lost data after invalid boot.ini file

after having some problems with winfax pro, i started to get an invalid boot.ini file error at startup and then all my settings and programs have been moved around. I have found some but mot others. I ran a virus scan and was clean. Were is my stuff??

What problems were you having w/ WinFax PRO?

It doesn't change your 'boot.ini' file when it's installed.

It sounds like you might have other deep-seeded problems.

winfax was not working right and the system was freezing up
I re wrote a boot.ini file in c:/ and that eliminated the error at starup but my stuff is still moved around.
since i ran ran a virus scan and found no problems, i have been led to believe thatmy setting and programs are still on my system but how do i go back to them

Did you re-write using 'Recovery Console', or you just used a text editor?

You might just want to do a repair or you XP install using your CD and 'Recovery Console'.

Do you have SP1 installed as well?
