certainly the most discounted laptops on the web, but there shouldn't be any price difference in the configurations; meaning if there is a low price laptop that has 160 GB memory for an additional $110 then it should be $110 for the same 160 GB in a higher end model. online gaming is cheap but it s about getting the laptop first though. it took me 4 months to save up for a laptop. it's not low end for sure but it's not the top rated in which case i could have afforded but since the config.'s differ in price by 100's of dollars i had to go with what i got. oh you should also look into throwing in a T-shirt with your logo on it. i'd be proud wear it!

This is my 3rd purchase of a laptop from discountlaptops.com My previous experiences were positive and so I am a repeat customer. This time has not been quite so positive. While the staff is friendly and helpful, a number of mistakes add up to look like careless indifference.
1) 12 Dec 2005: After I selected the laptop I wanted based on the description/price posted on the web site, when I went to the order form, the 1024 MB RAM advertised with the base price was not there, only 512 MB, to "upgrade" to 1024 raised the price. :-(
2) After oredering the laptop, I was called a day or two later and told that my order had not been processed because the optional 120 GB 7200 RPM disk I had requested was not available. :-( OK, I accepted a smaller disk.
3) Next, another day later, my laptop was still not processed because they need to inform me of another change in the published specification regarding the WiFi card. Not a big deal in itself....
4) 15 Dec 2005: I received an email saying that my order was being processed and would ship that day :-) We had agreed that it would ship by UPS since I live out in the country and UPS is familiar with delivering to my rural address. But after a few days the shipping info and tracking number was still not available from the website :-(
5) 19 Dec 2005: So I called and enquired, I was told that it looked like not only had my order not been shipped but it had not been processed. I was promised a call back or email with a status. While I called in the morning, I never received any word back that day.
6) 20 Dec 2005: Today I received an email stating that my order shipped yesterday by UPS. But the tracking number provided is a FedEx tracking number :-( No explanation was provided as to why the delay, the email was unsigned.
7) I will update this when I get the laptop, each of the above is fairly minor (except for the 512 MB RAM) but in total it adds up to a less than sterling performance. Rating: some room for improvement

Following is the reply sent to customer on 12/20 once the review was posted. I have removed the original content to cut down the reply size
We have since been in contact with Philip and are working on a resolution to meet his expectations.
*************************************
Hello Phillip,
As the owner of the shop, I and appreciate your feedback. It is important for me to hear about these types of experiences so they can be addressed.
We have a fairly good accounting on the time-line of an order. I wanted to share that with you along with my responses.
1) ******. There appeared to be a typo mistake on the quick description table. The 2381 was just barley set up and it appears it should have been looked over before going live. I can share your frustration with this and have addressed with with our staff.
At least the actual configurator which is where you actually build the system on our site was correct from the beginning.
I have refuned the cost of the upgrade ($75) back to your credit card and updated the invoice.******
2) ********Even though it may have seemed like it took a lot longer, the call was placed just the next morning as soon as we opened for business. Perhaps this time-line give a better picture
12/12/05 3:47PM - Order received
12/12/05 4:30PM - Conference call completed with Card card bank to verify billing/shipping address
12/12/05 5:09PM - Expected shipping notice received at DL from ChemUSA production
12/13/05 9:12AM - DL is notified by ChemUSA of a hard drive shortage, we need to contact customer to find out more. We then start trying to reach you to discuss.
12/13/05 12:07PM - Updated configuration confirmation sent after we spoke to yo on the phone a few times regarding the hard drive shortage.
3) ****Another problem that could have been prevented has we known more. I can only apologize. ChemUSA did not realize ASUS bundles the Wifi card with the notebook and the specs provided to us were incorrect. Normally we instruct ChemUSA to add ABG wireless cards to all Centrino notebooks, but since ASUS bundles the card (on this notebook only) we were incorrect. Thus, $35 was refunded back to your card. What we should have done is have ChemUSA put the ABG card in the system at our expense and still refund the $35.
We can still do this if you like, just let us know. We have already refunded tha amount of the card back to you so the wifi card was free to you. *****
4) *******Do you mean the expected shipping notebook had a date of the 15th? I do not show any email being sent to you on the 15th. Perhaps this was a phone conversation... Please let me know.******
5) *******The order was definitely processed, I am not sure how we mis- communicated that to you. But, you are correct, the order had not shipped. When we called ChemUSA, they informed us the system had not yet passed the testing phased because of a CD Rom problem. The problem here is ChemUSA did not notify us of the delay, perhaps because of the time of year, I am not sure. When we discovered this, Mathew upgraded the shipping to 2-day air to make up for the day. This was done before you posted your review.
*Update*: Yet another mistake has been made on your order. I just found out ChemUSA did not ship out your order by 2-day air as instructed, but shipped it by Ground. It sounds like you spoke with Mathew and he refunded the shipping costs back to you. What a mess***********
6) *************ChemUSA switch to FedEx from UPS a short time and the template did reference UPS incorrectly. The template has been fixed. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. The tracking link did reference the FedEx website. Normally, notes are not added to shipping notices, it is just a notification**************
7) ********** We look forward to hearing the update*****
Honestly, I am embarrassed about hearing of your experience. Your order was a complete train wreck. You have been very polite and I appreciate the time you have taken to report the problems. It seems like DL/ChemUSA made more mistakes on your order alone than the rest of the orders all year. If there is anything I can do to make up for the errors, please let me know. You are a valued customer of DiscountLaptops.com (I know, I processed your previous two orders myself) and I want to make sure you know we appreciate your repeat support.
The feedback you have provided has helped tremendously.
Regards,
Matt Richards

I originally came onto the whole "reseller" scene with wary eyes, and I was very uncomfortable with it. Having lived my live by namebrand computers, looking at something named Asus made me very anxious. Fortunately, I emailed DiscountLaptops with some questions about their laptops, and their swift replies (usually within an hour) marked with an obvious knowledge and understanding about the laptops won me over.
I originally purchased an Asus Z71V, but the "sparkle" effect of the screen killed my eyes. It should be noted that this defect was on the part of Asus, and appears in all their Z71V laptops. Fortunately, I was able to contact DiscountLaptops, and they wasted no time in giving me an RMA. Since I literally decided to return it on my LAST day, their speediness was much appreciated!
Instead of taking a refund, I took store credit--and I'm still glad I did. The support you get from the team at DL is fantastic to the point where I was worried about what kind of service I would get anywhere else. Heck, even going with Dell or IBM would've felt like I had jumped off the top rung of "support" and onto the middle one. With the new laptop I've purchased, DL has literally bent over backwards--I actually feel really bad that they're doing so much on account of me, just _one_ customer.
Either way... their laptops are great, their prices are even greater, and their tech support is just impossible to describe. I'm going off to college in just a few days, and if anybody asks about laptops, "DiscountLaptops" will be on the tip of my tongue.

I have to say that DL has by far exceded my expectations of customer service. Right from the start it was easy and Matthew was a very great person to deal with, and very professional. He took the time to answer every question I had, and I did not feel rushed in any way like with many vendors who just want you to make the purchase. Matthew returned my phone call in under 5 minutes and every email is answered promptly and in depth. The thing that shocked me most was how fast my laptop was shipped, I was told approx 3 days after the purchase, but to my suprise later that night on the same day of the purchase I received the email and tracking number of my notebook. I finalized the order at approx 8 or 9Am and received the tracking details at 7PM. I would highly recomend DL to anyone who wants a hassle free and enjoyable purchase. As a matter of fact the reason that made me go with DL is how fast I received a return call, I was shopping around for a nice notebook so I placed a few calls to 4 different vendors, and Matthew at DL responded very promptly, and still no return call from any of the other 3 vendors, so that says alot about how business is done.......Thanks Matthew.

My experience with DiscountLaptops.com was very positive. They had the best price for the notebook I was looking for (Asus Z71V)(Chembook 2371V) and seemed more professional than their competitors. I had a few pre-sales questions and they were all answered very quickly and politely. When I ordered it took only two days for them to build the computer and ship it out. My only regret in the whole purchase was not choosing 3 day air shipping. I chose ground shipping to save money, and it took 10 days to arrive at my house (Upstate NY) from the day it shipped from California. Of course, this is due to UPS shipping and is not DiscountLaptops fault at all. I am very happy with my laptop and feel that I received a high quality laptop from a reputable dealer which makes me glad that I decided to spend the extra money instead of going with a Dell. I would recommend DiscountLaptops to my friends and would definitely buy from them again.

What I Bought
ChemBook 2056-X (Compal 56). The configuration I chose is as follows: 2.0 GHz Pentium M Dothan CPU; 1GB PC2700 RAM; Hitachi 60GB 7200rpm hard drive; DVD/CD-RW drive; onboard 802.11a+b+g WiFi; ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 video card with 128MB VRAM; plenty of ports; 15" SXGA+ display.
Why I Chose Discount Laptops
1. They answered all my pre-sales questions promptly, courteously, and in detail. They never pressured me and never tried to tell me what to buy. I did a lot of research before buying, and I liked the people at Discount Laptops the best. I dealt with the owner, Matt Richards, and also Mathew Tucker, and both were very friendly and helpful.
2. They have an excellent selection of high-performance, customizable laptops at reasonable prices from companies like Sager, ASUS, Compal and Twinbook.
3. Their website contains a wealth of information on their products, warranties, policies, and so on, all of which helps with purchasing decisions, and their configurator is easy to use.
4. Excellent warranty included in price.
5. Superior marks at ResellerRatings.
The ChemBook 2056-X
I've had this laptop now for a few months, and I love it. It's lightweight, has very good battery life, and runs cool and quiet. It's not based around the newest technology, i.e. Alviso/Sonoma platform, but I don't need the latest and greatest. I bought this for work projects and gaming, and it runs all my software beautifully and multitasks well. It's not my main computer (I also have a desktop), but I still use it nearly every day and certainly when traveling. The keyboard is solid and comfortable, and the display is crisp and sharp. No dead pixels. If you're looking for a multimedia laptop, you might prefer one with a 15.4" widescreen display. There are a lot of user reviews online for the Compal 56 and some complaints about the screen, but this isn't designed for multimedia or Photoshop work, in my opinion, so you have to look at it in that light
Tech Support
I've had several laptops over the years and rarely need tech support. But often you really find out what sort of company you're dealing with when something goes wrong. The XP disk that came with my laptop turned out to be defective causing a system shutdown when in the middle of an OS reinstall. I won't go into all the details, but Matt, Mathew, Shannon and the people at ChemUSA all came through for me wonderfully so I could get back up and running as quickly as possible.
Other
Over the last few months, they added a forum to their website so users can share tips, post reviews, and so on. Thumbs up!
Overall
I'm very happy with my ChemBook 2056 and with Discount Laptops. I highly recommend them. Thank you Matt, Mathew and Shannon!

I ordered my first laptop ever, a Sager 3790, and I LOVE it. Discountlaptops.com was friendly, reliable, and fast. I am satisfied with every aspect of my purchase and cannot pull myself away from my new computer. I received the laptop and was amazed at the value I got for the price I paid. Overall, I am very happy that I chose to order from there and I will definately look forward to ordering from there for the next laptop I need. This review was modified by its author, BrianBelley, on

The Sager 3790 is my first laptop and I gotta say I love it. It's everything I'm looking for. Got everthing in 8 days, 4 if you don't count new years day and the weekend. Happy that I got it so soon. Discountlaptop's representative was very helpful. They were very polite and told me everything I needed to know. I was a little worried after hearing about the dead pixel (hoped that I didn't get any), but even if i got some I could always send it back for another, that's good service. I have no dead pixel. I have been searching for a laptop for over a year but was dissatisfied with what's out there with major brand names until i found this site. I decided on this site thanks to everyone's positive review on DiscountLaptops.com. Hope they stay committed to quality. This review was modified by its author, LiquidT, on

**UPDATE**
Before I posted an extremely positive review on my purchase experience with Discountlaptops.com. Therefore I thought it would be fair that I posted my RMA/RETURN experience with Discountlaptops.
When I decided to return the laptop -- it just wasn't for me -- I called Customer Service and talked to David who was very courteous and professional. I explained why I wanted to return the laptop and he completely understood and said "no worries." There was no badgering or hassling, the experience to get my RMA number was completely stress free. I thought this would be important to those who purchased or plan to purchase using the Cash option because that's how I paid for it.
About an hour later I received a courtesy call from someone at Discountlaptops, last name is Nguyen, who again was very professional. He kindly asked why I wanted to return it and if there was anything else they can do for me (exchange, etc.). I told them I was reconsidering buying laptops altogether, and again he said he understood and thanked me for my interest in their products. Again, stress free and no hassle.
Within 24 hours I recieved my RMA number via email. It is stated that it could take up to seven days for Discountlaptops to check my laptop and refund the money. I called twice for an update on the status of the refund and both times I talked to Shannon. She was very sincere and took the time to let me know the status of my order and was gracious in patiently answering every question I had. Today, on the sixth day of the return/refund process, I received my refund via Paypal. In my opinion this was a very fast process.
Overall I found Discountlaptops customer service to be GREAT. Everyone I spoke to from the customer service department were extremely nice and helpful. Believe me, if I ever get that urge to look into laptops again I will check out Discountlaptops. They have all-around fantastic service.
**********************************
After playing with my M6Ne for about three days now, I feel I can safely offer my opinion on discountlaptops.com. Simply put, it was one of the most enjoyable and stress-free purchases I've ever had. For instance, I've never had luck with LCD's. Not putting much faith into the possibility of getting a perfect screen, I emailed discountlaptops asking he could have my LCD scanned for dead-pixels. Within half an hour I receive a reply from Matt telling me he would request a LCD scan. A familiar pattern emerged. I would email Matt with a question, and immediately I would get a thoughtful reply. One time I emailed Matt at 11:30pm and received a reply within a few minutes. The man does not sleep! :) It's some of the best customer service I've ever received.
My package came on the expected day via UPS. Everything that was supposed to get here got here (free carrying case, drivers, software, etc). The machine itself is more than I hoped for. AND NO DEAD PIXELS! THANKS MATT~!
I used the cash option and saved a nice bit of cash for later use, maybe a small wireless mouse. With the CA reverse shipping option and the cash option, you can tell discountlaptops.com really goes out of its way to save the customer some cash. I appreciated this.
For anyone considering discountlaptops.com, I highly recommend them. As long as they keep selling laptops, I'm going to buy from them. I already have some of my fellow Computer Science students checking them out. Great store! This review was modified by its author, H Nguyen, on

So Far I am very pleased with DiscountLaptops.com! I recently placed an order (8/27/04) for a sager np-4750. The laptop itself is a great machine, with awesome specs and the price i got was the cheapest around. I am still waiting for a tracking number, but was recently informed of bad weather , leading to a delay in production. Which is ok, because the service so far is top notch. I will post again once i get the actual unit, but until then, im giving discount laptops.com a 10 across the board! This review was modified by its author, Cybrnook2002, on

I have yet to even receive the computer - shipment is tied up due to weather. However, when I inquired as how long it was going to be and if I could upgrade shipping, just so I could take it on vacation, they automatically upgraded me free.
I don't recall ever having service of this quality! Not only that response to my emails are immediate, within 1/2 hour. I'm just thrilled.
Status August 29, received tracking number and got a note saying the box will ship on Wednesday. Just in time! We are out of town for 2 weeks early Sept and Discountlaptops was quite happy to hold the shipment if necessary, but it's not! So far, very satisfied.
Status Sept 3, arrived right on schedule. Packing was great! Machine is wonderful! Great Service, I will definitely return when a new laptop is needed!
Thanks Guys!
Addendum December 8.
Excellent customer service just doesn't cover this company! I ordered a Chembook CL56. Wouldn't you know I got one with a problem they have never seen before. It was sent back to ChemUSA once in October, and the monitor was immediately replaced. The only questions asked were the ones the needed to understand what was wrong.
This didn't fix the problem. With no questions, they are replacing the unit. The owner of Discountlaptops kept an eye on the whole procedure.
Happy, I'm delighted. Finally when I say I'll order from them again. Well I did. A second one. This review was modified by its author, blueginko, on

Matt Richard, the one man who runs the discountlaptops.com company is very pleasant to deal with. He acknowledge your problem and quickly resolve upon your request.
I had several problems with the first order Sager 4080, and without a haste he'd go ahead and process the fully exchange at my request written via email. (CROSS Shipping too)
so I would defintly recommand all my other co workers, friends or even any of you right now reading the review!
by way it only took 2 days for cross shipping ! This review was modified by its author, furiousleader, on

I was looking to purchase a new laptop and it had to have certain features. Such as Intel P-4 w/hyperthreading, 2.8ghz w/512 mb ddr 3200 400mz ram, 800mz frontsids bus, 17"wxga lcd cd-rw/dvd, 6-in-1 card reader & win xp pro for under $2000. I was not hooked on a brand name per-se, just a good value for my denero. I found discountlaptops.com using google. I placed my order and almost immediatly got a response back from the owner. We mailed back & forth over the next few days about payment, shipping times, etc. Never once did I feel reluctant about spending close to $2000. on something ordered from this dealer. I was able to track my laptop from the time it was built until the moment it arrived @ my house. When I opened my box, I wa very impressed by the way it was packed, the care taken to ensure everthing was right. Within 15 minutes of turning it on, i was e-mailing my wife about my new arrival. The quality of this product is equal to and far better than most "name brand" laps out there. This is my 4th laptop and 9th computer i've bought online, and highly recommend it to anyone looking for quailty for the cost. 5 stars and 2 thumbs up!!
