The online system is totally clueless about the inventory of the local store, or the store is totally clueless about their online selling records. The online orders are not held by stores. A total waste of time and gas.

Purchased a Gateway FPD2185W 21" flat panel LCD monitor (yes the one where the DVI goes out). Tried returning it back to store, but it was "past the 15 day return policy". The lady on the phone, whom I could barely understand, after an hour, offered to pick up the monitor from my house, and issue me a refund check. This was on a Monday. The driver was "supposed" to be here on Wednesday. No show. I call back. More excuses, no driver, no check. Now its Thursday. No driver, no check. Called back AGAIN, spoke to a guy, who i could also barely understand. I think his name was "goldi" or something to that effect. Said my refund check was "not authorized". Well, of course it isnt...YOU HAVENT PICKED UP THE MONITOR YET. Now, they will call me back by noon Friday, why, i'm not quite sure. I am thinking about contacting an attorney. This place has the WORST customer service I have EVER experienced. Besides practically having to have a translator sitting next to me, I can say the people were pleasant. Unhelpful, but pleasant. Never again!

It's amazing to me that a company of OD's size treats customers the way they do. My complaint is specifically about how the play fast and loose with their rebates.  
 
About three months ago, I purchased a Viewsonic LCD monitor. OD offered three rebates, so it seemed like a good deal. After submitting them, I verified that they showed up on the OD rebate site. A couple of weeks later, SURPRISE!, one had mysteriously disappeared. I found in an online forum that it had gone away for a number of other Viewsonic buyers. It took a lot of phone calls and follow-up to get it reinstated and then another month of waiting for OD to fulfill it (and it was OD, not Viewsonic).  
 
Now, in my very next purchase, another rebate fiasco. This time a Western Digital hard drive. I submit the rebate and wait. It finally shows up on their system, only to show a status of "receipt not submitted". Well, that's just a load of bull; I keep copies of all rebate submissions and, woops, there it is! Interestingly, I find another forum where many have the same "issue". Others are told their receipts are illegible, still others got various other "reasons" that their rebates were being denied.  
 
To make matters worse, when I contacted them, they could not give me an email address or FAX number to RE-SUBMIT the receipt, it had to be snail mail. "Sorry!", was all they could say. So, here I am with two OD rebates in a row in which they seem to do everything in their power to not fulfill.  
 
And, finally, a note to those posters here who say "I don't know HOW anyone could have issues with OD; they've always been great for me!". Did you READ the posts here? Sure, if I had just a few transactions with them, they might have gotten it right a few times. But, folks, this isn't just bad customer service, this is FRAUD. This is the kind of thing that the FTC should be fining them for. You can't offer a rebate and then just have it "disappear" with no contact or explanation or anything. C'mon!  
 
I likely will not shop OD any longer. I certainly am not going to be lured in by any more of their "rebate offers". Too chancy, in my book. OD, if you're reading this, you owe your loyal customers much better than this. There are plenty of other office supply companies in town and most of them are treating their customers like they mean something.

We just bought two bookcases on 16th Aug online. An email confirmation indicated that we would receive delivery on the 21st Aug. So far so good.  
 
At 9 am on the 18th Aug, a delivery of one bookcase was made. Happy as I was with an early delivery, I was not pleased with the partial one. When I called Office Depot, they said it was on its way on a second truck. I waited all day on Fri till 5, and no delivery. MY husband called them at 5, and the agent said it was 'guaranteed' to arrive on Fri night. When it was past 6, we called again and another agent said the same, even when it was so late, which we found hard to believe. Needless to say, it did not arrive.  
 
We called again, and this time, spoke to a manager called Jackie Thompson. He said he had no idea what was going on, and that he would get someone call us Mon morning.  
 
Monday, we were called by Lavinia on the dispute resolution team, who said that she would call back as soon as she knew what was going on. Surprise, surprise, no call.  
 
We called again in the evening, and spoke to Dianne. She said the item was on a truck. When pressed for more information, she made no sense at all. By now we were justifiably enraged, and demanded to speak to a manager. After being on hold for 15 mins, we were told that all supervisors were in a meeting, and that someone would be in touch tomorrow.  
 
Office Depot have displayed the worst in customer service, and we will never ever do business with them again. There is no communication between departments, and their phone manner is downright appalling. Think twice before you shop with them.

Ordered a Plextor SATA DVD burner through Amazon. My card was charged, and I recieved multiple emails confirming my order. Suddenly, without any explanation or apology, my order was cancelled.  
 
If you name a price, stick to it, don't just cancel my order with no warning. Certianly, do not charge my credit card before canceling my order. I am VERY displeased with this company.

Ordered a monitor on June 9 it showed Special order Pending with delivery scheduled for June 16. On June 20, no monitor. CSR(overseas) said monitor was shipped and would be delivered on June 21. June 30, no monitor but status showed shipped by third party and credit card had been charged. Multiple calls to CSR's yielded a different response each time. Finally asked for order cancellation but was told by CSR (overseas) no because the monitor had been delivered. Another call to CSR(North America) and order was finally cancelled. Took two more calls to CSR(overseas) to get a cancellation number and finally a refund to credit card. The issue was finally resolved about July 24.

EDIT (082106): Went to the nearest OD in Hawaii and was told that the online information was completely wrong. In Hawaii, apparently, OD does not operate any warehouses and all merchandise is shipped out from a store's stockroom. To make matters worse, the store's actual inventory is different from their computerized inventory, which is completely different from what the online inventory shows. So, when I ordered online and the items showed in-stock, they actually didn't have anything. The assistant manager found two of the items in my order, which hadn't been entered into the system yet, and he pulled them aside and shipped them to me separately from the desk, which has yet to come in. I may have to wait weeks. So much for the CSR's fluff about 14 business day guaranteed delivery and the supposed "warehouse issues" that they were having. LIARS! Do NOT do business with OD online if you live in Hawaii! The savings are NOT worth the hassle.  
 
Purchased furniture online (a computer desk and two bookshelves). Order was slated to be delivered on the 8th of August, 2006. I waited at home for the delivery all day, but nothing came. Checked online at 2pm Hawaii time (5pm pacific), and sure enough the delivery date was changed to the following day. I called customer service and spoke to a woman (sounded Filipino) who told me that the warehouse experienced some troubles and that the order would not come until the next day. On the 9th, I experienced the SAME issue. The man I spoke to claimed that if I'd called two hours earlier, he could have called Miami, where the shipping company is headquartered. Well, that would have been nice, but I only found out 10 minutes prior to my call that the order was being delayed again. I called customer service on the 10th @ 12pm and was told that the warehouse was claiming to be experiencing delays and that the order might not come today. He said he'd file a customer service claim in order to help me find a reasonable resolution to this issue. I've wasted 3 days, sitting in my condo, waiting on Office Depot to deliver. If I were in school or, god forbid, working right now, I would be beyond pissed. As it is, I'm livid about the waste of time. Do NOT order from OfficeDepot.com if you need something shipped. Their scheduled delivery dates are completely meaningless and they will do NOTHING, beyond obfuscating, to rectify the situation. In-store pick-up only, if that.

I would neither recommend to a friend nor place another order with Office Depot. I have had excellent service from them in the past but it has become atrocious as the representatives don't seem to understand the customer's requests and don't know how to handle them. Their "next day delivery" is unreliable.

I placed an order for one Watermen pen and received 3 of them plus was charged for all three pens. I promptly returned the other 2 and am now being told a week later that I have to wait 3 to 4 weeks to get my money back. I wouldn't take a chance ordering online through them again. I couldn't afford the same screw up on a computer.

My SanDisk Sansa MP3 player was shipped in a plastic bag without any bubble wrap or any other protection. There was a bit of damage to the MP3 player package. Office Depot ships orders in 3 days while Staples ships in 1-2 days.

The worst store I have ever shopped. I ordered Imation CDR spindle on 6/20. It says going to deliver on 6/27. Never did. Called back, asking me to check again with them on 6/30. Then told because it's a special order, and they can't deliver that. Asking me if it's OK to cancel the order. So I did asked them to cancel. But the very next day, 7/1, they charged my credit card for that item. Only I found out after I check my credit card statement, and ever since then, I have been making phone calls to their customer service. Each time, I was told because the special order, so they can only submit the request, and someone else is going to call me back. But, no one ever call me back. On the phone with them for hours with different rep, asking for supervisor, never get one! Well, never buy anything from them ever again!

Advertised rebates totaling $250 on a Compaq notebook HP printer combo...They have not sent the rebate monies and have made lying excuses as to why not. No help from corporate or HP.

I ordered a SanDisk 1GB mp3 player and a box of paperclips on June 11th. My card was charged.  
 
I received the paperclips a couple of days later. They were packed in a plastic bag. The paperclip box was destroyed and the paperclips were scattered around the bag.  
 
After a week, I checked the order status of my online. It said that the item was being shipped directly from the manufacturer, so it will take a minimum of 3-5 business days.  
 
I called Office Depot on June 27th to check my order status, and they told me that the item had been discontinued and they would refund my account.  
 
I will never do business online with OD again.  
 
On the other hand, I'll probably continue shopping at Office Depot stores. They're so disorganized that you can usually get some major discounts. I've gotten a wireless router at 90% off because it was mislabeled. I've gotten a 2-pack of canned air at half-price because one of the clerks misquoted the price.  
 
Don't ever use their copy-center though. The one and only time I had them make some color-copies and spiral-bind them, they bound the wrong side and ended up ruining the originals.

6/13 ordered a laptop that offered a $200 rebate. Other stores offered this rebate but I picked OD, never dreaming there would be any problems. Delivery date was listed as 6/16. No show. (In the meantime, I was contacted by OD to make certain that I wanted the item shipped to a different address than that on the CC, which I did and was happy that they verified that.) Called OD on evening of 6/16, CSA said 3 day delivery was actually 6/19, should show up then. Nothing on 6/19. 6/19 I was told by CSA that it was held up awaiting verification that it should ship to a different address. I told them that had been verified a few days before... so someone was going to check with the trucking company and get back to me. Didn't hear a word. Next morning a CSA called to say they were going to check the warehouse and call me back. No callback. I called them later that day, at that time they informed me that they had to order this from the manufacturer and would ship it as soon as they had it. Could not tell me if that would be days or weeks or ever! I waited 2 more days and called for a status, they could not provide anything. Cancelled the order with a very non-sympathetic CSA manager who basically read a script of how he could not give me any more information.  
So, not only did my business waste time waiting for needed equipment, but we are out $200 since the rebate for the other stores expired at the same time as OD's. (I still have to purchase a computer!) I'm sure other people have good luck with OD, however I personally know of 2 other instances where they have failed to deliver items that were discounted and/or rebated. In both of those cases they gave "it's on the way" answers without any definite tracking info. Then they changed the tale to say they were out of stock. If an item was out of stock, how can it ever be on the way?? Unfortunately I did not hear of these problems until AFTER ordering this item.  
So buyer beware, if you really really need an item and it shows a discount or rebate through OD, you may want to consider another option.

Officedepot sucks, cancelled my order with a reason of null, tried to trap me buying some useless stuff, and wrote on my cancel notice "cancelled at cusomter's request" so that they have no responsibility any more. At officedepot, you will get all the sh*t, and they will get all the good. Worst store ever been to, won't go back anymore.  
 
Not to mention they sell display model as brand new, and they claimed they don't know anything about this after I showed them the fingerprint on the LCD, forgetting about their words of " I'm 100% sure this is a brand new one" in no time
