"i've been reasonably pleased with blockbuster, but mostly because i have low expectations. i switched from netflix because my movies had slowed to a trickle.

pros:
* blockbuster is sometimes faster, but hasn't been any slower than netflix.
* very good selection online and i like the weekly coupons to get a movie in store.

cons:
* i have received several damaged DVDs. but they have an easy means of reporting online and i've been sent replacements fairly quickly.
* processing and delivery times can be erratic. "

"Tried Netflix and found the turnaround time to be very slow. DVD's would take 3-5 days to arrive and almost as long to register as being returned. Signed up for the Blockbuster service and have been quite satisfied. The time from them shipping to my mailbox is 1 day. From the time I ship until they receive the DVD is about 2 days. There have been a few occasions when a DVD has been received by them and they haven't shipped the next selection out for a day or so. The in store coupons are also quite nice since you can rent something on the spur of the moment."

"So far so good. Customer service is excellent. I accidentally returned one of my own DVDs in the envelope. I realized this when I found the disc I meant to return in my player. I sen them an email before they even recieved the envelope. They assured me they would return my disc as soon as possible and I can send back theirs with another disc. They did as they promised and let me know when their disc was recieved so I would not worry about being charged.

Movies go out a little slow sometimes, but quick enough to where I would continue using."

"I have been a BlockBuster (BB) online rental customer for several years. I have not had any major issues with them. Occasionally, about 1 in 15 discs, I receive a cracked DVD. But this is due more to rough treatment by USPS than BB. USPS runs all mail here through their automated system and sometimes it cracks the disc. I guess the USPS machines were designed before mailing DVD's became popular. We're probably going to have to put up with cracked discs until the USPS machinery is too old to repair and must be replaced. ;^)

One problem I've had with BB is with ONE DVD title: "The Thin Red Line", 1964. I rented it 3 times. Unfortunately, the first one they sent me was cracked and the last 2 they sent me were the 1998 version staring Sean Penn. BB has since fixed this problem by no longer offering the 1964 version. Thanks to USPS, I'll probably never see the 1964 version. Apparently BB only had 1 in stock.

One irritating feature of BB's queue is when they say "Coming Soon", "Very Long Wait", and "Long Wait." For DVD's I have added which have these availabilities, their status has never changed. Essentially, this means "YOU'LL NEVER RENT THEM." Even DVD's which say "Short Wait", their status do not change for a month.

Luckily, most popular movies show as available for rent.

Last month, I also started a Netflix membership trial. I wanted to rent "ER - Season 7" and the BB status was "Very Long Wait", meaning I'd never rent it. Nearly every single Netflix title has an availability status of "Now." Netflix has a much larger selection of DVD's which are available for immediate rental.

The most notable difference between Netflix and BB is speed. Both companys' DVD's return to #25,xxx PO Boxes, same zip code. They are probably in the same USPS building! BB claims when I return a DVD to their retail store, they will ship faster. Yet, if I return them in the morning, NOTHING HAPPENS until the next day. It's the same when I return them via USPS. NOTHING happens for 2 days. When I return Netflix DVD's, they receive them the NEXT DAY and immediately mail the next DVD the same day. Netflix is ALWAYS one day faster.

Finally, Netflix's website Queue is much quicker and easier to use than BB's. When you change a DVD's position by dragging and dropping, it's immediate. For BB's Queue, when you do the same, it redraws the entire page and your CPU usage jumps to 100% for several seconds, causing FireFox to freeze or stutter. Netflix's Queue is far better.

If you want to exchange DVD's in a store for an immediate rental, then use BB. If you don't want to pay extra for this or don't have a BB store near you, use Netflix instead.

"This review concerns Blockbuster's online rental business, which is currently called Blockbuster Total Access. I chose Blockbuster over Netflix because of the monthly coupons for local stores that Blockbuster offered. My service went somewhat well until I moved to a smaller town. It took 1-2 days longer to receive my DVDs. And since there wasn't a local store the coupons were of no use to me other than when I took the time to sell them on eBay. Also, there were many titles that were in my cue for months and they were never sent to me. It seems for titles like those that multiple people are waiting ages for they would buy an extra copy.

During the final month of my subscription I had a couple of problems. One of the DVDs I requested had the proper sleeve, but the disc was something else. No doubt it's easy for someone to get a copy of the latest Batman movie if they rent it and then replace it with their personal copy of Attack of the 50 ft Woman. Blockbuster should perform better quality control. I sent it back and the only thing they did to rectify the problem was send me the correct movie. I think I should have received an extra rental for that month. A second movie I rented at that time was so badly scratched that it wouldn't play in any player in the house. I was unable to watch it and just sent it back.

Rather than bothering to cancel my service, I just didn't update my credit card information once it expired. I still have an account with them years later, but they eventually stopped sending me renewal notices. I probably won't do business with them again unless some form of SOPA passes."

"blockbuster online rental sucks. They give you a priority list and then send you a movie on your list that is number 36 and all the movies are available."

"I recently just join this online rental. And they suck. I have rent close to 50 DVD w/ this online company. And recently I have a problem w/ them. I rent an anime, Inu Yasha, Vol. 15: Broken Fang. The problem is, I never get the correct disc. I return the disc and request them to resent the correct DVD. They sent the disc out 7 times. 6 out of 7, i got the wrong disc. And the other time, i never receive the disc. This isn't the first time, i didn't receive the DVD i request.
And they don't even have a real customer service. I can't even call them??? I made another request to resend the DVD yesterday(6/4/2005), and instead they ship out the next movie inline. They are ignorance, and didn't want to solve the problem that they have and the frustration that they cause to the customer."

"Quite possibly the worst ever in terms of DVD Rentals..they cant touch Netflix with a flagpole. Blockbuster's DVD rental reeks of incompetence - shoddy response in terms of customer service, cheeky practices to stall regular 'unlimited' service and abysmal handling of rentals in terms of availablity and wait time.
I signed on for this service on Sep 15th, 2005 with a free one month trial to their 3 out at a time unlimited rentals plan. The first two orders of 3 at a time were dispatched and returned on time. And then started the 'throttling'. ALthough I received notice of shipment for 3 dvds, I received only two..the third one arrived two days after the forst two. And in a month, this finally turned out to be a 1 DVD out a time rental because of the erratic shipment and receipt of the DVDs. I understand they try to minimize the 'send out' in order to cut losses or to deal with aggressive customers. But what I describe below amounts to the worst in terms of handling.
On 9/29, I received shipment notice for a DVD titled 'Bulworth'. Two days later I received a movie titled 'High Fidelity' instead of Bulworth. I reported this on their online customer service page and requested that 'Bulworth' be re-sent. But that never happened. I received notice that Bulworth was received and my next DVD from the queue was sent. It took me another email to force them to mail out 'Bulworth'.
Quite often, they do not have any of the movies you put in the queue. The 'short wait' turns to 'long waits' and thus the titles remain in the queue. This as opposed to Netflix where I rarely encounter long waits or delays. There is no point in waiting because the titles never ever make it to dispatch.
During the course of the rental period, I selected and added 'Quick and the dead - Superbit edition' to the queue which as usual had a 'long wait'. After a few days, I clicked on this title in my queue to see that the superbit edition had been replaced with the normal non-superbit version. I had to thus remove it from my queue.
But heres the worst of all. I had enough of their service and so canceled the service on 10/15/2005 at around 7pm (my next billing cycle was to start 10/16/05) I received an email confirming the cancellation. Three days later, I received notice of two more DVDs being shipped. I logged into my account to see that I had been billed on 10/16/05. I called up Customer Service (the number is hidden in their website and is never obvious) and the CSR told me that I had to cancel before 6pm otherwise I would be billed. I asked her where this information was mentioned on the website - she refused to listen to me and went about saying the same thing like a broken record. At one point I lost it and yelled at her only after which, she let me cancel my account.
On 10/18, even after cancelling the service, I received notice of shipment of the original Swedish version 'Insomnia - Criterion Collection' Three days later, I received the American remake of Insomnia and not the Swedish version I had requested.
And thus ended my Blockbuster experience. Netflix is years ahead of Blockbuster, believe me."

"I have twice been given the wrong movie and have had to return to the store. I will try Netflix because I think its not worth the hassle to drive to Blockbuster. I wasnt happy about late fees and their claim of No Late Fees. This is why I wont try their online service."
