Can those ThinkNIC Network Computers be used as pure thin clients?

I guess it depends how you set them up. These are just like a regular computer without a hardrive. These machines boot linux of a cd-rom and have a 4MB flash to store small amounts of information, like favorite website list, etc. You could also add a hardrive if you wanted and put windows or a full version of linux. But you would have a hard time fitting that HD it in the small case.

I was just wondering if a network boot image could be put on the 4mb flash.

EDIT: whoops, google is my friend:

From the I-Appliance BBS:
Quote:
On the v2.0 machine, the BIOS can be accessed by hitting Tab when you see the first NIC screen and then Del. Under the 'BIOS FEATURES SETUP' section of the BIOS enable 'Boot From LAN First'. This turns enables the Intel/SystemSoft Industry standard 'PreBoot Execution Environment (PXE)' on the built in NIC device. If a BootP server is available they should hook up and the server would download any OS you want into the units 64 MB of RAM memory. No hard drive or Boot CD required.
From the K12LTSP site:
Quote:
With the old version of K12LTSP you had to edit the /etc/dhcpd.conf file to list PXE or BOOTP as the default boot type. You don't have to do this anymore! DHCPD 3.0 will answer both types of boot requests.
So I guess the real question is what version are they?

Sam

I've never tried it but I think you can. The 4mb Flash connects to the IDE port just like a hardrive. You can even set it to slave or master. So if you put some kind of boot code in there and then set it to boot from the HD then it should work.
