but how are they on reading old CD's and generic ones??

Kinda partial to HP's and Plextor, they read and burn anything

Nowadays, most CD drives can read old Cds. The technology has matured pretty much. These have given no problems as far as I know. I use only generic CDs and have had no issues.

However, if you want to burn Cds, its better to burn at slower speeds if you want greater reliability and fewer errors. The Plextors/Yamahas are the best but cost 4-5 times as much.

I bought a new cyber drive 40x16x48 at newegg for $37. It had good reviews so I bought one. It works good and very quiet so you might want to take a look there. They have several models there. Mine came bundled with nero 5.5.

just go to a retail store local and get one . they always have one with a rebate . most are 20$ or less after rebate .
