WTB midrange computer speakers

I'm looking for a 2.1 system (sattelites + sub), used or new for a gift.

It seems like it's hard to find anything that sounds good and isn't over 100$. You used to be able to find logitech z340's on sale for 25-35$ and they sound nice and were actually high quality, but now it seems like all you can find in that range are junky little cyberacoustics sets with no real bass and tinny sattelites.

The givee is a music nut (has a freaking huge collection) and plays it all through a crappy pair of desktop speakers that came with their HP computer. It's almost painful, I wish I had enough to give them something really nice, but maybe I can get something at least kinda nice through the magic of techimo?

aren't the z340's still under $50...newegg has em. personally, i would buy the Altecs but either is good for the price.
