WTB: dialup modem

I'm building a system and since I cant get high speed internet here I have to use dialup which means I need a 56k modem. I want to get one that has an onboard controller and is v.92. I tried to find one that didn't cost too much but I dont really know which brands are good and USR modems are too expensive (60+).

www.pcpartusa.com supposedly has a hardware based modem with the Intel chip for $10. But that isn't a controller based (true hardware) modem. It just has more hardware on it than other soft modems. A tipoff to controllerless/ soft modem - they have minimum CPU requirements. Controller based modems don't need any CPU at all.
. The only commonly available PCI controller based modems are one by Zoom (lucent chip) and the USR (still TI logic I think). Neither are cheap. One place I was browsing recently had an OEM version of the USR for right at $50.
. You can get a very nice external (not USB as they are generally soft modems too) for $22.10 shipped (after FatWallet promo code). I know. I'm using one right now. If you are clever, you can figure a way to mount it inside your PC's case - Pop the PCB (~3x5") out of the plastic shell for a start... See the Cendyne at www.compgeeks.com .

It might be internal but I dont want it unless it's got a controller. I've had many problems with ones that dont and I'm not going to put one into my new computer. I emailed him asking what one it is but he didn't reply, yet.

And will that serial external modem connect to an NF7-S or do you need a special adapter? I suppose if it works good I will just get an external one. I'm guessing the serial connection is not slow enough to affect the speed of the dialup as it's sooo slow as it is.

What place is this fatwallet promo code for and where can I find the code???
I will have to wait for my paypal debit card before I can buy at compgeeks. Maybe a better deal will come before then.

As long as your mobo has at least one free serial port (9-pin male), you're in business.
. I didn't think anyone on here didn't know about fatwallet...
www.fatwallet.com has a code for compgeeks - 10% off all regular priced items in your order.
