"Bookrenter sent me a badly damaged booked. It had been dropped in water/toilet, dried and so although it was legible, I contacted them to let them know. All was well until they charged my account the full price of the book and said I damaged the book!! I am livid. They will not get a dime of my money and I will take them to small claims court if I have to as a principle! I am honest, I would not return a book damaged ever!"
"Book renter sent me a highly imperfect book, with the cover nearly ripped off, markings all throughout it, and I had no complaints about this because I only needed it for one summer semester. However, when I sent it back, they automatically charged my account the retail price of the book for "damages," with no notice whatsoever. Four times the amount that I spent to rent it.I saved no money on this book, and I certainly could have gotten it cheaper elsewhere, not to mention Ididn'tt even get to keep it.They charged me the whole price and kept the book.Terrible customer service as well."
"I ordered a book for 40 ish dollars, same as the price for a rental in the campus bookstore, but the campus one was out of rentals and tried to get me to buy a brand new one for over a hundred and fifty dollars. It was really straightforward, I ordered the book, it came on time. Then my teacher said that we didn't "need" the book, so I returned it early to my campus bookstore (has some kind of connection to the site, you can apparently drop books off some places instead of shipping them back) and got a notice of refund email in my inbox a few minutes later. Cool.Because the book was returned for my reasons, not their bad, they didn't refund the 7 ish dollar shipping, but if I had opened a new one from the bookstore I'd be out over $100 (bookstore buyback SUCKS). Over all a really good experience, I'll probably use them again if I have problems with the campus bookstore."
"Beware...I paid extra for a "The Art of Public Speaking with connect access card" for online support vs. "The Art of Public Speaking" which did not include the access card. The book "with connect access card" purchase was acknowleged and shipment of the book "with connect access card" was acknowledged. When I received the book without the connect access card, I was told that Bookrenter's policy regarding "supplemental materials" was that their shipment was not guaranteed.and that the access card was supplemental material...even though I paid extra for the book with the card."
"I HAVE TO UPDATE THIS REVIEW: I just received a call from a bookrenter customer service representative. They called me in reference to this review. They apologized for the inconvenience I experienced. They also said they would refund to me the cost of the damaged book and told me how to avoid incurring this type of fee again. Due to this voluntary action, I think I will almost definitely use them again.I thought renting from this company was a good idea but I was sooooo wrong. To start with, I ordered 6 books total. The books were in not so gently used condition, but I thought nothing of it. Ended up dropping class at the very beginning of the semester (less than a week in) since it wasn't required and tried to get a refund for the book for it. I was told I was screwed because I was ONE DAY past my return date. Tried to see if I can get a partial refund or any type of credit but they were useless. Then fast forward to the end of the semester I send all my books back and get a charge of $61.56 for "major damage". No advanced notice, no phone call, just a extra charge on my card and a tiny note on my book renter account. When the books were already in iffy shape as it was, and all books were returned as the were received. If you rent from them (though I wouldn't suggest it) if any books look in bad shape request an exchange or give it back."
"never do biz here again. ordered books waited, waited, waited never came looked online to the tracking showed they were sent back to the co. so i called the rep said no they are on their way to you. they could not issue a refund i had to wait for them. the next day i got a email saying the books were sent back to the co did i want a refund. i called the rep again stated i could not get a refund i had to wait for the books would not not put a sup on the line. i called back listened to the order status on the auto system this again said my books were returned back to the co. asked for a sup or the rep who sent me an email 10 min later on hold this rep then states nope i cant talk to either and again i cant get a refund for a book that they have and i dont"
"DO NOT RENT FROM BOOKRENTER.COM. THEY CLAIMED THE BOOK I RETURNED HAD WATER DAMAGE AND WANTED ME TO CONTACT UPS ABOUT IT. REALLY?????, CHARGED MY ACCOUNT $134 AND CHANGE. NO F...ING WAY. I SENT IT BACK THE WAY I RECEIVED IT. IF UPS DAMAGED IT THATS NOT MY PROBLEM."
"BookRenter is not on top of things. I borrowed a book and it was stolen, so I agreed to pay it off instead of returning it. Instead they keep charging me weekly fees, far beyond the amount that the book was worth. What's worse is, their system of taking down email addresses for reference is ridiculous and outdated. They can't retrieve information with a credit card number, and if they get your email address wrong, you are screwed."
"I rented a book and all the pages on top were brown/with water damage but since all the texts were readable I just used it without complain. Before the end of the semester I returned the book right away and after 2 days of acknowledgement receipt I received an email that I was charged $64 dollars for the water damage. I called the customer service and the guy-agent just told me straight that I CANNOT DO anything but pay that amount. I was asking if there is a way to find out if the damage was new or not, he simply said I have to pay for it. The Customer Service Agent was never helpful, he never showed he care for the customers.WORST COMPANY, LENDING DAMAGED BOOKS AND MAKING THE CUSTOMERS PAY FOR THE DAMAGE."
"Be aware! Because I rented a book from bookrenter.com and after I returned the book the same condition that I received it they made me pay $94 fee because they said the book had been damaged by me. I spoke with customer service and they weren't helpful at all. They offer cheaper rentals but it might cost you a lot more in the end."
"I was robbed and potentially could still be robbed again. My fiance rented a college text book that arrived in horrible condition. Considering it was a rental, I didn't think anything of it. I used the book during the rental period as it was still readable. This book was a newer edition but looked as if the book was ran through the washing machine. This book obviously has had extensive use and torture; the book was tattered and torn; pages were falling out; water damage; the CD was cracked into pieces; the binding was falling apart; and most pages were highlighted and had a lot of writing in them.Upon return, Bookrenter.com charged me for extensive damage. The issue is that the damage already existed in the first place. I was shipped a poor product. I was given $126.60 in charges for damages on top of the initial rental charge of $21.39. I called and made a formal complaint, their customer service said a manager would call me back to resolve the issue within 24 hours. It has been almost a month, and I still have not been able to speak to a manager. On top of that, I was just charged another $126.60 from this swindling company. When will this end? Who knows if they will charge me again. I just want this to end and I want ALL of my money back. $274.59, every last cent of it.Dates of charges to my account:1/04/13 $21.394/10/13 $126.604/29/13 $126.60 "
"I rented a book from this company. It was in very poor condition, but I didn't mind because I didn't think I would even need it for my course. I paid $20 and some change to rent it for 4 months. After only using it about one time for studying, I just always left it on the shelf on my desk. It never left and was never even taken anywhere with me. I returned the book before the due date. I got an email just now saying that I'm getting charged $50 to my debit card because they found "water damage" that has left the book unable to be used again. EXCUSE ME? This book was seriously a piece of CRAP when I received it. Definitely think they're up to something and trying to take my money in order to replace a piece of crap book that they failed to take care of. I don't even know what to do, they charged me $50 and that was the money I was supposed to use on gas to drive back home from my university that's hundreds of miles away. Total BS. Will never rent from this company EVER AGAIN and will definitely tell every student I know about this so that they don't use their services anymore. "
"I have sold a lot of textbooks to a lot of sites, and this is the worst one I've ever used. I submitted a buyback in mid-January. I shortly received an email saying that the book and been processed and I would receive my payment. A week or so goes by, and I don't receive it. I call, and they tell me to just keep waiting, I should receive it any time. A MONTH AND A HALF LATER, after more calls and emails saying the same thing, I finally receive another email saying that the book was received too late and they were not going to honor the price, and I would have to pay ten dollars to get my book back. Why in the world did it take them a month and a half to tell me that? Now it's in the middle of the semester and how am I going to sell it now? I've never had such awful customer service."
"I canceled an order of textbook rental and it has took them over one month to refund me back. I had to contact them twice and everytime their representative lied to me about the status of the refund process. In the end they blamed me for not returning it correctly and that's why it's taking so long. They have the worst customer service and don't know how to organize their teams. I would not reconmmend this book rental company. "
"I love bookrenter and use it every semester! Free shipping both ways, free returns and refunds before 3 weeks (so if you don't use the book, or got the wrong one, return for free, super easy), and they always have the lowest priced rentals every semester. I alwayssss get my books on time if not sooner, and never have a problem returning late because they send you reminder emails."
