After some initial disappointment with the response of the sales team (turned out later to be technical issues), I ended up with the president of the company as my salesman. I had become interested in Velocity Micro through reviews here, and Randy re-sold me on the company and their products. He patiently worked with me to customize a PC, in the middle of the night (his time zone), and answered questions that I later found in FAQs on the VM website.
Computer has been up and running for a few days now, without any hitches (other than trying to connect an old scanner that there are no XP drivers for -- doh!). Documentation is sufficient, although I would have a couple suggestions:
1) Provide soft copy (pdf is fine) of all doc.
2) Provide list of system specs and versions, from BIOS to loaded software, ideally soft copy as well. In addition to being generally useful, it would explicitly list which of the shipped CDs were loaded, and which not (although to be fair, with minimum work, you can figure that out).
One of the things that I liked was the manual installation of latest drivers for everything (I assume -- haven't checked), rather than simply a burned image. Nice touch, they created a drivers folder and left them all there.
The fact that even their low-end machines are still good quality components made me more confident about choosing options on components that I hadn't researched as much; I figure that worst case, I would still be fine, since I'm not using this computer for anything too hard core.
Although I was able to find my rig, as configured, a little cheaper elsewhere, I am confident that the Velocity Micro box will be assembled with at least as much (and probably better) quality -- absolutely no hint of a mass-volume assembly line. So, I'm definitely willing to pay the small premium they demand. This review was modified by its author, mgr303, on

First, thanks for the terrific feedback, mgr303!
We are so glad you took the time initially to write our President, to voice your concerns about sales e-mail messages you sent that had not been responded to in a reasonable time. He discovered, with help from our webmaster and sales manager, that some e-mail messages were erroneously being forwarded to a non-functioning address inside Velocity Micro.
He wrote you back during the late evening hours to apologize for the apparent lack of attention, and asked for another chance to provide you with the custom configuration you wanted. We're glad you gave him back your home telephone number, and the chance to redeem ourselves, and we are working diligently to improve ALL of our customer relationship opportunities, and ensure that nobody is allowed to fall through the cracks.
As for your suggestions, we agree that further soft documentation would be helpful to accompany the custom system documentation binder, which becomes rather cumbersome to manage as systems get more complex. We will work to improve on this area going forward. Again, we really appreciate the opportunity to gain your trust and your business!

I purchased a Gamers Edge System from Velocity Micro after initially placing an order with Alienware and cancelling it.
Velocity Micro delivered the PC as promised, and it has been running flawlessly since I got it (and I have been running it 24/7 with a distributed computing application running in the background).
Their customer service is outstanding, I got through right away when I called to check the status of my order, and they have always responded quickly when I emailed them a question. In fact, I even emailed them about a month after I got the PC and asked about the LED fan that was supposed to be part of the Zalman CPU cooler (my order specified that it was a Red/Blue LED fan), and asked why mine appeared to be only blue. (To me this was a minor thing, but I wanted a clor that contrasted with the blue cold cathode lights I asked for). After a couple of emails exchanged, they just sent me a replacement fan for the cooler free of charge (without having to fiddle with returning the old one)! I thought this was a terrific example of great customer service, and this experience showed me that I made the right decision by cancelling my Alienware order (they have what has to be the worst customer service in the industry).
It was truly a smooth experience. Their phone techs/customer service people are very friendly, and I got the sense that they have just a few people who man the phones (and they all speak perfect english - unlike the folks at Alienware).
Bravo Velocity Micro! I wish them the best in their future operations.

I have just received my Gaming Machine this week from Velocity Micro. My dealing with the staff Randy and Chip has been a great experience. They helped me in designing a very competitive system for on-line gaming at a lower cost then I expected. I would highly recommend this company to anyone wanting a high end system at a fair price Believe me I have looked into all of the big companies i.e. Alienware, Falcon and Velocity systems run beside or exceed competitors benchmarks, oh and the money you save well it is a no brainer which to buy. You want customer service and a quality system, look no further. This review was modified by its author, czardog, on

The purchase went smoothly and the computer was shipped on the date promised. After about 3 weeks I experienced some hardware problems, and Velocity Micro immediately shipped the replacement parts. What particularly impressed me was that although I experienced these problems on the Presidents Day holiday, and Richmond was snowed in at the time, I was still able to get prompt and courteous service.

VM handled my purchase very professionally. They didn't even mind changing my order once or twice after I had already submitted it via web.

I was really pleased with the entire process of buying my computer. The sales staff helped me choose the right components and made me feel confident that I was dealing with knowledgeable people. The components used in my PC are top-grade and were clearly assembled with care. The system has been rock-solid reliable for the 5 months I've been using it. I can't imagine why anyone would buy a "one-size-fits-all" system from one of the major manufacturers when a quality company like Velocity Micro exists. It took a little while to get the order through (though it was stated by them in a very upfront manner that the process could take up to 3 weeks). They didn't run over that alotted time though, and since the system's gotten here, it's been trouble free. It's all been well put together. The first thing I did was take the old auxilliary drive out of my old computer (w/ all my data, music, etc) and dropped it in the new machine. I was happy to open the case and find that all of the wiring and assembly was very professionally and neatly done.
As far as stability and performance go, everything's been great. As I type this I've been up and running for 31 days and some change, without a single shutdown or reboot. This is considering that I play processor intensive first person games such as quake III, UT 2k3, and Mafia, all cranked up to full or nearly full detail levels. I've had no problems at all running these things. Most of the time I don't even bother closing Mozilla (multiple tabs open) or winamp before I play. Sure, the system's fairly high end (athlon xp 2100+, 512 mb of RAM), but performance is quite solid and consistent, even with those specs considered.
After my experience, and reading the experiences of other users on this board, I woudn't hesitate to recommend them to others.
As a side note, they are competitively priced for what they offer. I priced systems of the same performance level throught Dell and Alienware, and Velocity beat them both, hands down. This review was modified by its author, WintermuteMain, on

I was ready to purchase a new PC as my old one had been acting very strangely. I browsed various vendors on the WEB and looked at a number of custom builders and compared various models and the features. Velocity had the best set of options available and the prices were as good or better than any of the other custom builders. They did an excellent job of setting up the new PC, and there were just a couple of small problems with some missing items in the shipment, but their support was outstanding and very prompt. I would recommend Velocity to anyone looking for a quality machine at reasonable prices.

we needed to upgrade our 4 year old system, and my stepfather told us to try Velocity Micro. We weren't sure what would serve us best, and the salesperson listened to our needs and helped us get a system that is just what we needed and within our budget. We're very pleased and have sent a good friend to them.
