"I wish I would have found this site earlier, it would have saved me a lot of headache and time. Just like many of the other posters here, I was lured in by the low prices and well put together site (I would call it profesional, but there is nothing profesional about 86th Photo & Video (P&V) except their ability to steal).
Just before Christmas I was looking for a camera (Sony DSC-T200) which was an amazing $260 at the afore mentioned company which was $140 below the price at Best Buy where I had already purchased it, but was looking for a better deal.
I called the company and asked if the camera was in stock, but they said due to the great price and time of year, they were sold out, but were expecting a shipment in two to three weeks. My wife is very thrifty and I figured she would appreciate the deal. I wrapped the Best Buy camera and gave it to her for Christmas and after she opened it, I told her she had the option of keeoing that one, or waiting for the camera I had ordered. She decided to wait.
After two to three weeks, about mid January, I called 86th P&V to get an update on where the order stood. I gave the operator my order number and after looking up my order, I was told the shipment hadn't came in yet, but they were expecting it soon. About an hour later I received an email stating that the order was backordered five to six weeks from the date of the email. That puts me getting the camera sometime in March.
If this was a Nintendo Wii or Tickle Me Elmo just after release, I would understand and be forgiving of short supplies, but this camera is available everywhere and there doesn't seem to be a short supply in other, reputable, stores.
I checked the 86 P&V website a week later, out of curiosity, to see if the website showed the camera in stock and it did. So I called the company and told the operator I was interested in the camera and wanted to know if it was in stock. The operator (Robert, I had to ask for a name) stated that they indeed did have the camera in stock. I asked how many and he stated they had two. I then asked why my order was back-ordered another five to six weeks. He asked what color I ordered and I told him silver (should have asked him what colors were in stock or initially asked about colors) and he repLIED that they only had the red cameras in stock. I told him that red would be fine since it was for my wife.
Now here is where it gets fun. Robert next starts in with the, "You know the camera doesn't come with a battery or charger, right?" (I had prepped for this (after reading complaints about the company) by calling Sony prior to this call and verifying they do not offer a package without the charger and battery and in fact the camera comes with a bunch of accessories.) I then asked him if they were selling open box cameras. Robert repLIED that all of their cameras were brand new in the box straight from Sony. I then informed him of my conversation with Sony and after a few choice words from Robert, he hung up on me.
I have canceled my order and notified my credit card company. I didn't think it was legal to conduct business this way, but apparently this company is able to get away with it. I will never shop this site again and will warn all I can about their shoddy sales tactics and lies. I understand trying to make a buck and upsale accessories, but lying straight faced to the customer in order to defraud them is unconscionable."
"Why oh why didn't I check here first? I have the same story as everyone else - upon receiving an email to call to verify and complete my order, the price of my camera more than doubled as "Brian" tried to upsell me. I hesitated, then refused to confirm and told him I'd call back. Double-checked the prices of the battery, memory card and charger and found them SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper elsewhere. Called back to cancel my order and got his voice mail so I left a message instructing him to cancel the entire order. Based on other stories, I'm not expecting a call back, but now I get to wait anxiously and see if they try to charge my card anyway.
DO NOT BUY FROM THESE GUYS. I can't believe they're in business.
"DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT place an order! They send you an e-mail to verify your order and then try to sell you over-priced batteries & memory cards! When you say no and you think all is all-set, YOU have to send e-mails and make more calls and then you are now told your camera is back-ordered!! SCAMMERS!! Save yourself the aggrevation!!! SHOP ELSEWHERE!!!"
I placed an order like everyone else, thinking I was getting a nice deal on a garmin nuvi 260w for 205$. I ignored there high price parts. Got an email on sunday wanting to confirm my order and then tried to sell me a 2GB san disk card for 150$ saying its a special 100$ off. I said no thanks I will look else where. Here is there email asking me to call "sean"

"UPDATE 10/13/2008: I AM SHOCKED THAT THIS FRAUD IS STILL GOING ON 3 MONTHS LATER. I DID FILE A REPORT BACK IN JULY WITH THE FBI INTERNET FRAUD WEBSITE BUT I HAVEN'T HEARD FROM THEM YET EITHER!
Well I got nailed.
I sure wish I had seen this site before I bothered to order anything from this ridiculous outfit.
Last night I ordered the Nikon Coolpix P80 from the website. Great deal I thought. Right.
This morning I got the e-mail saying I needed to call the 800 number to "verify" my order.
I called, and after being on hold for over an hour got some sleaze-bag on the phone who told me (surprise!) my credit card expiration date did not got through. LOL- they sure don't change their tune do they?
After I verified the date, he congratulated me on my wonderful choice of a camera and proceeded to try and sell me the battery and the data card at crazy prices. I told him politely "I'm not interested in purchasing anything other than the camera at this time". He then blathered for a second about everybody needs these batteries for the camera, and when I cut him off again, he informed me my camera was on back order and I should get it in about three weeks.
2 hours later I got an e-mail saying the camera was on back order for 6-8 weeks and that I could cancel the order by replying to the e-mail with cancel order #_____ in the subject line. I did this but still haven't gotten an e-mail confirming the order is indeed canceled.
I then tried to call them at 3:30pm EST because the e-mail said they are open until 5pm, but the recording says they are open until 2pm, so no luck there.
This is scary and I did file a complaint with the FBI internet fraud, not because I've lost any money (yet) but after reading this site and many others, I want to know how the heck these people have stayed in business for so long.
I don't care who they've paid off- we need to find out who that is as well!!
Next step is canceling the credit card- I am that leery.
Please BEWARE!!!!"

"I ordered a new Sony HDR-SR 11 Handycam at an unbelievably low price. Received the same E-mail to call and confirm and same aggressive pressure to buy overpriced accessories. I succumbed to the pressure and bought an overpriced battery and charger. About 1/2 hour later, I thought better of it and called back to cancel the order. I was informed by "Brian" that the order had already been shipped and could not be cancelled-- pretty miraculous given that others who did not fall for the pitch were being told the camera was backordered.
When I received the camera, there were two still pictures on it that were obviously taken by a previous user. It appears that what I received was not a new camera but a customer return or refurb.
"I want to thank all of the previous customers who have reviewed this store. You kept me from wasting a lot of my time. I ordered a Canon camera yesterday afternoon. I called the company to make sure they got my order and after waiting on hold for 15 minutes, was hung up on before I could question the service rep about the availability of the camera. That made me suspicious. So I found the store's ratings here at resellersratings.com and read other buyers' comments. I was ready for Steve when I got the email to verify my order with a phone call. Steve told me that my camera did not come with batteries. I said their web site said that it did. He said those batteries were no good. I said they work fine but they aren't rechargeable, and that I was not going to buy any of the high-priced accessories they sold at their website. He said OK and that he would go ahead and send my order in for processing. So I asked if the camera was in stock and he said that it showed that it was. I asked him to please check for me now to make sure. As has happened to others, he then came back on and told me there was a 12 day backorder on the camera. I then asked to have my order canceled. I have received 2 emails since then. The first notified me that the camera was on back order. The second email notified me that my order was indeed canceled. I can only hope that they were not lying when they wrote in the last email that my credit card information had been deleted from their system. I am so glad I didn't waste any more time with this company. Don't bother looking at this vendor's site."
I am writing on behalf of 86 Street Photo. We are a photo lab that have been in business since 1957. Located on Upper East Side of Manhattan. Last six months or so we have been receiving intensive phone calls regarding internet orders and complains about fraud. I want to assure everyone that we are a totally different company that DO NOT sell Electronics , neither in our real store or on the internet. Our website address is similar "www.86streetphoto.com" it does NOT contain video in it. Please be very careful when you call or send packages back to the company you purchased it from.
