www.pcpartusa.com supposedly has a hardware based modem with the Intel chip for $10. But that isn't a controller based (true hardware) modem. It just has more hardware on it than other soft modems. A tipoff to controllerless/ soft modem - they have minimum CPU requirements. Controller based modems don't need any CPU at all.
. The only commonly available PCI controller based modems are one by Zoom (lucent chip) and the USR (still TI logic I think). Neither are cheap. One place I was browsing recently had an OEM version of the USR for right at $50.
. You can get a very nice external (not USB as they are generally soft modems too) for $22.10 shipped (after FatWallet promo code). I know. I'm using one right now. If you are clever, you can figure a way to mount it inside your PC's case - Pop the PCB (~3x5") out of the plastic shell for a start... See the Cendyne at www.compgeeks.com .
