No an ISA video card, they were non-video accelerated card, which later with pci cards they changed. Maybe you dont remember this sort of technology when video accelerators came out? Anyway, to recover bios corruptions, especially with motherboards, you had to use such a card.
With video cards, you can likely get away with a pci card, but it was safer with a non-accelerated card. Some people still have motherboards with an isa slot that would take a 4x agp card and can do that. While i'd never bother using a non-certified bios just to yield a small increase in performance I wouldn't have to worry about that, however I have an ISA and PCI card if I never need it.
