HP Vectra VEi7 Problem, please help!

I have been given an hp vectra vei7, to delete alla the data belonging to the previous owner i've formatted the hard drive, but now, to install win98se, if i use regoular win98se diskette&cdrom, it displays, refering to cdrom drive, " device not found, loading abort" or something like that, so i think that i need to use the original hp recovery disk, but, since i don't ownm it, and seems that it has been lost during years, i have to go around the obstacle, how can i do? The cdrom drive is a non branded, i supose lg, 24x unit. I need advice, please help, thanks in advance.

do you have a win98 start-up disc. the floppy contains the information and an instruction guide on cd-rom setup.

hmm...that seems like one of the rare cases where there is no driver on the floppy for that cdrom.

Have you tried booting off of the actual cd itself?

You might try downloading another w98se boot floppy from www.bootdisk.com

OR....simply take the cdrom out of the computer you are using and try it....actually what you can do is try to boot off of the boot floppy on the machine you are on now and see if it finds the cdrom..if so, take the cdrom from this machine and use it on the other machine just long enough to install windows.
