Are maxtors a good brand? the only Maxtor I owned crapped out on me after only 2 months of using it.

I'm a little scared to order another used Maxtor. Your thoughts please...

Not to diminish the seller, but Maxtor has come under fire lately. Between they're lack of a warrenty longer then 1 year (on OEM) and they're faliur rate, it's not a good brand anymore.

But, @ $55 or a trade for something you arn't using, it's a deal. In fact, I have a GF MX 440 AGP that I just have sitting around if you want to trade. PM me if interested.

How much cache does the drive has? Could you post a link with product specs?

You must've gotten a lemon... All manufacturers have their lemons. I have a many Maxtor drives that are over 6~8 years and none of them have a single bad sector or problems.

Maxtor is not the only HDD manufacturer that decreased the warranty to 1 year. All of them have with IDE. Only way you could get 3 year warranty is if you buy a WD Special Edition drive. These srtill have 3 year warranty.

I do have a WD SE drive. I also had an IBM that had a 3 year on it. I know white box Maxtor drives used in system builds come with the 3 year, but from what I understand all of they're basic shelf models do not.

its a 2mb cache.

As far as Maxtor's quality, while its a weird coincidence, I have 3 maxtors in my PC now and this one as well. My 2x40GB Maxtors are liquid bearing things and are increadibly, increadibly quite, and pretty quick. They have been with me for about 1 1/2 years now I think with nary a prob. The one downside if you can call it that is when you turn your PC off because of there bearings (I'm guessing) they sound like a jet engine winding down. For about 4 seconds after the PC's power is turned off they go from silent to this whine that gets deeper then lower and lower in volume till its gone, but that only happens when the PC turns off. It actually sounds kinda neat. The 60GB doesn't do that though. My other Maxtor is a 80GB which is very quite and so far has been perfectly stable!

I have to warn you I do have good luck with drives (might have to do with my house staying around 60f from fall to spring). I still have my 40GB IBM Deskstar aka IBM Deathstar. Its still running like a champ and I think its on its 2nd or 3rd year...3rd I think.
