I need an old CD-rw

My mom has an old 400mhz celeron computer that is dying as we speak. I keep telling her to backup her data, so now she wants a CD-RW. I've looked at on-line stores but a lot of them only sell newer models. All I need is a 8x4x32 or something similar. I don't care what kind of brand it is, as long as it works, and isn't falling apart.

Anyone selling one, or know where I can find one?

Thanks.

There are lots of options, you can check out the for sale forum here, sometimes a burner something like you want will come up for cheap.

Also, ebay is a good choice, but for this application I say go with a place like Computer Geeks (www.compgeeks.com)

Here are some cheap burners from their site:

http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp...d=CD-W516E-BLK This is a 16 speed Teac drive, it's new and only 38 dollars, it's black, but I don't think that matters.

This is your best option though, http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=PCRW2412-R It's a refurbished 24 speed Phillips burner, comes with all the software you need and everything (the Teac above does not) for only 41 bucks.

Also another option you should consider is that a good friend might even loan you one for a day, that's all you'd need!

Good luck

Check what's listed on sale at www.techbargains.com
Look on Sunday as the good deals sell out fast. Officemax had a 48x12x48cdrw for $20 after rebate last week. Might as well get a new one.

another option if you just need to copy data out is to connect a spare drive to the machine and just copy/paste away!

i agree with PresterJohn. theres a store here that has a whole crapload of old spare drives(probably 1, 2, 4, gig drives for cheap.)

i wouldnt bother buying a burner for the old machine but just get the data to another disk drive.

I have an HP CDWriter USB 8200e series external writer that is 4x2x4. I am willing to let it go for $50

I third the "put a second hard drive in the system" option. You can copy data to it faster and it can hold more than a CD-ROM.
