered I was listening to this music for an hour on the phone and still no answer. I emailed them again and then continued to call. I finally got a hold of someone but she said that all of the representatives were currently unavailable but she would have one contact me. I never got a call back. So I called them about four more times and still no answer just that stupid music! I then emailed them again and finally got a response, but the person said that I did not buy the book out but I extended the rental for no charge. BULL! I was charged the difference and it was taken out of my bank account! So I emailed them twice more, but no response. I will not order from this place again!"
"Ordered the book on Thursday, 1/10 at 3pm. Expedited shipping. Got an email on 1/12 stating my book had shipped. It is now Monday, 1/14, no book. Contacted customer service (on hold for 20 minutes waiting to talk to someone) Was finally told the book has not left the warehouse. Apparently, I did not read the small print on the website that states it takes 1-2 business days to process the order. My order came in on Thursday, so I guess Thursday to Monday is 1-2 days! What a terrible company. I have rented books from 3 other companies and the books were shipped immediately and I recieved them within 1-2 days, including a Saturday. BookRenter, never again!"
"This is the first time I have ever rented books. I ordered books from Bookrenter.com on 1/8/13. I paid $40 for expedited overnight shipping. It is 1/10/13 and still no books. I have homework that I can't do. They are saying it might not be until 1/14/13 in the evening!!! How is that expedited? I will be calling for a refund of the extra shipping charges. I ordered one from Chegg on the same day and I have been using it since yesterday. Chegg was slightly higher but worth it in the long run. I am able to study. Will never use Bookrenter again."

"Rented a book last semester for my son, at a much better price then any other site. They delivered it promptly to his dorm and contacted us a week before it was due with the option of extending or sending it back. They paid for the shipping both ways. I received a confirmation 2 days later that the book arrived. I was so pleased with them, that I immediately went to them to search for the books my son needed for this semester. Wold definitely recommend them."
