how to work dual lan?

Ok I accidentally posted this in motherboards and realized I should post it here instead...

I have an Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard which has two onboard LAN ports. I think I read somewhere that you can connect another computer through the the other lan you aren't using to give that computer an additional internet connection. Is this possible and how?

I'm running XP and the other computer I'm trying to hook up is on Knoppix 3.2

my first computer is connected through a router via cable modem

and I realize I could hook the 2nd computer up to the router but I'm just trying to figure out how to do this!

I'm slightly confused about your intentions.

There are few benefits (and maybe more negatives) to running a 2nd computer through the 2nd NIC in a workstation to access the Internet.

Generally, it is better to put each computer directly on the LAN segment that has router (less points of failure and slightly better Internet transfer speeds).

right click on my network places, goto properties, Select the 2 addaptors and right click and select Bridge. You should be able to hook up a 2nd cable to the 2nd nic and get internet access.

The bridge just acts like.... a bridge between the 2 nic's

Also, make sure you are using a crossover cable if you want to connect two computers directly together.

To be clear, using the two NICs in Bridging mode will not make an Internet connection any faster. This will only connect two physical segments together (but not two different subnets).

your connection will slow, but it will allow access from one pc to the other also....both need to be turned on to this though.
My hubby complained when I did this....the fans on the pc upstairs kept him awake all night cuz I'm on the pc for far too long!!!!

You idea will work. The downside is that the 2nd computer's access is always dependent on the first computer being on. If you add an software firewalls to the 1st computer will will need to make access rule exceptions to allow the 2nd one access again.

If you are doing this because both computers are in the same room and you have only one network line, an alternate solution would be adding a small hub or switch.
