What brand of modem is it? What are the specs? You'll need to know this before anyone can help you. If you don't know the info above then look at the card up close and write down all the names and numbers and post back.

I will open up the pc and have another look all i know at this stage is you know most modems now clip in this one has pin hole to push in the motherboard if that makes any sence.

No, that makes no sense..., to me, anyway.

Modems are cheap enough these days. You're probably better off just picking up a new on and being done with it.

If I understand you correctly, your modem is Internal (it is inside the computer rather than being a box which sits outside the computer), and has a small cable which plugs into the mother board rather than being a green card which slides into one of the slots on the motherboard. Is this correct?

Your modem should be able to be 'sensed' by WinXP and the proper Modem chosen by the sytem. Click Start - Control panel - Add New Hardware and run the wizard. It should find the modem and suggest drivers. (It may even install the right driver without your intervention.)

If this does not work, try manually installing a 56K Standard Modem (available from the list included in XP) and seeing if that makes the modem work.

That's not good.

Your old one may be an ISA slot modem and the new is PCI.

Download and save to a floppy The Belarc Adviser and install it on your computer.

When you run it look under "Communications" and report back what it says about your modem.

Bill

Edit: Whoops I see stuff happened while I was in the middle of replying.
