Hey can you run a surface scan and see if it has bad sectors?

if you tell me how, i can do anything. just might take a little time. i will also be trying to get this thing erased to like new condition

You will need a boot up disk (I recommend a win 98 disk). Install the drive and restart the computer and boot from the floppy disk, you won't need cd-rom support. When you get to the A:\ prompt type in "scandisk C:" without the quotes, notice the space between scandisk and C:, then hit enter. scandisk will do a series of checks and then ask you if you want to do a surface scan, just hit "enter" for yes and it will show you an image of the disk and if there is any bad sectors on it. As far as erasing the drive all you have to do after scandisk is through is hit "X" and exit to the A:\ prompt and then type Format C: and hit enter and you will format the drive.
