Losing internet connection/router?

Lately I have been having to restart my computer to gain internet access. After restart, I have internet fine. My kids machine was doing this, I didn't believe them, and I wondered why they were always restarting their comp. Then it started happening to my main machine.

Important info;

ECS K7S5A w/ onboard nic

ECS K7VMA

Netgear RP 114 Web-Safe 4-Port Cable/DSL Router w/ firmware updated.

XP Pro on both machines.

What is causing me to restart?

Need more info? Just ask.

Is it set to pick up IP address with DHCP? Probably loses it's lease, then. Just set 'em all manually, and all should be well.

Cheers

Yes, it is set up that way. I notice no difference between the settings when it's working and when it's not. So Mick, do you think it's the router?

Initially sounds like the router failing.

Yep, could be the DHCP server part of the router is losing it's mind.

If you set the IP's manually, you may get a bit longer life out of it. If any other wierd connection issues arise, though - suspect the router, and try and replace it.

Cheers

Why would that change when I restart the machines. What changes?

It renews the IP leases each time you log on. But it must muck up each lease time, and drop them out at "random". A bit like Alzheimers for DHCP servers.

Manual IP's would fix that - it doesn't have to dish them out or rmember them. Just disable DHCP and set them all manually.

Until it develops more symptoms.

Cheers
Mick

Hi, all.

I found this post while searching for information on a similar issue to jerrygarcia's. Since his issue appears to be the same as mine, I thought I'd bump it. What follows is what I wrote on another board:

Quote:
A few weeks ago, Cox.net started offering faster download speeds to all level of subscribers. At the same time, I began experiencing an issue where I would lose my connection to the internet. If I went into my router's wizard setup utility and reran the script, the connection would come back. There were days I had to reset the settings at least 5 times. Now, there are times when I actually have to change the Mac address that my router is spoofing.

I called Cox and they said it's a router problem. I wrote to Netgear and they said to update my firmware, something which I had already done. I wrote back and asked for further help. They said call in. No offense to anyone, but I'm not calling India for tech. support.

The router is a Netgear RP114. I'm running Windows XP SP1, browse with IE 6, and use Netscape 7.1's mail client. There are two other systems on the network which experience the same issue, obviously.

Anyone have any ideas? Having to reconfigure the router for each outage is extremely annoying!
I'm starting to suspect the router. Should I switch to LinkSys or stick with Netgear?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
