"I am INCREDIBLY pleased with my purchase from Better World Books. I'm an inner city music teacher and have been scrounging up teacher manuals over the past few months since the district is too broke to buy me materials. I found the newest edition of the Silver Burdett Making Music series for K, 1 and 2 (I already found 3, 4 and 5 elsewhere) for under $16! THAT'S UNHEARD OF. They're in spectacular condition-some bends in the spiral spine but for how much they cost, I can't believe how nice they are. They did originally send me the wrong book instead of the K teacher manual, but after inquiring on facebook, I heard back immediately, they found the book I ordered, shipped it right away and allowed me to keep the book sent by mistake (the 5th grade resource book so I can definitely use it). LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!! "
"I ordered a book from them on Abebooks, they didn't had it. Apparently they didn't removed it from their listing when it was purchased. But they informed me of this only two days after the order, when it was already marked as "Shipped" on Abebooks. I was hugely disappointed."
"This company is NOT a Charity. Their REAL goal is to get college students and other people to donate their used textbooks and other books so they can resell them FOR THEIR OWN PROFIT. They may send a few books to some foreign countries, but it by no means the nicest books they collect --just what they don't need for themselves because the books are outdated or not in demand, etc..
It would be better to donate books to a booksale raising money for a worthy cause than to donate to Better World Books. The collection bins are extremely misleading... the books students put in there are being used as a collection bin to get things to sell on ebay, amazon, abebooks, etc. for FOR PROFIT BUSINESS. Same with THRIFT BOOKS or the READING TREE BINS. Just because something says "DONATE" on it, does NOT mean your donation is going to a charity. "
"This site is great. I bought 9 books for around $30. The books are not in perfect condition obviously (they are used) but they are still in very good condition. I had actually put in the wrong shipping address and did not notice until after I placed the order. I emailed them and the very next morning they had replied and corrected my shipping address. I placed two orders, one day apart, and received both orders six days later. Not only does this site offer affordable books, but it is for a good cause. I'm not sure what happened with the previous reviews, but I had an excellent experience with BWB and encourage anyone to give them a try. Most books also had free shipping and I actually found a coupon online that gave me a 10% discount if I bought 2 or more books. Great site with a great purpose."
"I ordered two books and received only one. I don't think I'll be getting it, because it's been half a year since I placed my order. The reviews speak for themselves (and I wish I had read them before ordering from BW Books). Obviously, this place has horrible service, and you're risking it if you order from them."
"I was hugely disappointed in this site. I used it as it had the cheapest deal on a book which was quite pricey. I didn't have my item until TWO MONTHS LATER. Couldn't believe it. Not just that, the books pages had some defect and stick together and each page has to be unpeeled, which I don't think was normal for the book at all. It was gold binded on the edges, but something was not right with how the pages stuck together. It pays to not always choose the cheapest place to get a book. The places I've gotten books the cheapest, I always have to wait weeks. Never again going to use this site. "
"A little over three weeks ago I ordered a book from Better World Books. They advertise that they ship your order the next day after receiving it. Twenty days after placing the order with them I am still waiting for my books. Now they are telling me that since I just paid for regular shipping that it could take a month for me to receive what I paid for. I do not recommend this place. I will be surprise if I ever get what I paid for."
"Ordered this book on 9/16/2012---bought it...didn't rent it...still don't have it on 9/26/2012. If I am totally desperate (as I was)...I would buy it somewhere else...read reviews...didn't want to buy it here, but was not available anywhere else...use this place as a last resort!!! "
"The book we ordered/received from Better World was graded ‘Acceptable’, yet two pages were completely torn, and one was missing (out of only 61 total). It was ex-library, which information was not in the description, and although I received an email saying that it had been shipped, it was a week later before it actually arrived. Because we needed some of the info contained in the book, we felt it wasn't right to send it back, or ask for a refund, although it would be great to find out what is on the missing page - it is right in the middle of the critical data pages. Needless to say, we will not be buying from Better World Books in the future."
"I ordered a text book for a computer class from Better World Books and all I received in the mail was literally two tab pages from that book! and they proceeded to tell me that unfortunately I would have to incur the shipping costs if I wanted to return the cardboard! I am incredibly displeased with what I have received from them. This is false advertising and I strongly recommend that you do not order your books from them! Use amazon or any other of the dime a dozen textbook websites! "
"I just wanted to say THANK-YOU to Better World Books! I'm about to go into university and wanted low-cost textbooks since my family isn't the most financially stable, and that's what I got! I was actually paranoid about ordering them so close to the beginning of the school year since I'm moving to a city 6 hours away, but I got them right in time! They're also in amaszing condition for being in "good" condition- there was only a few highlights in my physics book! Hopefully I can get the other textbooks I need soon at a lower-cost on their website. Their free-shipping policy is amazing! I definitely reccommend them for the poor university student!"
"As a Domer, a big part of me is very sympathetic with the social activist element that stands behind "Better World Books". But as someone who buys secondhand books, and looks for these books in catalogues and on-line, I feel it's only fair to forewarn potential customers that "Better World Books" are not antiquarian booksellers. Their stock is heavily drawn from discarded volumes from institutional libraries and from private donations. In itself, this is fine: The books simply need to be appropriately described ("acceptable", maybe even "good" condition; "ex-library"; "highlighting"; etc.) and priced accordingly. This is where the lack of experience in secondhand book sales is sorely evident among the good people at "Better World Books". Their interest in raising money for literacy is more than commendable, but that unfortunately leads them to attempt to sell books that most antiquarian booksellers would not because of their poor condition. What's more frustrating to potential customers are the inaccurate descriptions of these books; a book, for example, with highlighting and pages torn out is, by definition, *not* in "very good" condition. Their inexperience is also, I'm sorry to say, reflected in the pricing of the books. One can, no doubt, find books from "Better World Books" that are in the condition described and at a fair price, but the descriptions given should not necessarily be assumed to reflect the industry standards."
"Immediately after placing my order, I discovered that the book I ordered was an instructor's edition. (It had the same ISBN as the regular textbook!) Without hesitating, I sent an email requesting my order to be canceled so that I may order the correct book. The next morning, I received a reply stating that they would have to contact the merchant to ensure shipment hadn't occurred yet and that I would be notified once contact was made. Throughout the day, I receive no new news. I kept checking the tracking of the shipment, which displayed that it had not been shipped yet. I received a shipment confirmation from the merchant the following day! No contact from "Better World Books"!! I acknowledge my error in placing the order, but I acted promptly!! Not even a courtesy email or anything... They have displayed poor customer service. And also, they lost out on making a larger sale. The book I needed was more costly than the instructor's edition!"
