Replacing a cpu on a notebook?

I was handed a laptop by a friend and told to see what was wronge with it. It would not boot blah blah blah. So I finaly open up the case and it weaked of burned cpu and I have determined that it is probly the cpu which is bad. Can you replace it?

I'm sure you can replace it. But is it worth it? Couple hundred bucks for a new cpu only to find out that it still won't boot cause "something" else is fried too?

Might be worth finding a repair shop that happens to have a cpu they can test with..
