Their customer service and sales people are very rude and insensitive, much like CompUSA. You are lucky to find a friendly, knowledgeable employee in their store, who can actually say more than one word at a time. They will let you return items within the time frame, no problem. But their returns people cannot do much more than "grunt" or nod I think.
I wanted to buy a 19" monitor there the other day, and waited and waited for assistance, for almost 20 minutes before someone noticed me. The counter clerk was too busy talking to a country guy about his Stars Wars game. There definitely is not a premium put on customers wanting to buy a high priced items there - it doesn't make a difference to them. I had to carry the monitor, weighing about 75 pounds in a huge, awkard box, across the store and out to my car by MYSELF! I could not believe they didnt' even offer to help me, not one damn person. I have bought from BestBuy in the past, but will stick to small, non-expensive merchandise (games, CD's) only now, when I go to there, if at all.
I would never be foolish enough to buy a computer from them, let alone a Hewlett Packard. That is insanity. But I feel sorry for the person who did below.

They are well known for having 2nd rate systems. Pity the poor person who tries to get a refund. I spent weeks battling with rude and insensitive local management. I finally had to have a lawyer write a letter to get them to fork over my refund. Best Buy is not in the business of customer service at all.

I've bought many computer items at Best Buy and have had good luck. Selection is very good, prices are competetive with other local retailers, and returns/exchanges are handled without incident. I have found the computer sales staff in some stores not very eager to assist. They have lost a few major computer sales from me due to this, but if it's something I can pick up myself and take to the cashier then everything goes well.

I ordered a 128mB, PC-100 DIMM, which arrived defective. Salesman was very helpful and friendly in helping to determine the problem. Returned defective chip and a replacement was shipped out promptly. An overall good experience.
Thanks
P.S. Price was decent with no "hidden" shipping charges.

I have been going to best buy for computer parts/games for about 7 years, and they seem to have descent prices and a good selection. The salespeople can be nice and since they don't get paid by commission they don't hoard around you. However, sometimes I have looked at video cards and whenever I ask a question they guy tries to fluff around it (presumebly because he does not know the anwser) and then he starts talking about why I should get the AGP version instead of PCI, I try to explain I am not a newbie and actully probably know more than him, but he persists, I finally get away from him and look at some older video cards away from the desk. I find a voodoo Banshee and look at the price, $69 before the $20 rebate. This was obviously a mistake as the next cheapest thing was some off-brand video card. I ask one of the salespeople if it could possibly be a mistake and without even checking they say no. I don't even argue and immeadiatly check out with the $49 3-d accelerated video card (it was a very good deal). The next day I come back and the price has been raised to $89 after rebate. It becomes quite obvious after spending some time in the store that teenagers are mostly running the store, and the pricing always seems to high or too low. I constantly find items mis-marked and sometimes when I try to get help I find a group of 5 teenagers talking when there are about 10 people asking for help. I'd recommend you go to your local store sometime and see if they mis-mark prices as badly as they do at my store....be warned though, don't ask questions....the teenagers can anwser them and they will always treat you like a newbie.

I purchased a Samsung DVD 709 from Best Buy Memphis on offer for $199. Good price. First problem - the salesman sold me a S-video cable (for $25!) as he said there wasn't one in the box... There was. Best buy did take the unopened $25 cable back and give me a refund but I still had to travel all the way back to the store and queue for 20 minutes.
The DVD player seemed to work well for a few weeks until 'The Matrix' was released. It was then I realised that the 709 won't play multi-layered discs without a firmware upgrade. Best Buy refused to refund my money and stated it wasn't their problem (rudely). Samsung's customer support was superb and second to none, and denounced Best Buy for not refunding the money, or telling me about the 709's limitations in the first place especially since they were aware of it (so much for expert advice) - Samsung stated that ALL resellers were informed about this situation by a press release months before my purchase.
I eventually shipped the dvd player to a company in Arkansas called Ford Electronics for the software upgrade. They were great and did it for free. I had to outlay $30 shipping to send it there but they shipped it back for free too.
With the exception of Best Buy, everyone involved with the DVD player handled the problem superbly.
Footnotes - it now plays multilayered discs. Best Buy has stopped selling it.
