"Update 8/28/2002:
Apparently the FTC doesn't think much of this companies practices either, so obviously the horrible customer service discussed here is NOT a few isolated incidents as Juliana C. would like everyone to believe. I complained that the cartridges on your website were not CLEARLY labled as remanufactured at the time I purchased and that your refunds were non-existent. The FTC agreed with me and charged 123inkjets with violating laws specifically in those two areas. Smell that? That's justice!

From: http://consumeraffairs.com/news02/inkjets.html

WASHINGTON, Aug. 23, 2002 -- On-line sellers of generic and remanufactured inkjet printer cartridge refills have agreed to pay a $40,000 civil penalty to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that they engaged in deceptive practices.

The FTC alleges that E-Babylon, Inc. and its two principals, Michael Zaya and Aidin Yousif, deceptively represented on their Web sites that their inkjet printer replacement cartridges were new, brand-name items, rather than remanufactured or generic items.

The Commission also alleges that the defendants violated the Mail or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule (Mail Order Rule) by failing to advise consumers of their right to cancel and receive a refund if the defendants were unable to ship the products on time.

According to the FTC's complaint, E-Babylon, based in Simi Valley, California, and its principals operate over a dozen Web sites - including "ProInkjets.com" and "123inkjets.com." Through these sites, the defendants sell remanufactured and generic replacement cartridges for inkjet printers.

"Remanufactured" refers to a used, brand-name cartridge that is refilled with third-party ink. Because this process is not feasible for all cartridges, the defendants also market new, generic cartridges for use in some printers. According to the FTC, the defendants marketed their remanufactured and generic cartridges as brand-name products, then compared their prices for these products with the brand-name products available at office superstores.

The complaint alleges that the defendants misrepresented that their products were new, brand-name inkjet cartridges. In addition, the complaint alleges, the defendants advertised that dissatisfied consumers could receive "no questions asked" refunds, yet many consumers experienced significant difficulties in obtaining refunds. Further, because the defendants had no procedures in place to comply with the FTC's Mail Order Rule, they did not advise thousands of consumers who purchased their products of their right to cancel and receive a refund when the defendants determined they would not be able to ship on time.

The proposed consent decree to settle the charges requires the defendants to pay a $40,000 civil penalty. The proposed decree also requires the defendants to provide redress to consumers who were entitled to, but did not receive, a refund pursuant to either the defendants' money-back guarantee or the Mail Order Rule.

In addition, the proposed decree would prohibit the defendants from: claiming that any product is a new, brand-name product, unless the representation is true; misrepresenting any refund offer; and violating the Mail Order Rule. Finally, the decree would require the defendants to respond promptly to future refund requests.

"DO NOT deal with these people. They are absolutely dishonest and un-reliable. I placed an order, they charged my card immediately, and one month later I was STILL emailing them to cancel my order and remove the charge (which they NEVER answered). The VERY DAY I had the charges reversed by my credit card bank, they send an email which stated "We regret if you misunderstood..." (as it was MY fault), totally disregarding all the emails and phone calls sent to them in the one month time cancelling my order, and one week later I magically receive my "order". Out of three cartridges, TWO were DRY. I contacted them for an RMA, and needless to say, no replies. NO communication, NO attempts via email or phone calls to rectify my problems, and a crap order in the end. Thankfully, the charges remained reversed, the BBB was contacted and sent all paperwork, etc. Oh, and AFTERWARD, I was spammed from more accounts with "123inkjets" as the sender, but each coming from a NEW and DIFFERENT address, having nothing to do directly with 123inkjets. Stay away at all costs. Seriously, stay away.

"Purchased black ink for my OfficeJet G85 and received the package after 5 full days. I happen to live within short driving distance from where it was shipped and it STILL took 5 days. The ink quality is so-so and it doesn't come in the best packaging. I would probably not shop here again."

"Negatives:
They spam every E-Mail account I have more than any other spammer ever has. Beware of giving your main E-Mail address to them unless you want spam even if you opt out.
Their free shipping is post office parcel post which is probably the slowest method of shipping there is in the United States. When I checked out with this last order I placed, I didn't see any options of choosing any other method of shipping.

I placed this order with them on 11/9/04 and it was supposedly shipped on 11/9/04 but have yet to receive the order as of 11/22/04. 2 weeks or more is ridiculous for shipping time. But you can bet I received spam from them since then...

"I thought ordering from 123inkjets would be a breeze. But it turned out to be a very bad dream. Not only do 123inkjet customer reps patronize its customers over the phone, but they also offer minimal help. I ordered a value pack BCI 24 (15 cartridges). Today is Oct 13 and I still have not received my package (orderd on Oct 6 and I live in the same state as this POS company). I will not do business with them again and I will certainly not recommend them to friends or family.
I would also like to add that 123inkjets issued me a phony trakcing number. I told them the tracking number never worked and that the USPS people said I needed to be issued a new one. 123inkjets's response: too bad for me

UPDATE: I received my package today (Oct 14). My tracking number finally began working this morning. But I'm afraid that's too little too late. I was satisfied with the packaging of my product but was disappointed to find that 123inkjets also uses C&G cartridges, just as Abcink.com does. I was hoping 123inkjets would use a more reputable vendor. I have used C&G cartridges before and have witnessed one black cartridge last about 20 pages in my MP 390.
123inkjets also included a sticker in my package that they want me to "stick" to my computer so I remember to order from them the next time around. I won't be doing that.
In summary, I won't buy from 123inkjets again because of 1) Inept and patronizing customer reps (extremely poor customer service) 2) No tracking service for package until the day the package arrives at my door, and 3) a complete lack of respect from 123inkjets.com
To boot, I would not recommend doing business with 123inkjets.com or Abcink.com. The next time I need ink I will try my luck with PrintPal or Ink4art. I can only hope and pray that my experience is better with another company."

"I was so excited when I did a little shopping around on the internet and found this company! They are much cheaper than our previous inexpensive ink provider. We have two Brothers and one Epson, and we use the black ink much more than the colors. With this company, we were able to purchase more black inks than the colors instead of having to lump them together and end up with way more colors than we normally use.

However, when you have just put in a cartridge and your pages still come out VERY PALE GRAY, the money saved and "wasted color cartridges" don't matter. I am extremely frustrated with 123 Inkjets because the doggone ink cartridges simply do not work. This is a problem, because my work requires that I can actually READ something that has just come through on the printer. Sure, s/h was free and no tax was added because of the volume of cartridges purchased, but they are utterly useless. Long story short: I'm ordering a set of cartridges from my previous inexpensive ink provider.

123 ain't for me,

"I have ordered from them a couple times. Had a problem with one toner cartridge and they replaced without a problem.

I use their toner for a Brother all in one."

"I have placed three (3) orders with 123inkjets.com over the last 3 years for aprox $250 each. I have received SO many inkjet cartridges from 123inkjets.com of various types that do not work correctly, it's pathetic. I kept ordering becuuse theyr laser toner worked great and some of their inkjets worked and I WAS STUPID. On the last order however, 4 out of 7 cartriges were faulty that I know of for sure. All of them are now out of the time limit the warrantee as I am the office manager for a small busy office and I am too busy to arrange to send them back even if they were still under warrantee. I just tried a new one from 123inkjets.com tonight that I took out of the box and the blue doesn't print (HP78A series). I had to throw out about 6 of the HP45A series we use for our design jet plotter; those would not print every line, skipping multiple plot lines. The black one I put in my home inkjet is also streaky. I am no longer going to purchase any more of their products. Bye Bye 123inkjets.com, you're quality on your refilled inkjets is HORRIBLE. ALSO, their customer service tickets go unanswered. Bike."

"I received 3 black cartridges total for my Brother MFC9200C...none of them worked. I spent 3 calls with Brother and reset the machine and couldn't find out the problem. I & Brother eventually determined that the machine must need serviced since 3 cartridges in a row couldn't be faulty, right???? WRONG..I took it in to an authorized service dealer and found that the ink cartridges were all low on ink, that's why the machine kept reading "ink empty". I filed a complaint with the company for the $25 service charge. They refused. I filed a credit card dispute for the cost of the cartridges. I have yet to receive a reply, but have a temporary refund.
They told me several times they were new cartridges, but after reading other complaints, I'm sure they were remanufactured."

"Ordered 2 cartridges for my HP Officejet. Couple of weeks went by, no carts. Called them up, said one cart was backordered. Waited another week, still nothing, even though they said both shipped. Cust service rep did some research, & found out that UPS damaged the order & returned it back to them. They then sent a replacement via UPS 2-day. Of course, the color cart died on me recently, & it wasn't even halfway used! I probably won't buy from these guys again; gonna stick with the real HP carts from now on. Buyer beware."
