mjlabas,

I thought I would let you know my experience with Sony Vaio Laptops. I bought three (2 from Best Buy, 1 on Ebay.) All three have had problems.

one laptop PCG-fx140 runs great, but if I turn it off, I cant always turn it back on. I think its a bad motherboard.

the second and newest laptop appears to be overheating and crashing about 5-10 times per day. I loaded motherboard monitor, and the temperature censors seem to be wacky. I think that one has a bad motherboard as well.

The third laptop I bought on ebay. It has a bad modem, which I think is buit into the motherboard.

I am done with Sony Vaio Laptops.

Best of Luck!

Allways wondered how laptops stay cool. Theres not much room for fans like in towers. And alot of stuff would be onboard. Like video or modem so it one of those fails you would be screwed as you would have to install a
new board right.
I know none of this is related to what this thread is about. Allways wondered that.
Thanks
DAVID

mjlabas,

If you haven't found one yet, contact me. I have 5 refurbished Vaios in that price range.

I'm surprised someone has had bad experiences with Vaios...let alone multiple bad experiences. I currently own two Vaios that I purchased refurbished from Clearanceclub.com. The oldest is now two years old, and the other is about one year. Both have given me flawless operation since day one. I was skeptical since they were refurbished but am completely satisfied as I feel that I'm getting my moneys worth.

To get a Vaio with those specs for $800 is going to be kind of stuff. You'd probably have better luck at an auction or local computer show. I'd suggest Clearanceclub.com. They currently have a 1.7ghz (Celeron) PCG-GRS for $900. A little more than you're looking to spend but reasonable.

Somehow, I don't think mjlabas is looking anymore.

One post on 8/27.

No mas.

However, Frys has a nice one advertised today for $1400.
