Ok, I'm not sure if this will make sense but i have a dream and only you, The Geek gurus of Techimo, can help.

I'm sure most of you have old heaps lying around somewhere, right? Well If your in a generious mood why not donate? Sounds odd in my head but i'm sure you guys can kick it around until it makes sense.

Not odd at all, Cat. I've donated several machines, primarily to disabled veterans organizations, a couple to the Boy Scouts.

i'm certain the veterans machines are put to use, primarily by guys who can't get out much, gives them a window on the world and a way to deal with the veterans bureacracy in a less painful, time-consuming and embarassing way.

It's a great idea. I recommend it highly.

The one's I've gotten to veterans organizations I've made sure the got into good hands by sending them to augidog ( a member here), who takes piles of parts and turns them into working machines, gets an OS and a browser on them and puts them out in the field through the veterans organization he's associated with.

Alternatively, check around locally. I'd bet there's somebody doing this kind of stuff close to where you are.

Also, seniors (like I'm getting to be ) are finding out that life is a whole lot more enjoyable and simpler with email, online prescriptions and stuff like that. Check local organizations out.

Not to slight the work that augidog's organization is doing, by any means, but it costs a fair bit to ship a machine to Florida, and besides, you can get the machines to work and doing some good in your own community.

Yes great idea . I'm about to send a box of parts to someone. Easier than testing and selling them all . And they're put to good use.

Believe it or not, I've actually tried to donate old machines, but nobody wants them. By the time I get done using them, they're rather outdated and nobody wants a slow computer, even somebody who doesn't have one. (I would think that slow is better than none, but that's just my opinion.) I guess that saying about "beggers can't be choosers" doesn't apply here.

don't be so sure...unless it's a really old 486 machine, there's somebody out there who probably could use it. it's just a matter of finding 'em.

i recently gave away an old dell p133 128mb ram locally to a single mom. she was extremely appreciative (trying to educate herself with PCs to better her job chances)
