Dear silent-g,
Delivery of a first issue is entirely dependent on the publisher. A publisher will normally deliver a first issue for a monthly publication in 8-12 weeks. A quarterly or bi-monthly can take a bit longer depending on the publishing schedule.
When you order through Best Deal Magazines your order will usually reach the publisher within 1-2 weeks. The publisher must then input your order into their system and schedule your first issue for delivery. Depending on how many mailing labels the publisher has printed up in advance (1-4 issues), it can take time to receive your first issue. This is usually where the delay occurs in receiving a first issue.

I have used this company twice in the past and didn't have an issue until I ordered some new subscriptions in Nov of '06.
I waited until March to contact them about the missing magazines. It took until April 25th for someone to get back to me and they gave me a lame excuse about an employee being out that was causing the delay.
The only response I got was the following: "After a thorough search through our databases, it appears the orders did not properly download from the server."
I was told to wait another 18 weeks before complaining again. I requested a refund in June and have not heard ANYTHING back from Customer Service.
This company sucks!

As per a previous response that I just posted, this was a time when we had a customer service manager who was not doing the job as she should have been. We were under the impression that the work was being done, however, in some instances it was not. This person was discharged from our employ in July 2007 and was replaced by Lori in September 2007. Lori is a wonderful addition as our customer service manager and she will ensure that your inquiry is taken care of.

Best Deal Magazine has won me over again! I had placed an order in 2005 and it was never filled. I heard from the vice president of the company today saying they fired a person who was not doing her job and wanted to issue a refund on the old order, which they immediately did. I have reviewed both orders for Women's Health. I see where my former customer service manager issued you a coupon code to replace the magazines and offered an additional $2.50 as a thank you for your understanding and patience with your order. I see where she issued the coupon code for the wrong amount and I am at a loss to understand why. The orders clearly added up to $9.76.
As I stated previously this particular customer service manager was discharged from our employ in July 2007 for reasons such as this. I apologize that you were affected by the poor performance of this particular person.
In the case of your order we were not informed that the order had been returned until we inquired into the delivery status. Once we realized that the order had been returned we issued the coupon code for replacement. If you do not wish to use the coupon code we are always happy to issue a refund.

Maybe I'm an exception (I see 75% bad reviews here), but things worked out fine for me. I've ordered several magazines (10 total) with BDM at well below normal subscription price. Received all of them, although most took a very long time to begin reception.
Takes anywhere from 2 to 6+ months in my experience to get first issue (receive regularly after that). Which is often longer than they say it should take (8-18 weeks). More like 4 months on average.
I contacted them about a couple magazines having not arrived yet (after almost 4 months). They got back to me (5 days later) to let me know my order was recently received by the clearing house and I should wait a little while longer. The magazines did arrive a month and half later. It's possible this delay was caused by an error in their paypal system. In their faq they state that if you receive a paypal confirmation, but not a BDM one, you should contact them right away (so they can manually enter order). This is quite annoying. If this is a common error, they should make this more well known (when you make order) as I doubt many people read the FAQ.
It did seem like I started getting a little more postal junk mail. Not a huge amount though. It should be noted that the increase in junk mail is probably from the magazine publishers (selling my info) and not Best Deal Magazines.
The cost of the magazines is subsidized (from a "gift") by the Vintage Superstore. You will be sent advertisements for the "Vintage Superstore" within FREQUENT BDM e-mail promos. So you should keep that in mind when considering which e-mail address you supply (I use a seperate e-mail address for such things).
Overall I'd say I'm satisfied despite the caveats because it was so cheap. I don't remember how much I saved exactly, but it was well over 70% off the normal subscription prices (with discount coupons of course). One of the best savings was on Muscle and Fitness magazine. Saved nearly 90% of the subscription rate. I ordered a 2 year subscription for $7.61 (including shipping) vs the normal $60 subscription cost (or $166 newsstand price). I mean how insane is that?
In summary, I'd say if you want to save a lot on magazines and have a lot of patience (to wait several months), consider ordering through Best Deal Magazines. Make sure you read thoroughly through the site on the terms & conditions and the FAQ. My experience is that they will do what they say, albeit slowly. Second, let me address a couple of comments in your post.
Delivery time: Your order reaches the publisher within 1-2 weeks of your order date. The publisher must then enter the order into their system and schedule first issue for delivery. Some publishers are very slow to enter your order which creates a delay. Then if a publisher prepares their mailing labels in advance (usually 1-4 issues), you must wait for your mailing label to come up to receive your first issue. Normally a monthly publication is received in 8-12 weeks. A quarterly or bi-monthly can take a bit longer depending on the publishing schedule. Any delays encountered on receiving your first issue is related to either the publisher not entering your order promptly or mailing labels are prepared well in advance.
Postal Junk Mail: Best Deal Magazines does not sell, rent or distribute any of your personal information other than your name and address to the publisher for the purpose of fulfilling your magazine order. We have no control over what a publisher may do with your name and address. If you are receiving postal junk mail, it is not coming from Best Deal Magazines as we have not sold your information. It is probably due to the publisher selling your information to a third party or another website you may have provided your information to.
PayPal: When selecting PayPal as your form of payment, you left your order in limbo as you were redirected to the PayPal website to pay. Once you paid on the PayPal website, PayPal must redirect you back to our website for completion of your order. If they did not or the customer closed their browser thinking they were done, the order never completed. This is why we noted the problem in our FAQ to be sure that customers knew they should always receive an order confirmation from Best Deal Magazines and from PayPal.

Piss poor customer service. Good luck getting any service at all if there is any issue with them. They never respond to emails except with auto-reply's. Basically, they are hit or miss with getting the subscription. If you get it then great, if not, say goodbye to your money as they don't have any customer service.

Subscribed to 8 magazines. I have only received 2 magazines. I have contacted the customer service many times, however, no response. They will steal $ and never return your $, better yet not even answer your questions. Price is nice but service is at its worst. Be AWARE!!!

We were led to believe that inquiries were being handled yet they were not. Once this was identified this person was discharged from our employ. A replacement was hired in September 2007 who is absolutely fantatic.

Ordered two new subscriptions from Best Deal magazines 09/17/06. I started receiving issues of PC Gamer after about two months, but have not received a single issue of Guitar One yet. Email to Customer Support stated that you must wait 18 weeks before contacting them for help. After six months and several emails I have yet to receive anything but the automated response from BDM's customer support. The prices may seem great, but you may never receive the subscriptions you pay for.

Really awful experience. Never received the magazine ordered, and many, many e-mails over several months yielded no response. They have no phone number to call for customer service. Wish I read the other reviews here before ordering!

Best Deal Magazines takes pride in excellent customer service. I noticed that your post was in April 2007. During this time, we had a customer service manager working who led us to believe that all inquiries were being addressed and responded to. As time went on it became obvious that the inquiries were not being address but were being ignored. Hence very upset customers. Due to this our customer service manager was discharged from our employ. In September 2007 we hired Lori for the position and she is absolutely wonderful and takes care of every inquiry that arrives in our customer service department.
I truly believe that you may have been one who was affected by a customer service manager who thought the wool could be pulled over our eyes. I apologize that this was your experience. This is not representative of Best Deal Magazines as we have always had an excellent customer service rating prior to this particular customer service manager and have managed to rebuild this reputation now that Lori is our customer service manager.
Best Deal Magazines has been in business now for almost 20 years and we plan on being around for many more to come. If you send an inquiry in and do not receive a response it may be that your ISP is blocking our response. Some known ISP's that block our domain are AOL, Comcast, Cox, SBC Global, and Road Runner. Be sure to e-mail from an alternate e-mail address that is not associated with one of these domain names.

I ordered several magazines from this place. The magazines take a while to ship, but they will ship eventually. Expect 2+ months. But for the price, >$5 for Maximum PC and Forbes, it can't be beat.
With prices so low, you can't really go wrong unless you want the magazines very quickly. I'm going to recommend this place because the prices are just that good.

I ordered Forbes for $3. Seems stupidly low price. Waited and waited. Never got the magazine and after a bunch of emails to them, they simply refunded my money. Why waste time with these guys! They are just making money on the float between billing you and having to give the money back.

Since your order number does not match that of our order numbers and I do not show any orders for Forbes on the date you noted, I believe you may have rated our company in error. |

What good are low prices if you never get the magazine. I ordered a magazine last year and never received any copies!!!
I followed their instructions for appeal but have been ignored. Recently,they asked me to renew for another year(sic)!!

I see that you ordered Delaware Today and Dog & Kennel. Since so much time has passed I cannot verify whether you received Delaware Today or not. However, Dog & Kennel, which was published by Pet Publishing experienced some publishing problems beginning in 2006 and were unable to fulfill the orders but stated they would eventually be fulfilled. We issued coupons for a replacement magazine to anyone who ordered a Pet Publishing magazine. You would have received a coupon at the e-mail address on file with your order.

I have ordered from this site a few times over the past few years. They often have the best prices. The magazines take a long time to arrive, but I eventually got all of them. The Web site has a number of programmatic problems that makes ordering a hassle if you have a pop-up blocker.

I'm surprised at their rating thus far. I've used BestDealMagazines several times in the past, most recently on Oct. 5, 2004. I ordered a three year subscription to MaximumPC using a coupon code for 15% off found on Techbargains.com. This is one of the best deals around folks, you can't even get a three year sub through MaxPC directly.
I'm VERY pleased with this company and will continue to use them for any applicable magazine subscription needs. Doesn't get much more cheaper or reliable than this.
