Microcenter (MC) is doing a horrible job with the product launch of this new Intel E8400 CPU! Here's my experience and info:

Sat. Jan. 19 - I got the initial "eNews Update" email from MC stating, "In Stock - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - Best Price Available - Get it Today at Micro Center". It said it was available in store only, at $189.99, and that it was originally $239.99. While I was happy to receive this notice, usually, MC has higher prices than found online. Also, as the CPU just came out, and MC had not yet opened for business that day, and thus had not yet sold the CPU at a higher price, the "original" price seemed like marketing BS. Perhaps I should have went straight to the store and grabbed on. But I didn't because:

A. There is no local MC in my town, only in KC, 100 miles roundtrip.
B. The weather was around 0 degrees most of that day, and as I had just recently fixed a no-start prob w/ my car, I didn't want to risk it.
C. I've had poor prior experiences with MC, where I've called to check on availability, they said it was in stock, then I've driven to the store and they had none (just as they've done to other customers).
D. As this 45nm CPU is new, I needed to read up about its overclocking potential and overall value.

Sun. Jan. 20 - After some late night research, it seemed like MC did in fact have about the lowest price of anyone for this IN STOCK CPU. Also, early reports about the E8400 CPU were favorable.

Mon. Jan. 21 - I checked prices on other older, slower CPU's, but they haven't fell in price (as you would think they should upon the faster E8400 release). So, I called MC to make sure it was in stock. My local MC said they had 3, took my name and phone # and put 1 on hold. 2 min. later, MC called back, stating they were wrong and those 3 were taken. No estimate of when more may come in stock.

Tues. Jan. 22 - 4-ish AM - Received another "eNews Update" email from MC stating, "Back in Stock - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - Best Price Available - Get it Today at Micro Center". I called MC within 30 minutes after they opened, on hold for 15 minutes, then was told (again) that, contrary to the latest email, they do not have any in stock! MC said next truck may have some Thurs. Jan. 24, and it was a priority. Online, MC was still accepting online orders for the CPU that they didn't have, (then cancelling them, some apparently with a confusing, credit or stock issue). Again, this is despite the fact that they were (and are apparently) suppossed to be in-store only!

So, I then decided to call MC corporate to express my frustration with their repeated misinformation and problems with website, at 1-800-634-3478. I spoke to 3 MC employees as I was routed from 1 dept. to another, eventually told to call MC at 1-614-850-3000, who said I needed to call their Customer Relations Dept. at 1-614-850-3036, 8:30-5PM EST. I did, and got (another) recording, and left a message for them (no employee name given for that Dept.) to call me back.

Wed. Jan. 23 - (As of this date) Micro Center Customer Relations did not return my call. I decided to call my local (Overland Park, KS) MC store again, to check on stock. Even though MC told me in their previous call that their next truck would be on Thurs., the same employee that had taken my name and # on Mon. told me today (Jan. 23 08) that they now had 47 (forty seven) Intel E8400 CPU's in stock, still at $189.99. I had them put my name on 1, to be held at the Service Desk.

However, I am seriously considering taking my business elsewhere (maybe Newegg and pay a little more, or wait and see if the price comes down). Micro Center should realize that customers don't only expect reasonable prices / the lowest price, but also reasonable (competent) product information and prompt customer service. I am also thinking about waiting for the new quad 45nm CPU, expected in Feb. or March.

PLEASE CALL MICRO CENTER'S CUSTOMER RELATIONS DEPT. at 1-614-850-3036 AND VOICE YOUR CONCERNS, if you've experienced the same poor service. Thanks everyone.

Feb. 12, 2008 UPDATE: The incomplete and late response from Microcenter (MC) below is too little, too late. I complained to both the store, and to Customer Relations (I did reach them after my original post but before MC's reply below, but only by calling them again). Checked today, and despite my thorough feedback, MC has a price problem with the E8400 CPU - show's $199.99 in their new online catalog, but still $189.99 via a keyword search for the item online. Furthermore, the CPU doesn't even show up in their online CPU "Check Pricing" link, as many of their Intel CPU's don't show! Finally, MC's post below doesn't address the legitimacy of their higher $239.99 "original price" for this CPU, when the first price they offered it at $189.99 on 1-28-08 is lower, making it APPEAR to be on sale. I'm concerned this may violate my state's Truth In Advertising laws, so, absent an explanation from MC, I may have to file a legal complaint with the KS Attorney General's office. Thank you fellow readers.

We have reviewed this statement and would like to apologize that the item in question was not available when you called. In review, the initial e-mail led to 25 E8400 CPU's being sold at our Overland Park location in the first few days. When the second e-mail was released on 1/22/08 there was a shipment scheduled to arrive that morning via overnight carrier. Unfortunately this did not occur and the delivery was delayed by one day. We apologized again for the shipment error. We would be happy to hold one of these at the sale price of $189.99.
We would like to look into the phone message you left for Customer Relations. We do take all customer calls very serious. If I could ask you to contact our operator at 614-850-3000. She will make certain the someone is able to speak with you right away. Simply identify yourself as the customer from resellerratings.com. We look forward to working with you on this issue.

I just tried to put an order through Micro Center because of some deals they were offering, and because I called up the customer service representative to verify some shipping information about an item in stock, that item was subsequently removed from stock while I was in the process of making the order.

It is deceptive of them to remove a product just because they are not willing to honor a deal they have in place.

Because of this I will refer all friends and family to try a reputable website for there computer parts instead of Micro Center.

There is no product or customer information available to provide a detailed explanation. However, our normal order process allows us to place orders (sometimes resulting in backorders) unless we are unable to obtain the product from our vendor. In your case, it may have been a timing issue where we were going through the process of disabling this product when you contacted us. Micro Center is indeed a reputable company. When it is determined that we can no longer obtain a product we have to disable the product until we are able to remove it from the site. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I ordered two sets of Lego Mindstorm NXT's on 11-28-07 and received confirmations that both would ship within a few days. One shipped and I continued to receive messages saying the other would ship shortly. I then got a message saying it was backordered until January. Then in late December I got another message saying they could no longer supply the item. I checked with many other stores and this item is in stock almost everywhere else. Apparently the price at Micro Center Online was set too low and they are just backing out of orders.

We just set up our reseller ratings merchant account today. We reviewed your comments and wanted to confirm that the price on the Lego Mindstorm was a good deal. We did sell out of the product and some orders were placed on backorder while we tried to get more product from our vendor. We sent a backorder email on 11/30; still on backorder email on 12/13 and cancellation email on 12/29/07. Unfortunately, we were not able to obtain any additional product so we had to cancel the orders in backorder status. We apologize for the inconvenience.

No invoice # is sent, just in pkg. Then they delay the charge so as to make any rebate late. I bought OS10.5 on 11/5/2007, they debited my card on 12/11/2007 so the $30 rebate was invalid. Yet I received and sent in the rebate, and it is acknowledged in the emails, on 11/26/2007. So I can send in the receipt, the UPC in time and still not qualify. Scam artist and illegal theft on their part. Beware, and no phone number to call on web.. Call a store and no one is available. Update: I saw a credit on my card.. yet no call, and I did not go into the store, just figured it was a done deal. Thanks for the credit.. and it appears they offer a credit weeks before, and if you do not read small print and buy, well that is hard luck. O/W no more rebates for me

There are several concerns listed that we would like to address. There is an invoice/transaction number listed on the invoice (receipt) that you received with your order (and sent with your rebate). Our records show that we charged your account on 11/5/07. There is no record of a 12/11/07 transaction. During the timeframe of your order, there were two rebates listed on our website (different purchase date requirements). It appears that the reason your rebate was denied was because the form that was submitted did not match the purchase date. However, our records indicate that you visited our retail store on 12/19/07 and we credited your account for the $30 rebate. We did not even require you to resubmit the appropriate rebate form. Micro Center is a reputable company and do we list contact information our website under Customer Support.

They canceled my order. The CSR said their stock is not linked to website in any way. They will even sell things that they have do not have stock for. Horribly rude customer service.

This Instore Pickup order was for the free printer rebate. A digital camera, motherboard and a printer had to be purchased at the same time. Unfortunately, the motherboard and camera you chose (a low priced/discontinued model) sold out as well as the printer. Someone listed this promotion on a deal type website (to order the same motherboard and camera) which resulted in product being sold out. At this time, we do not have real time inventory on our website but we are working towards updating our site and providing this feature. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I ordered five 20-packs of Verbatim DVD+R DL discs at an excellent price, including shipping fees. When the discs came in I discovered they were second-rate discs (made in India). I wanted to keep and use them, so I began backing up some of my prized DVDs. Two of four failed in the burn process, and the other two were quality tested with Nero and failed with numerous errors.

Micro Center issued and RMA and I returned them on October 17. They were signed for on October 19(I have a copy of the signature). Today is the 29th and I still don't have my credit issued. I had to pay shipping back even for a defective item. CS claims that they have no record of receipt, and they say their product manager is involved trying to track down the package.

They will not call back as promised and will not even email me to let me know anything. They may have good prices, but stay away from ordering online. Their B&M stores may be okay, but their online store leaves a lot to be desired.

This was my first and last purchase from them.

We just set up our reseller ratings merchant account yesterday and wanted to respond to your concern. We did have issues locating your return. We agreed that the time it took to process your return was unacceptable. We discussed this issue with our Distribution Center in October. You noted that we never called you. Our records indicate that we spoke with you on Oct. 24th, 25th and 29th. On October 30th, we left a message that the return was processed and we apologized for the delay. The Verbatim product was sent back to the manufacturer with notations regarding the quality issue. I was unaware of the return shipping issue. We will issue a $9.95 credit for the shipping cost you incurred on the original order. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope that you consider Micro Center for future purchases.

Excellent store, any issues with rebates have been resolved quickly by contacting Microcenter directly instead of the third party rebate center. I've spent over $5000 here in the last 3 years including over $1000 on Black Friday and would do it again with no issues.

On 4/14 I drove to Marietta, GA from Jacksonville, FL to purchase the Powerspec 350 with a rebate of $100 if purchased by 4/15/07. Paid total amount on site after 70 mile round trip. The rebate was returned unpaid, due to "Bought outside of the qualifying period"
Having purchases several computers from Microcenter, I can absolutley say that depite the quality of this computer I will never be doing business with them again.

I placed two separate orders online and within a couple of hours, both orders were canceled by Micro Center due to being out of stock. They charged my credit card for both items and it took five days of grief calling the store and the bank several times to get the pending charges removed.

I have using a debit card to buy merchandise online for years, as I'm sure many others have and never had problems until this incident with Micro Warehouse. When the merchandise is out of stock when ordered, why would it even get as far as contacting the bank? Most other companies don't charge my card until the merchandise is packaged and ready to ship.

We just set up our reseller ratings merchant account yesterday and wanted to respond to your concern. We were able to locate both orders that were cancelled. We did not charge the card because the order was cancelled. It appears that this was paid with a debit card. Your bank did hold the amount of both purchases as authorizations (not charges). Merchants do not have any control over how the bank processes debit transactions. According to our records, when you phoned us on Aug.27th, we contacted the bank on your behalf to release the authorizations. The bank associates kept transferring us to different departments but no one seemed to be able to help us. On Aug. 28th, we called you because the bank required a conference call with you before they would release the authorizations. The bank associate stated on the conference call with you that the authorizations would be removed at midnight. It is noted on the orders that you were fine with the outcome. We informed you that if you did not see the release of the authorizations to give us a call and we would contact the bank again. We apologize for the inconvenience but Micro Center contacted the bank as you requested and had the authorizations removed.

This was my first attempted purchase with this company. I ordered an item and it got canceled due to being oversold. Not a big deal and I can live with that but to leave the product posted on their website for a whole day accepting orders is just ridiculous. It destroys your confidence in a company that doesn't take steps to control their inventory or their website. I hope they make an effort to do better job in the future for everyone's sake.

Very upset. Microcenter has had a product I purchased and I did not get any e-mail or any way of finding out the status of my order for over 6 hours. Then out of the blue they cancelled my order due to stock shortages even though they were still taking orders online. I am very upset at this and they have lost a long time customer.

This company participates in false advertising by offering products at one price and then cancelling orders when it realizes that it might be able to sell them at a higher price. I highly advise against doing business with this disreputible company if you need your products to arrive in a timely fashion at the price you agreed to pay. I'll never do business with them again.

Zero confirmation of the order from the merchant after online transaction. This is a basic business practice; you email your customer a receipt.

After a week with no word, called Micro Center directly only to find item was on BACK ORDER. Normally I don't mind back orders, providing:

1) The merchant informs me (they didn't),
2) The item is listed as back ordered on their website (it wasn't), and
3) They can give me an ETA (they couldn't)

Considering the low dollar amount involved (inexpensive tool kits) I didn't cancel the order, but COMMUNICATION IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SATISFIED CUSTOMER AND OTHERWISE.

Micro Center has some work to do.

Maxtor 320GB PATA 2.5" Hard Drive
- IDE UltraDMA ATA/100

- Up to 100MBps Data Transfer Rate
$69.99 online only -
Web OnlyNo rebate required
Online price reflects $10 instant savings / Reg. $79.99 / 676932

The drive they sent was not a laptop drive. Just a standard 3.5" drive.

They offered to replace the 1st drive with a smaller capacity 2.5 drive, but then this morning my email indicates that yet again another 3.5 has been shipped. I would not buy from Micro Center Online, and I'm asking to be removed from their mailing list. I have absolutely no confidence in their online operations.

Now they've offered to replace the second drive with an even smaller capacity drive. Micro Center seems to be the champion of bait and switch advertising.

I won't order from them in the future. Too many false promises. Too much hassle. I presently have three drives charged to my credit card, and no 2.5" drive in hand.
